Tradepoint Atlantic Welcomes BAE Systems “Titan” Dry Dock to Baltimore Ushers in New Era of Ship Maintenance and Repair at Sparrows Point BALTIMORE, MD (June 3, 2020) – Tradepoint Atlantic, a 3,300-acre multimodal global logistics center in Baltimore, Maryland, featuring an unmatched combination of access to deep-water berths, rail and highway, today announced that BAE Systems’ “Titan” dry dock will be arriving and docking at the onsite dry dock to undergo a five-month-long repair and maintenance program starting on June 4. This announcement and project ushers in a new era of ship maintenance and repair at Tradepoint Atlantic, and represents a year of work and planning to reopen this legacy industry in Baltimore. The Titan docking process is expected to take nearly 20 hours. BAE Systems' massive Titan dry dock has a 52,534-ton lifting capacity and is one of the world’s largest and most modern floating steel dry docks. It measures 950-feet long, 192-feet wide, and 82-feet tall at the highest point. The Titan is used to service ships as long as 1,000 feet. “The shipyard at Sparrows Point has a rich and important history and it is amazing to see industry returning to it after too many dormant years,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “The growth at Tradepoint Atlantic and the opportunities being provided to the local communities is nothing short of incredible and our administration looks forward to partnering with them for years to come. The dry dock is open for business and that is great news.” The dry dock at Sparrows Point began construction in 1969, and was completed in 1971. -

The Cinque Ports are a unique association of maritime towns in Kent and Sussex dating back 1000 years. It was probably during the 11th Century when Saxon kings first formalised the arrangement under which key coastal towns in Kent and Sussex were offered inducements for them to provide ships and men to meet the military and transportation needs of their royal masters. The earliest known charter to the Cinque Ports collectively was granted by King Henry III in 1260 but it is clear from other charters and the Domesday Book the ports had enjoyed common privileges in return for their service to the Crown since the 11th century and were already known collectively as the Cinque Ports. There was a more formal confederation with common institutions in place by 1150 when the Court of Shepway had been established. Having their own court was one on the privileges granted along with freedom from taxation and it was presided over by the King’s representative known as the Lord Warden. Their heyday was in the 12th and 13th centuries but waned over the next 300 years, as changing patterns of warfare at sea and natural changes to the coastline of south-east England left ship service a heavy burden for relatively small fishing communities. So the five head ports of Hastings, Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich turned to their neighbouring towns and villages which became known as limbs, for help in providing ships and men and in return shared in the privileges. Rye and Winchelsea began as limbs of Hastings and in the 14 th century were formally recognised as ‘antient towns’ and henceforth enjoyed equal status to the five original head ports. -

When and Why Tenterden Became a Member of the Confederation of Cinque Ports
Tenterden and District Newsletter Local History Society No. 31 September 2017 Founded 25th November 1955 When and Why Tenterden became a Member of the Confederation of Cinque Ports Presently there are fourteen Corporate members of the Confederation of the Cinque Ports. Why fourteen when the Old French word “cinque” means five. The first recorded occasion when the original five Head Ports of Hastings, Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich were mentioned together is in Charter of Edward the Confessor of 1050. Rye and Winchelsea were initially limbs of Hastings but when that port was seriously affected by the loss of its harbour Rye and Winchelsea now called the “Two Antient Towns” were promoted to the status of Head Port in the Reign of King John. This created seven Head Ports which in their turn also sought assistance from nearby communities. The Cinque Ports were given many powers including the right to self government, independent legal jurisdiction and equally importantly exemption from national taxation. In return for assistance many communities were granted some of the benefits of their Head Port. At times there have been over forty such members. In other cases the assistance was recognised by the grant of a charter and there are currently seven such towns namely Deal, Faversham, Folkestone, Lydd, Margate, Ramsgate and Tenterden. These together with the Head Ports appoint the Lord Warden at a Court of Shepway. For many centuries the Court of Shepway was the equivalent of a Shire Court presided over by a Sheriff. The Cinque Ports fell outside of any County for many legal purposes. -

Westerdahl Museum of Lake Vtinern/NationaE Maritime Museum, Stockholm, Sweden Abstract The definition of maritime culture will be discussed in this paper. The noun mare, and its adjective derivates marinus or maritimus in Latin indeed refer only to the sea. To the author, however, this is only formalist semantics. The only reasonable starting point for a humanistic approach would be the cultural contents of the definition. In this case the salient question would be whether the conditions of the Swedish lake Vanern do resemble the conditions of the salt water coasts and archipelagoes so much that they can be compared with them, or not. The scale of lakes in general would be important. A definite answer to the question is not sought, rather a discussion. The perspective is the Braudelian longue durge. The source material of the analysis will be multidisciplinary, place names, folklore, wrecks and other remnants, the social background of fishing by way of small-scale farmer shipping to a possible ownership and management of larger vessels, maintenance of lighthouses, sea marks etc. The similarities are as important as the peculiarities. Similarities are supposed to introduce the influences of general maritime culture. Peculiarities may show the richness of the local heritage. The mixture of these two gives the balance. Some emphasis will be put on the ritual landscape with its manysided evidence since this is one of the latest research areas of the author. 1 Introduction The aim of this paper is to explore whether the maritime aspects of the large Swedish inland lake Vanern, the third largest of Europe, would be enough to characterize them as a maritime culture in their own right.
