The Brigade was formed from former Naval personnel in the area of Generalkommando des Garde-Korps (Berlin). The 2. It put an end to the Sozialistische Republik Oldenburg-Ostfriesland in February 1919, it once again saw action in Berlin in March 1919, Brunswich in April and against the Münchener Räterepublik in Munich on April-May. Hundreds of Freikorps men who had fought in the Baltic joined the unit when they returned to Germany. Hermann Ehrhardt (29 November 1881 â“ 27 September 1971) was a German Freikorps commander during the period of turmoil in Weimar Republic Germany from 1918 to 1920, he commanded the famous II.Marine Brigade, better known as the Ehrhardt Brigade or Marinebrigade Ehrhardt. Ehrhardt later contested for leadership with Hitler, but he was unsuccessful, with most of Ehrhardt's men joining the Nazi Party. Mistakenly citing a lack of breadth as one of the reason for the failure of their amateurishly executed Hohenzollern restoration and Kapp Putsch schemes, Bauer and co-conspirator Ignatius Trebitsch-Lincoln devised the highly ambitious White International plot.     Dokumentation AUS DEN AKTEN DER PROZESSE GEGEN DIE ERZBERGER-MÖRDER Vorbemerkung In den Sommern 1921 und 1922 schuf eine Kette politischer Morde und Mord­ versuche an republikanischen Politikern eine höchst gespannte, bürgerkriegsähnliche Situation in Deutschland. Am 9. Juni 1921 war der Führer der Münchener USPD, Gareis, Mördern zum Opfer gefallen; wenig später erlag Matthias Erzberger den Pistolenschüssen nationalistischer Fanatiker. Anfang Juni 1922 verübte man - aller­ dings erfolglos - ein Attentat auf Philipp Scheidemann, und am 24. Juni 1922 wurde Walther Rathenau auf der Fahrt ins Auswärtige Amt ermordet. Während die Urheber des Gareis-Mordes bis heute unbekannt geblieben sind, gelang es der badischen Polizei recht bald, Heinrich Tillessen und Heinrich Schulz als Erzberger- Mörder zu identifizieren. Es handelte sich bei ihnen um ehemalige Freikorpskämp­ fer und Angehörige der Marine-Brigade Ehrhardt, der inzwischen aufgelösten Truppe, die den Kapp-Putsch getragen hatte. Ihrer Verhaftung entzogen sie sich damals durch Flucht ins Ausland. Erst nach 1945 faßte man sie und machte ihnen den Prozeß. Im Zuge der Fahndung nach den Rathenau-Mördern fielen 1922 auch die beiden Scheidemann-Attentäter Hustert und Oehlschläger der Polizei in die Hände. Auch sie hatten früher der Marine-Brigade Ehrhardt angehört. Der beiden Mör­ der Rathenaus konnte die Polizei nur tot habhaft werden. Auch sie kamen aus der Brigade Ehrhardt, was ebenfalls von zahlreichen Helfern und Mitwissern galt, unter denen sich bezeichnenderweise ein Bruder des Erzberger-Mörders Heinrich Tillessen befand. Von Anfang an war in der Öffentlichkeit, besonders auf der Linken, der Ver­ dacht geäußert worden, hier sei eine weitverzweigte rechtsradikale „Mörder-Organi­ sation" am Werke, die mit ihren Aktionen das Signal zur reaktionären Gegenrevo­ lution geben wolle.

