I wish to thank the University and particularly the Conseil scien- tique as well as the Pôle universitaire européen du Languedoc- Roussillon for making the conference possible, along with the Équipe d'accueil for giving nancial support for the publishing of the proceedings. The conference was organised around the general concept of tension, a theme that the research team (Équipe d'accueil EA 741 “Étude des pays anglophones”) has decided to keep as its main axis of study until 2006. A few academics among the specialists of V. S. Naipaul's work delivered papers on dierent aspects and periods of the writer's œuvre, and the papers were selected so as to reect both the evolution between 1957 and 2002, and the i i i i Publication de Montpe l lier 3 Une question? Naipaul not only writes ction and non-ction, he covers a wide spectrum of the literary practice, writing short stories and novels, essays and travel writing. But while listening to the speakers and reading their papers, it is eas- ier to understand how generic boundaries are not what matters here. The sense of form and creation is simply at work in every text, going well beyond the outside shape. It is the same furrow that is being ploughed with dierent tools. Sir Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul has been either praised to the skies or held up to public obloquy; he is considered as the greatest writer in the English language, or as a writer whose prose is scarred by the scrofula (to use Derek Walcott's terms) of what is sometimes considered his dubious ideological and politi- cal attitudes—there is no golden mean when speaking of Sir Vidia and steering a middle course seems to be a tricky endeavour. His being knighted in 1990 for services rendered to literature and his obtaining the Nobel Prize in 2001 only made matters worse if possible . The winner of the Nobel Prize may often be at the centre of heated debate, but few writers have been as controver- sial as V. S. Naipaul. If the tensions that surround the man and his œuvre are numerous, they are only echoed by the multiple strands and shapes that his writing has been taking over the past fty years—multifarious and yet paradoxically more and more centred. V. S. Naipaul's biography is now well-known—he was born in a very poor rural, Hindi-speaking, area in Trinidad on 17 August 1932; his Brahmin grand-father had come from India as an indentured labourer, forced by a near-destitute situation in Uttar Pradesh. Té léphonez au 04 67 14 24 06 ou au 04 67 14 24 03. i naipaul Départ imprimerie 2004-5-5 8 h 54 page 9 i i i Introduction 9 land in 1950 on a British scholarship, he had already had the experience of exile through the displacement of his family and thousands of other Indians who had come to the plantations of Trinidad and British Guiana as cheap labour in replacement of the recently freed slaves, on what should have been short-term contracts between 1840 and 1917. He spent four years at Uni- versity College, Oxford, lifted out of his family background by literary ambitions, both his father's—Seepersad wrote articles for the Trinidad Guardian, but also short stories about village life— and his own. He soon became a freelance writer for the BBC and edited until 1956 the inuential “Caribbean Voices” which launched postcolonial writing and particularly Caribbean liter- ature on to the literary scene of the time. Bruce King says of him that he is “a former colonial who has become a homeless cosmopolitan”.1 Indeed, as early as the mid-1950s, England had already become one of his homes; the Caribbean would oer him his rst writing material and he was to turn into one of the modern world's most ecient postcolonial circumnavigator and chronicler of clashing worlds. V. S. Naipaul's need to make sense of the world and achieve order through writing, was rst to nd its expression through the mode of comedy. His rst four books are often lumped together by critics, as the rst steps of the writer searching for his material and focus. The Mystic Masseur, a very funny comedy on the rise of a West Indian politician, was the rst book published, in 1957, and it is also the one which nds another lease of life through the medium of the cinema: Bénédicte Ledent (University of Liège, Belgium) in her paper “The Same, Yet Dierent: Caryl Phillip- 1. Naipaul At first glance, the subjects under scrutiny may appear to have little in common with each other. A great deal has been written separately about the works of both Alfred Hitchcock and V. S. Naipaul, but the objective of this article is to show how numerous parallels can be drawn between many of the recurrent ideas and issues that occur within their respective works. Whilst Naipaul refers to the cinema in many of his novels and short stories, his most sustained usage of the filmic medium is to be found in the 1971 work In a Free State. In this particular book, the films to which Naipaul makes repeated, explicit reference are primarily those of the film director Alfred Hitchcock. Furthermore, a detailed textual analysis shows that similarities exist between the thematic preoccupations that have informed the output of both men throughout much of their lengthy careers. As this article will demonstrate, the decision to contrast the works of these two men has, therefore, been far from arbitrary. Naipaul’s attraction to the world of cinema can be traced back to his childhood in Trinidad, an island where Hollywood films remained the predominant viewing fare throughout most of his formative years.1 The writer’s own comments in the “Trinidad” section of The Middle Passage bear this out: “Nearly all the films shown, apart from those in the first-run cinemas, are American and old. Peter Iver KAUFMAN Moreana Vol.47, 179-180 165-193 DIS-MANTELING MORE Peter Iver Kaufman University of Richmond, Virginia Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall, winner of the prestigious 2009 Booker-Man award for fiction, re-presents the 1520s and early 1530s from Thomas Cromwell’s perspective. Mantel mistakenly underscores Cromwell’s confessional neutrality and imagines his kindness as well as Thomas More’s alleged cruelty. The book recycles old and threadbare accusations that More himself answered. “Dis-Manteling” collects evidence for the accuracy of More’s answers and supplies alternative explanations for events and for More’s attitudes that Mantel packs into her accusations. Wolf Hall is admirably readable, although prejudicial. Perhaps it is fair for fiction to distort so ascertainably, yet I should think that historians will want to have a dissent on the record.

Böylelikle okur anlatılan dönemde 77 gerçekten yaşamış gibi hissetme imtiyazına kavuşmuştur. Romanın ironik ve satirik üslubu ve mizahı trajik olanla ustaca birleştirmesi özde öznel olan bir türü nesnelliğe yaklaştırmıştır. Roman İngiliz tarihinin en görkemli ama aynı zamanda en tartışmalı devirlerinden biri olan Tudor döneminin gizemini çözme noktasında başarılı bir girişim olarak dikkat çekmektedir. Sceptical of the attempts in postmodernist historical fiction to question and/or problematize the historical reality, Mantel wants to make the history she narrates in her novel seem as real as possible.     ABSTRACT “The Waters Return”: Myth and Mystery in Graham Swift’s Waterland Laura Schrock, M.A. Director: Dr. Richard R. Russell, Ph.D. The following chapter will engage Waterland in isolation from Swift’s other novels and collection of short stories, not because these texts do not mutually illuminate one another, but because Waterland deserves a treatment of the kind of depth that warrants an extended, concentrated study. That chapter seeks specifically to counter several of the blatant misreadings of the narrator’s posture and intent within the novel, and to adequately evaluate that posture and intent as they emerge within the full context of the wealth of literary devices Swift employs, including irony, mythical imagery, and scriptural allusion. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. James asserts in his introduction that in this novel Swift does use clichés “in such a way that they resonate, and we are made to reconsider their meaning,” and that “when the method works, Swift is able to create a literary effect through colloquial language” (214), yet his article shows that he remains inclined to agree more with the negative reviews of the novel, those that disapprove of Swift’s use of clichés and simple, colloquial language. His opinion rests on a restricted definition of “poetic.” The general definition of this word, according to the OED, is “[o]f, belonging to, or characteris- tics of poets or poetry,” but other definitions seem in agreement with Andrew James’s opinion when they equate “poetic language” with a language befitting “poetry, as in being elevated, sublime etc.”1 In response, I will first argue with James about what he deems to be the protagonist’s “naivety” as regards clichés, and about the status of the narrative voice.
