Eckert EQT Production Co., Pittsburgh, PA Structural development of folds in the Appalachian plateau province can be shown to be directly or indirectly linked to the re-activation of pre-existing faults in the Precambrian. The majority of these faults can be linked to a fabric emplaced during Proterozoic tectonism associated with early collisional events responsible for the formation and eventual destruction of Rodinia and Pangea. Some folds are the result of a single phase of basement influenced contraction, while others are result of multiple phases of activity spanning multiple orogenies. A continuum of thick to thin skin tectonics is evident for the plateau and was affected by both the presence of salt and geometric relationship between Acadian depositional strike and predominant Iapetan fault orientation. Additionally, continual reactivation of basement faults controlled the distribution of Silurian evaporates, determined where fault initiation planes were to occur, established planes of weakness, and eventually aided in the amplification and development of the fold belts as they exist today throughout the plateau province. The influence of a developing foreland basin during Acadian time created sufficient dip on the surface of the Silurian decollement, allowing for a gravity sliding event preceding Alleghenian deformation. The importance of the Silurian incompetent units on overlying structural development increases northward into Pennsylvania where it reaches a maximum, then wanes northeastward as the depositional strike of the Acadian clastic wedge and the predominant trend of the Iapetan faults diverge. -

Earth Common Journal Vol. 1, No. 1, September 2011 Preface Lucille Mazo* Grant MacEwan University, Canada Communicating about the Earth has always been an obvious choice for undergraduate students who care deeply about the state of their planet. Over the 17 years that I have taught at Grant MacEwan University, I have heard the passion and the need for students to express and share their ideas regarding the relationship between humans and the Earth. I have been privileged to listen to students’ voices and their unrelenting desire to know, as well as their insatiable curiosity to learn about the impact that humans have on the Earth. Recognizing the importance of providing a venue where undergraduate students have an opportunity to share their research and ideas about planet and human interaction, Earth Common Journal was created. Earth Common Journal is an online peer-reviewed, undergraduate annual publication that focuses on three critically important and globally reaching topics: conservation, sustainability, and global warming. It was created and shaped by a group of dedicated and compassionate editors, reviewers, and authors who understood the need and the importance of sharing research and creative work in these three areas. Its mandate is to provide a communication instrument for undergraduate students from Grant MacEwan University to convey their research ideas with the intent on informing others about conservation practices, sustainable processes, and issues that affect global warming. In addition, Earth Common Journal includes an international section where undergraduate students, faculty, and community leaders exchange the research and work that they are doing in their educational and community institutions. -
Citizens of Milwaukee Who Opposed an Open Housing Law Offered The

Janecky When members of the Milwaukee NAACP Youth Council and Father James Groppi walked across the Sixteenth Street viaduct in late August 1967, they were helping to write the end of one chapter and the beginning of another in the history of housing discrimination against blacks in Wisconsin’s largest city. This march by several black youths and the attention-grabbing Catholic priest into an all-white neighborhood on the city’s south side was the first of 200 consecutive days of marches and protests designed to convince the Common Council to support a law against housing discrimination. This legislative effort had gone on for several years with black Alderwoman Vel Phillips at the helm in a ship without a crew. Supporters called it “open housing” or “fair housing,” and opponents called it “forced housing.” By any name, it meant a legal restriction against discrimination in the sale or rental of residential property because of a person’s race. By spring 1968, that goal had been met. Federal and state laws were in place, and the Milwaukee Common Council also had established a legal recourse against housing discrimination in the city. The council’s decision followed constant pressure asserted by the youth council, Father Groppi, civic organizations, religious institutions and the city’s two daily newspapers. However, many present-day observers see Milwaukee and other Northern cities, and they come to the conclusion that housing segregation did not disappear because the city enacted a law. Those who marched in protest to gain a law against housing discrimination also marched to expose racism at its roots, and those roots 2 run strong today. -

The young British artists in Glas- gow in the 90’s are successfully attempting to define new trends in contemporary art in Scotland, Britain and internationally. The names and works of Douglas Gordon, Christine Borland and Julie Roberts might be well known to students and critics of contemporary British art. But few know that these three belong to the same generation of artists, educated at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 80’s and early 90’s. And they are not alone. The Glasgow art scene in the 90’s comprises a wide variety of interesting artists. This essay is based on research on Scottish and British contemporary art conducted during my six months stay in Scotland and England from February to August 1997. During these months I collected material, interviewed artists, visited exhibitions and discussed the contemporary British art scene with critics and curators in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. I benefited immeasurably from the amicable interviews and meetings with artists in Glasgow, particularly (alphabetical) Claire Barclay, Christine Borland, Martin Boyce, Roderick Buchanan, Nathan Coley, Louise Hopkins, Victoria Morton, Julie Roberts, Ross Sinclair, Beáta Vesceley, Neil Warmington, David Wilkinson and Richard Wright. -

Accessible: According to ADAAG (Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines), the term “accessible” is used to describe a site, building, facility, or portion thereof that complies with the ADA (American Disabilities Act) guidelines. According to UFAS (Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards), the term “accessible” describes a site, building, facility, or portion thereof that “complies with these standards [UFAS] and … can be approached, entered, and used by physically disabled people.” (Wheelchair Accessible, Handicap Accessible, Disabled Access) Adopt-A-Trail: A program in which individuals, groups or businesses “adopt” trails, providing volunteer work parties at periodic intervals to help maintain those trails. Aggregate: Material made up of crushed stone or gravel used as a base course for riprap, asphalt, or concrete pavement. Aggregate is also used in asphalt and concrete mixes. Alignment: The configuration of a trail in a horizontal plane. The bends, curves and tangents of the path. All Terrain Vehicle (ATV): Any motorized, off-highway vehicle 50 inches or less in width, having a dry weight of 600 pounds or less that travels on three or more low-pressure tires with a seat designed to be straddled by the operator. Low-pressure tires are 6 inches or more in width and designed for use on wheel rim diameters of 12 inches or less.