    Quelle siehe: www.bernhard-sauer-historiker.de BERNHARD SAUER Freikorps und Antisemitismus in der Frühzeit der Weimarer Republik Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg gab es ca. 250 000 bis 400 000 Freikorpsangehörige1 und etwa 120 Freikorps. Die Mitglieder der Freikorps waren durch den Ersten Weltkrieg und die Nachkriegswirren sozialisiert worden. Im jugendlichen Alter, nicht selten mit 16, 17 oder 18 Jahren, wurden sie in den Krieg eingezogen oder hatten sich freiwillig gemeldet. Rudolf Höß beispielsweise, der sich später dem Freikorps Roßbach anschloss, dort an einem Fememord beteiligt war und dann als Kommandant von Auschwitz traurige Bekanntheit erlangen sollte, meldete sich mit 16 Jahren freiwillig zum Krieg. Dort erlebten er und andere Angehörige dieser Generation die Hölle des Gas- und Granatkrieges. In den Schützengräben der Front, in der täglichen Erfahrung mit dem Tod und dem Gefühl des gegenseitigen Angewiesenseins entwickelte sich jene Männergemeinschaft, die dann für die Freikorps des Nachkrieges typisch war. Das Fronterlebnis war die Schlüsselerfahrung in ihrem Leben. In der Nachkriegsordnung fanden sie sich nicht mehr zurecht. Mit nichts anderem als dem Kriegshandwerk vertraut, ohne Ausbildung und Beruf und ohne die Aussicht, in die verkleinerte Reichswehr übernommen zu werden, schafften sie den Sprung in das Zivilleben nicht. So betätigten sie sich in der ihnen gewohnten Weise: als Soldaten in den Freikorps. Geführt wurden die Freikorps der arbeitslos gewordenen Soldaten von den ehema- ligen aktiven Frontoffizieren der kaiserlichen Armee. Die meisten von ihnen waren nach wie vor monarchisch orientiert,2 die Weimarer Republik lehnten sie ab. Die Niederlage im Weltkrieg und den Zusammenbruch der Monarchie erlebten sie als Schock. Schuld daran trug in ihren Augen nicht die politische und militärische Führung des Kaiserreichs, sondern ein innerer Feind, der mit Defätismus und Landesverrat systematisch die Heimat zersetzt habe.

    The 1920 Ruhr Uprising as Cultural Trauma – SPECTRESS Secondment Report by Joana Seiffert In spring 2016, funded by the SPECTRESS program, I was given the opportunity to spend a three months „secondment“ at the Yale Center for Cultural Sociology – the „birthplace“ of the Cultural Trauma concept, developed and specified by Jeffrey Alexander and Ron Eyerman. My research stay at the CCS provided me with the opportunity to broaden the theoretical framework of my dissertation on the 1920 Ruhr Uprising as a matter of contested narratives and collective memories and to enter stimulating discussions on my research project with the high-ranking and international Yale research community. In this paper, I want to briefly outline the benefits of my research stay at the CCS for my dissertation project, by providing an overview of my research interests together with a short historical introduction to the 1920 events of the Ruhr Uprising, and by connecting my research questions and findings with the concept of Cultural Trauma that has been crucial within the SPECTRESS research and exchange program. Cultural Trauma According to the definition by Jeffrey Alexander, Cultural Trauma „occurs when members of a collectivity feel they have been subjected to a horrendous event that leaves indelible marks upon their group conciousness, marking their memories forever and changing their future identity in fundamental and irrevocable ways“.1 This definition of Cultural Trauma should not be misunderstood as describing a real personal trauma in a psychological sense of the term. Instead, it can be applied as a theoretical tool to analyze historical processes of collective memory-making and as well as to emphasize the importance of collective historical master- narratives in the process of identity-shaping.

    THE HISTORY MANAGEMENT OF THE EAST-ELBIAN NOBILITY AFTER 1945 Paul Christopher Johannes Schönberger St Catharine’s College October 2017 This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Paul Christopher Johannes Schönberger The History Management of the East-Elbian Nobility After 1945 Abstract This thesis undertakes a critical analysis of the history management of the East-Elbian nobility. Its central hypothesis is that noble families throughout the second half of the twentieth century deliberately sought to steer and control the public commemoration of their caste. These efforts were a concerted assault on widely held views about the place of the nobility in recent history, and specifically, about their culpability in the disasters that brought about war, defeat and moral shame to Germany. The first phase of noble history management concerned an expressed ‘resistance against Hitler’ alignment and self-distancing from the regime. The second phase of history management strategically employed autobiographical and family chronicles to construct an image of a modest and industrious elite, deeply rooted in the ancient traditions and virtues of an apolitical East- Elbian estate society. This dissertation argues that the process of history management continued after German reunification in 1989-1990, when many former refugee families returned to their old estates in East Elbia. i For my parents ii Acknowledgements The final draft of an academic text is a lonesome endeavour; its genesis, however, is the work of many.
