SLOW PITCH STRIKE ZONE A. WATCH YOUR SLOW PITCH DVD’s. B. READ THE SECTION ON PLATE MECHANICS IN YOUR UMPIRE MANUAL (PAGES 235-237). NOTES: 1. DON’T STAND TOO FAR BACK. STAND UP STRAIGHT UNTIL THE BALL REACHES ITS PEAK, THEN BEND AT THE KNEES AND SET YOUR EYES ON LEVEL WITH THE BATTER’S SHOULDERS. 2. IF THE BALL PASSES THE “BOX” OF THE PLATE (THE 17” X 8.5” PORTION), WITHOUT HITTING THE PLATE, IT IS A STRIKE. DO NOT EXTENED IMAGINARY LINES WITH THE 17” PLATE ALL THE WAY AROUND THE WORLD (OR PRETEND THERE WAS A MAT THERE). IF IT CROSSES THAT PLATE, IT’S A STRIKE NO MATTER WHERE IT HITS THE GROUND. IT CAN HIT THE GROUND INCHES OUTSIDE OR INSIDE AND STILL BE A STRIKE IF IT CROSSED THE PLATE. THERE’S REALLY NO DIFFERENCE WITH FAST PITCH OTHER THAN A SLOW PITCH, PITCH, HITTING HOME PLATE. 2. A. DO NOT CALLS BALLS AND STIKES WITH AN IMAGINARY MAT THERE. FIRSTLY ON THE AFOREMENTIONED INSIDE/OUTSIDE, BE SURE TO CALL THOSE CORNER PITCHES STIKES. B. CONSEQUENTLY ON THE DEPTH, TOO, DO NOT HAVE AN IMAGINARY “MAT” ON THE GROUND. THINK ABOUT IT. IF YOU PUT THAT IMAGINARY “MAT” ON THE GROUND, A PITCH WITH AN ARC SIX TO EIGHT FEET HIGH WILL PASS THE BATTER’S WAIST AT THE PLATE, BUT LAND ON THE GROUND NEARLY THREE TO FOUR FEET BACK (If not caught). FACE IT, WITH A MAT THERE, IMAGINARY OR OTHERWISE, YOU’RE OFTEN CALLING BALLS THAT COME DOWN ON A BATTER’S HEAD, STRIKES, AND YOU’RE CALLING BALLS ON OBVIOUS STRIKES THAT CROSS THE BATTER’S BODY. 3. THE STRIKE ZONE IS ALWAYS AT THE PLATE, NO MATTER WHERE THE BATTER STANDS. IF THE BATTER STANDS EVEN WITH THE PLATE, THE STRIKE ZONE IS AT THE PLATE. IF SHE’S FOUR FEET FORWARD, THE STRIKE ZONE IS AT THE PLATE. IF SHE’S THREE FEET BACK, THE STRIKE ZONE IS AT THE PLATE. DON’T EXTEND THE STRIKE ZONE BACK, JUST BECAUSE THE BATTER IS STANDING TOWARD THE BACK OF THE BATTER’S BOX. Slow Pitch Softball Strike BACK SHOULDER BACK SHOULDER Some part of a legally pitched ball must pass through KNEES this zone to be called a strike. STRIKE Remember that the position of a batter in the batter’s box makes no difference. A pitched ball that touches home The plate and batter’s natural stance at plate and is not struck at is always a ball. the plate are the controlling factors. .
