5 5 Civic leadership: a case study MPT responds to Maryland’s State of Emergency A Maryland crisis – indeed, a national epidemic – was the focus of an FY17 undertaking that illustrates the station’s civic contributions perhaps better than does any other MPT activity in the past year.

In late 2016, MPT launched an initiative dealing with the pervasive problem of opioid addiction in this state. This multi-month project culminated in what the station termed “Addiction & Recovery Week” from February 5-11, 2017. To cap off the week, on February 11 MPT aired a special, state-focused documentary Breaking Heroin’s Grip: Road to Recovery, including promotion of Maryland’s live crisis hotline, that achieved gross viewer impressions exceeding 67,000. The documentary revealed stories of three individuals with addiction behavior disorders in both urban and rural settings – and their recovery from their addictions. At the same time, MPT created and purchased commercial time for four separate 30-second spots addressing Local station WMAR-TV interviewed Ken Day, executive producer, about Breaking Heroin’s the opioid crisis; these spots accounted Grip: Road to Recovery, the one-hour special that aired on MPT and three dozen other TV for gross impressions in excess of 15 and radio stations in February 2017. million during their advertising flights in January and February.

created website that was launched to support the telecast. More than 50 unique items of media coverage (print plus radio and TV interviews) were cultivated to help ensure tune-in for the documentary. MPT’s Education Division pitched in with school-centered communications as well. The results of the MPT effort were noteworthy. In addition to the 15 million gross impressions garnered by the documentary and the outreach

To help ensure the documentary would reach the largest possible audience, MPT arranged for its production to be carried on commercial TV and radio stations throughout our broadcast area. Civic leadership was reinforced in FY17 when MPT offered still another season of two popular series: Chesapeake Collectibles and Maryland Farm & Harvest. Both annually bring new fans to MPT’s air, and the latter program in particular supports MPT’s desire to promote state tourism whenever possible. Maryland Farm & Harvest features stories that advance agritourism, farmstand visitation, and travel, all in support of State of Maryland interests. Similarly, our state is the focus of the long-running series Outdoors Maryland which marked its 29th season during FY17, celebrating Maryland outdoor treasurers and raising citizen awareness of environmental issues. The series Artworks continued a fifth season of celebrating Maryland art and artists statewide. efforts and the high visitation on the Addiction & Recovery website, MPT’s partner, the Maryland Department of Health, generated nearly 536,000 impressions via a one-day Twitter “storm.” The Maryland Crisis Hotline call centers recorded more than 200 calls on the February 11-12 weekend alone, a dramatic increase over normal call volume. Finally, hundreds of additional citizens viewed the documentary on the station’s YouTube channel and through MPT’s online video player – all giving visibility to a pervasive and intractable challenge facing the Maryland Public Television community. The summit aired during the station’s annual Chesapeake Bay Week® observance.

Chesapeake Bay Week®. MPT’s annual Chesapeake Bay Week (CBW) programming (20 productions in all this year) again proved to be a highlight of MPT’s locally produced specials. The 13th annual observance of Chesapeake Bay Week in April 2017 included eight programs local viewers saw on MPT for the first time, including the premiere of the light-hearted Eatin’ Oysters: Chesapeake Style and MPT’s third Chesapeake Bay Summit, a live, one-hour public affairs special. More than 72 percent of the country saw at least some of MPT’s CBW programming in FY17, with more than 230 PBS affiliates contributing to the tally of nearly 1,450 nationwide airings of programs that highlight one of Maryland’s greatest assets, the Chesapeake Bay. 7 Students from George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology land roles Education in an MPT education project. MPT’s long-honored role in education helps prepare preschool kids and those in K-12 settings to succeed in school and in life. MPT was founded upon the principles of lifelong learning, and education is woven deeply into the fabric of our efforts. The station is a trusted education partner in Maryland that produces high-quality educational media, curricular resources, online courses, and innovative content for classrooms, communities, and families. MPT’s education enterprise has both local and national reach.

Thinkport.org, our free preK-12 education website, serves as the access point to MPT’s educational products and services. Thinkport.org garnered 5,574,600 page views on its main site and an additional 17,611,500 for Lure of the Labyrinth (a digital game for middle school prealgebra students) for a total of more than 23 million page views during FY17.
