BACK TO THE FUTURE OPBA2015 2015 OPBA CONFERENCE Hosted by the Georgian Bay Area Public Purchasing Cooperative 57th57th OPBAOPBA ConferenceConference SeptemberSeptember 30th30th toto OctoberOctober 2nd,2nd, 20152015 The Georgian Bay Area Public Purchasing Cooperative (GBAPPC) welcomes you to the 57th annual OPBA Conference in beautiful Alliston, Ontario! Alliston is located within the geographic area of Simcoe County less than one hour north of Toronto. Simcoe County boasts the longest fresh water beach in the world and has some of the best fishing, boating and skiing in all of Ontario. The Trent Severn Waterway traverses the area going through Lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching and the Severn River where it spills into Georgian Bay, providing a boater’s haven. Simcoe County is the site of the earliest non-First Nations exploration and settlement in Ontario and for this reason it is rich with historic attractions depicting the long history of this region. Your host committee, the GBAPPC, was established in 1993 through the efforts of ten public agencies and has grown to include twenty-nine public agencies, all located within Simcoe County. Our current membership includes municipalities, health care agencies, school boards, public utilities, conservation authorities and social service organizations. Our cooperative provides an opportunity to learn, lead and network in a supportive environment and is committed the strategic acquisition of goods and services through the professional and ethical expenditure of public funds. Your 2015 committee has created a professional development conference that combines our purchasing past with our procurement future for a Back to the Future inspired theme. This conference is packed with creative fun, team building, educational, and networking opportunities. We are providing an impressive line-up of speakers, seminars and educational courses that will inspire reflection on past processes and provide groundwork for emerging practices. You don’t want to miss the first ever Mock-Trial! Legal counsel will demonstrate court room activities during a procurement related lawsuit – sit back, enjoy and watch how it unfolds. Be sure to register! See you there! Your 2015 Conference Host Committee Georgian Bay Public Purchasing Cooperative 57th OPBA Conference September 30th to October 2nd, 2015 Is this your first OPBA Conference? Attending a professional development conference for the first time can be very intimidating, particularly if you are not attending with friends, at some point in time we’ve all been there! Your 2015 conference committee knows how difficult it can be when you’re not familiar with the program or activities and we truly want you to enjoy this conference. In the months of planning for this event we’ve continuously referred to the growing list of members new to our organization. Our “Back to the Future” theme reflects our intent to provide a program that provides value to those who’ve been in public procurement for many years and also for those who are in the early stages of their career. This is your opportunity to explore new ideas, reaffirm what you already know, network, and discover the wealth of knowledge available to you as a member of the OPBA. So come out and join us, you’re about to meet some really great friends!! Tips for first time attendees: Arrive at the conference early and get comfortable with the facility before your days become too hectic. Locate the Registration & Information Desk, these volunteers are invaluable and know everything about the conference. Always keep your map and program on hand so you know where things are happening. Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask questions and be noticed. When you attend a session, don’t sit with friends. Sit down and meet someone new on either side of you—you never know where this will lead. Attend the First Time Attendees Meet & Greet and get to know the OPBA Governing Board. The board is interested in you and your ideas for making OPBA a fundamental association for our profession. Use lunch and dinner periods to network. Focus on the conference—try to leave work behind. Read the Twitter feed, and other social media for conference updates and reviews. Make sure you take time to relax and enjoy the activities. 57th OPBA Conference September 30th to October 2nd, 2015 As public agencies our membership understands the need to do more with less. With that in mind, your host committee and OPBA Governing Board have introduced a community giveback initiative at this year’s conference that provides opportunities for our membership to say thanks to our host communities. In considering the many deserving charities in the Simcoe County area, your host committee focused on identifying a community service that we all agreed needed us the most and so we chose Gilda’s Club Simcoe Muskoka. The club is named for Gilda Radner, a popular comedian who shot to fame as a cast member of Saturday Night Live and died of ovarian cancer in 1989. Her husband, actor Gene Wilder, along with her cancer psychotherapist Joanna Bull, founded Gilda's Club in 1995. Today there are 21 clubs in the U.S. and Canada, with another eight in development. Gilda's Club is a free program of social and emotional support for anyone who is feeling the impact of cancer. It is a place to find inspiration in a community atmosphere with others who are facing cancer. Though Gilda’s Club is an essential complement to medical care it does not receive funding from any level of government. It is the generosity of businesses, individuals, organizations, and service groups that help keep the red door open and provide a program of cancer support. 57th OPBA Conference September 30th to October 2nd, 2015 Tuesday September 29, 2015 Registration & Information Desk: 7:00 a.m.—10:00 a.m. 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM NIGP Seminar— Sourcing in the Public Sector (Day 1) 12:30 PM - 6:00 PM 7th Annual OPBA Caveat Emptor Cup Challenge Wednesday September 30, 2015 Registration & Information Desk: 7:30 a.m. — 5:00 p.m. 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM NIGP Seminar - Sourcing in the Public Sector (Day 2) 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM NIGP Seminar - CPPB Prep Course (Day 1) 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM OPBA Principles Seminar - Advanced Competitive Bidding 11:45 AM - 12:00 PM Opening Ceremonies 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Lunch Denotes Continuing Education (Accredited) courses towards initial or recertification UPPCC Credentials Denotes Continuing Education (Non-Accredited) activities towards initial or recertification UPPCC Credentials 57th OPBA Conference September 30th to October 2nd, 2015 Wednesday September 30, 2015 continued 1:00 PM - 2:15 PM Communication, Motivation and Influence Keynote Speaker: Mike Mandel Self-described as “a reasonably normal guy with a really weird job”, Mike Mandel is a uniquely qualified expert in the art and science of influential communication.
