MUSIC FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MASSES: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, THE RECORDING INDUSTRY, AND PUNK ROCK IN THE COLD WAR by MINDY CLEGG Under the Direction of ALEX SAYF CUMMINGS, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the connections between US foreign policy initiatives, the global expansion of the American recording industry, and the rise of punk in the 1970s and 1980s. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies. -

This number makes the United States the home to the largest number of Filipinos abroad, with California having the highest concentration of Filipino immigrants with 44%. The San Francisco Bay Area, where I was born and raised and where I have lived my whole twenty- eight years, as of this writing, is itself the second largest metropolitan area of Filipino immigrants with a number of 163,000.1 The number of those with Filipino lineage and ethnic mixture is far greater and is still growing, with 1,529,086 a part of California’s 38,332,521 total population from 2000-2015.2 Despite the gravity of these numbers the definition of Filipino American identity remains a vague concept in itself.
