Your membership and commitment enabled IAAE Canada to record yet another year of growth and development on our continued journey to becoming the premier organization for the professional development of Canadian airports personnel. Our leading achievement for 2011 was the release to market of IAAE Canada’s first online training modules. These modules, seven of which are currently available through the web site, will be expanded over time to become a library of introductory training for the airport industry. We see a need for broad-based industry knowledge not only in the present but even more so in the years to come as the Boomers, with their accumulated knowledge and skills, leave the industry to be replaced by new talent who may not necessarily have a specific or detailed grounding in aviation. As part of our 2012 program, we intend to introduce additional modules on equipment operations, airside and terminal operations and general airport management. Charlottetown was an exceptional host for the 2011 Facility, Operations & Airport Managers Conference. Once again, we exceeded the previous year’s high in attendance and program variety. Attendees told us it was the excellent subject matter and quality speakers that attracted them the most, in addition to the scenic venue. We are hoping for an equal or better level of success in Victoria in 2012. In conjunction with our colleagues in AAAE and IAAE, we are also organizing an international conference in Montreal from August 19-22 on the evolution of the airport and air carrier industries. Coupled with the conference will be a session of the highly acclaimed M.I.T. Airport Systems Planning Course. All three of these events represent valuable opportunities for professional learning and industry networking and we would highly recommend that you consider attending. Because of your valued support, our membership numbers passed through the 300 mark in 2011 - an all time high - and continue to grow. We undertook a member’s satisfaction survey to determine how we can improve and received highly useful feedback from the membership. In addition, we launched the Voice of the Member program as another vehicle for keeping a pulse on the needs of the members. We have already acted on some of the results by exploring new initiatives such as member webinars and have factored others into our 2012 plans, about which you will learn more in these pages. We can all be certain that our industry will continue to face change and challenges, be it new regulations, changes in the business environment or new skill requirements. IAAE Canada is committed to helping you meet these challenges by continuing to responsibly invest members’ equity in new classroom and online training, certification and accreditation programs, conferences and other networking opportunities and innovative methods for professional development. You can preview our full complement of member services on our website iaaecanada.org, which we would encourage you to peruse on a regular basis. Our focus remains locked on delivering value to our members. As I have noted in other instances, IAAE Canada has attained its present level of success in large part because of the efforts of those members who have volunteered their time and passion to serve on the Board of Directors and the various Standing Committees. During 2011, Steve Burchi, A.A.E. and Steve Maybury, A.A.E. both retired from the Board and were succeeded by Chris Wood, A.A.E. and Mike Seabrook, A.A.E. I would like to thank Steve and Steve for their committed service to the Association and at the same time welcome Chris and Mike as our new Board members. We also welcomed back Eric Tolton, A.A.E. to the Board as the upcoming Corporate Representative. The future vitality of our Association is dependent upon members continuing to volunteer for Board and Committee positions. We would urge you to consider doing so for the benefit of IAAE Canada and for your personal development, as well. On a personal note, I will be concluding my three-year term as the Chair of IAAE Canada at the 2012 Annual General Meeting in Victoria. It has been my personal and professional honour to have had the opportunity to serve as Chair. My gratitude goes out to all of you for your support and camaraderie and to the Greater Toronto Airports Authority for encouraging and enabling my involvement. We have the envious advantage of working in a dynamic, exciting industry filled with all sorts of exceptional people. Cuyler Green, A.A.E. will be your new Chair and will be bringing fresh leadership and new ideas to the role. I know that you will give the same great support and encouragement to Cuyler as given to me. Thank you for helping to make 2011 another successful year for IAAE Canada! Bill Newman, A.A.E. , Chair, IAAE Canada 1 IAAE CANADA Year in Review Over the course of the past year, IAAE Canada continued to develop and introduce new products and services for its membership and to realize further successes in its ongoing programs and activities. New initiatives to deliver added value to our members… • Online training courses: A total of 7 online training courses were launched on a range of airport-related topics, offering a cost effective alternative for meeting our members’ training needs. • Member webinars: Work was initiated on the design of webinars exclusively for IAAE Canada members on topical airport issues delivered by subject matter experts. Plans call for the launch of the first webinar in the early part of 2012. • School of Airport Management: Action was initiated to apply to governmental authorities for the designation of IAAE Canada as a private career college which will provide added opportunities for the delivery of training and professional development programs. • Voice of the Member: To ensure that we are both anticipating and responding to member needs, a set of feedback mechanisms was developed to regularly measure member satisfaction, systematically assess reactions to training courses, conferences and other events and gauge member preferences for new products and services. • Social Media: We heightened our presence on Facebook and Linked-in as an added means of communicating with current and potential members. • Marketing Committee: A new Marketing Committee was established under the leadership of Mike Seabrook, A.A.E. to bring a sharper focus to the marketing of IAAE Canada’s portfolio of training and professional development products and propose new products and services to meet member needs. • Canada/U.S./Europe Conference: Planning work was undertaken to hold an international conference, co-sponsored by IAAE Canada, AAAE and IAAE, on the evolution of the airport and air carrier industries in Montreal in August 2012. Ongoing programs and activities to serve our members… • Membership: A total of 29 net new members joined IAAE Canada increasing overall membership to a new high of 312 by year’s end and exceeding our annual target of 25 net new members. • Training courses: 22 of the 25 scheduled training courses were completed through which a total of 325 airport personnel across the country were provided with training in various aspects of airport operations and management. • Online training: Subscriptions to IAAE Canada’s initial offering of online training courses continued to build gradually over the course of the year. • Accreditation Academy; An Accreditation Academy was held in Toronto in June from which 21 members achieved Certified Member status, surpassing our target of 12 for the year. 2011 ANNUAL REPORT 2 Board of Directors Chair Bill Newman A.A.E. Gener- ally we must face all challenges mentally before we can tackle the physical ones. I've had a stroke and I can't do all sorts of things I used to do. So what! You are not alone and many people have had the same challenges. What did they do? They got busy working on overcoming them. The worst thing you can do is “Woe is me, poor me, look at me, feel sorry for me”. Try not to bring attention to yourself. Just get busy getting the help to cure your problem. There are many places to get that help. There are rehab hos- pitals and a great source is a stroke recovery branch where you will get a lot of mental and physical sup- port. Here you will take away a tremendous amount of help mentally and physically. The best thing you can do is never give up. -Corky B.     VANCOUVER 2010 WINTER GAMES AVIATION PLANNING COMMUNIQUE # 4 JULY 2008 FEDERAL PLANNING CONTINUES July 31, 2008 – Since the last Communiqué (April 2008), federal aviation planners have focused efforts on finalizing the rules and security enhancements which will provide for entry and exit procedures into the Olympic Control Area. The “Olympic Airspace” design was initially drafted, presented to, and discussed with the 2010 Aviation Committee in March 2008. The “Olympic Airspace” design has now been formalized following the most recent presentation to the 2010 Aviation Committee in June 2008. Planners continued to apply the overarching principles of developing a safe and secure 2010 air transportation system with procedures that would minimize disruptions to daily operations. Maintaining a consistent delivery of security enhancements requires that all aircraft accessing the Olympic Control Area comply with a certain level of screening for all persons and goods during the Games. This is a consistent approach being applied equally to operators which includes float planes, helicopters, air taxis, private and business aircraft and does mean that some aspects of the aviation community will be impacted. With that in mind, here are the confirmed details to date: OLYMPIC CONTROL AREA The two previously proposed 12 Nautical Mile Olympic Control Areas have now been merged to encompass the areas around Vancouver International Airport, the Sea-To-Sky Corridor , the Resort Municipality of Whistler and Pemberton (see Diagram 1*). Specific operating rules designed to minimize impact have been discussed at the technical planning level and some modifications have been made as a result. Airspace procedures into and out of Vancouver International Airport (YVR), for example, will remain unchanged albeit pre-authorization and screening will be required before access to the Olympic Control Area is approved.

    NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2017 “A national organization dedicated to promoting the viability of Regional and Community Airports across Canada” www.rcacc.ca RCAC MEMBER AIRPORT PROFILEJJul: Sunshine Coast Regional Airport (CYHS), BC The District of Sechelt, an incorporated municipal government under the statutes of British Columbia, is the owner and current operator of the previously-known Sechelt-Gibsons Municipal Airport. On September 13, 2014, Sechelt Airport was renamed the Sunshine Coast Regional Airport. The existing facilities were first developed in 1966 by the Elphinstone Aero Club with a gravel runway, which was paved in 1975. The Airport, located 35 miles (48 km via road and ferry) from Vancouver, has a 2,400 foot/731 - meter runway, card lock fuel facilities, 15 licensed areas containing fifteen privately owned structures,Jj and is located approximately 5 miles/8 km from the seaside business center of Sechelt. A number of commercial and recreational groups are located at the airport. Lots for both commercial and recreational purposes are available for lease by contacting the District of Sechelt. Runway 11/29 is paved with dimensions of 2400’ X 75’, lighted with radio communications of 123.5 Mhz within 5 nm and 2500 feet ASL. There currently is a tiedown fee of $5/night. Aviation gasoline (100LL) is available 24 hours a day (604-989-0805). A Flying Club house including kitchen, lounging area, washrooms and telephone for local calls is available. A computer terminal with Nav Canada Weather Web Site access is offered. Also, the RAA Suncoast Chapter 580 newly renovated clubhouse is just a short walk (taxi) to the west, tie downs behind the clubhouse by donations washroom, shower, coffee etc.

As part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP), Canada graduated 131,553 men from training stations across the country. This thesis examines the experience of two British Columbia communities, Delta and Abbotsford, as hosts to BCATP stations. It concludes that both sites experienced a profound social and economic impact as a result of their role in training pilots and aircrew. Hosting a training station meant an immediate influx of jobs, infrastructure, money and excitement.

These concerns include but are not limited to: significant noise pollution; the dangers of landing and taking-off helicopters in a small rural residential community; the changes it will bring to a quiet neighbourhood and the rural character of the island; the distress, dangers and disturbance it causes wildlife including several protected species; and the precedent it will set for the Pender Islands as a whole.
