RADM CHRISTIAN CANOVA – FRENCH NAVY Officer of Legion of Honour (OLH), Officer of National Meritorious Order (ONM), Overseas War Cross, Combat Operations Medal, National Defence Medal, Overseas Service Medal, United States of America Meritorious Service Medal, Saudi and Kuwaiti Gulf War Medals. Rear Admiral Christian Canova was born in 1956 in Algiers, Algeria and was commissioned into the French Navy in 1976. He received his military education at the French Naval Academy in 1978, United States Naval War College in 1994 and the Royal College of Defence Studies in 2000. He speaks a fluent American English and a broken Italian. As an Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) specialist, he spent the first part of his career in Combat Information Centres (CIC) onboard destroyers and frigates involved in blue waters operations during the Cold War from 1980 to 1989. But he is also quite familiar with crisis operations at sea, from Lebanon to the Persian Gulf and from Somalia to West Africa. He commanded corvette “D’Estienne d’Orves” in 1992-93, frigate “Ventose” in 1998-99 and amphibious & command ship “Foudre” in 2001-03. His staff experience includes a tour at the US Naval Doctrine Command in Norfolk, 1995 then at the French Joint Staff in Paris, NATO-EU Desk, 1997 and as senior staff officer for the French Military Representative to NATO Military Committee in Brussels, 2003. He was assigned from 2005 to 2010 to Supreme Allied Commander Transformation Head Quarters (SACT) in Norfolk,VA as the French National Representative and, after promotion to Rear Admiral, he became SACT’s Flag Officer for Future Capabilities Development. He was appointed Inspector of the French Navy (IMN) in September 2010. RADM Christian Canova married Corinne Senelle 33 years ago. They live in Paris but their three grown up children live in Los Angeles, USA; Montreal, Canada and Brussels, Belgium. .

It is uncertain who first instituted the custom of granting medals to individuals for acts of bravery or for military services. Scipio Aemilius is said to have bestowed wreaths of roses upon his men of the eleventh Legion at Carthage in 146 B. C., and the Chinese are reported to have issued awards during the Han Dynasty in the year 10 A. D., though no de- scription thereof is given. Tancred says there used to be in the National Coin Collection of France, a gold medal of the Roman Emperor Tetricus, with loops at- tached, which made it appear as if it was an ornament to wear. Perhaps the Donum Militare, and bestowed for distinguished services. Hopefully, this cache of information from a Canadian perspective assists with understanding the enigmatic Legion of Frontiersmen. This document is not intended for commercial reproduction nor is it intended for sale; however, the reader is most welcome to use this information as a starting point for further research. Please credit the original sources of information noted. Four decades ago I began to hear stories about the Legion of Frontiersmen from First and Second World War veterans. These accounts seemed questionable so I began a long process of investigating these claims and looking for informative sources. – To my surprise much of the verbal lore was confirmed with news quotations, documents, photos or addressed in rediscovered Frontiersmen publications. Concurrent to my efforts, the members of the History and Archives Section, Legion of Frontiersmen [Countess Mountbatten’s Own] willingly discussed their respective efforts to rediscover and preserve a very unique piece of Imperial history. Spearheaded by the Legion Historian, Geoffrey A. Pocock [Outrider of Empire, University of Alberta Press] a great deal of material has been placed online - see The Frontiersmen Historian. Additionally, the University of Alberta has been most helpful as the repository of Legion of Frontiersmen related documents. Finally, the grammatical errors and technical writing irregularities have been inserted to see if you are paying attention.

WW II D-Day Sapper Veteran Cpl Stanley Clark Fields Awarded the French Legion of Honour The Canadian Military Engineers are pleased to advise that the Government of France has awarded Cpl Stanley Fields the Rank of Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour. Mr Fields is a WW II Royal Canadian Engineer veteran who landed in France on D-Day and was a participant in the Battle of the Liberation of France. Some background on this honour is found at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legion_of_Honour Stanley Fields, age 95, grew up in Ottawa and was a page on Parliament Hill as a teenager. He worked as a plumber after high school and joined the Canadian Army in September 1939, one week after war was declared. Eventually Stan found his way to 5th Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers in February 1942. On D-Day, the 5th Field Company was one of four Sapper companies involved in the assault phase at Juno Beach. Engineer tanks and specialized obstacle clearing parties landed at H-Hour followed by the infantry assault companies at H-Hour plus 5 minutes. 5th Field Company was split into sections across each of the assault beaches and Stanley’s sections landed on “Nan Red” beach. The tide was higher than expected when the lead landing craft touched down and thus some obstacles were too difficult to clear. The three craft with 5th Field Company’s sections immediate came under heavy small arms fire as the ramps came down. The Royal Marine tanks and armoured bulldozers went ahead and the sections scrambled to shore but then had to take cover behind a sea wall for the next two hours.

THE 7th ROYAL FUSILIERS IN THE CRIMEAN WAR With THE MEDAL ROLL (As far as could be confirmed) 1854 – 1856 Compiled By J P Kelleher 2013 1854: Nearly forty years had passed since the Royal Fusiliers saw active service, when Russia, seeking in her ambition to overwhelm Turkey, was arrested in her aggression by the united action of England and France. The two Powers declared war against the Czar on the 27th.March 1854, and the British force was sent to south-eastern Europe, under command of Lord Raglan- who as Lord Fitzroy Somerset had earned distinction under Wellington. The Royal Fusiliers, were amongst the first regiments ordered to be brought up to war strength. They were quartered at Manchester, and the North of England was their recruiting ground. During the early spring, the Regiment was raised to full establishment, and drilled into one of the smartest, and most solid battalions in the service. On Tuesday, the 4th.April 1854, the Royal Fusiliers: Headquarters and 8 companies; consisting of 3 Field officers, 8 Captains, 14 Lieutenants, 5 Staff, 46 Sergeants, 15 Drummers, 850 Rank and File, and 25 women – under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Walter Lacy Yea, entrained at Manchester for Southampton, where they embarked the same evening on board the transport „Orinoco‟. After touching at Gibralter and Malta, the transport disembarked her troops at Scutari, on the 22nd. Here the regiment was brigaded with the 23rd and 33rd. Foot, under Brigadier General Richard Airey. Airey‟s Brigade, with the 19th, 77th, 88th. and 2nd Rifle Brigade, formed the Light Division, commanded by Lord George Brown.

Mr Keating’s immense capacity for the necessary research along with the Chairman’s endorsement and encouragement for the project was realised through the generosity of member Nicholas and Lynne Gould. The book was received in to the Club on the occasion of a commemorative service at St James’s Church, Piccadilly in September 2014 to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Second World War members were researched and added in 2016 along with the appendices, which highlights some of the episodes and influences that involved our members in both conflicts. In October 2016, along with over 190 other organisations representing clubs, livery companies and the military, the club contributed a flagstone of our crest to the gardens of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
