NATURAL FARMING-first culture is agriculture Agriculture is affected by climate change and also contributes to it. As a sector, agriculture must therefore adapt to changes and offer options for mitigation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and store carbon. Agricultural land use contributes to 12% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This figure is rising. As demand for food increases, farmers are clearing new land resulting in deforestation, tilling of pasture and soil degradation. This activity opens carbon sinks and so releases greenhouse gases. Agriculture must also adapt to changes in climate in order to provide food security. Rising temperatures and decreasing water availability are reducing yields particularly in developing countries where agriculture is vital for the food security of these populations. Extreme weather events such as droughts and floods are making cropping and animal production even more prone to failure. The objective of our project was to explore the mitigation and adaptation potential of natural farming. It examines natural farming’s performance on greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration. With respect to adaptation, the study discusses how organic farming systems utilize traditional skills and knowledge, manages with weather extremes, and enhances productivity and resilience. Natural farming is one thing we do in our special camps as well as in college from the beginning of the academic year June 2016-17. “First culture is agriculture” we started our project first culture is agriculture with natural farming in 2 hectares of land of our college. Seeds were distributed in college for students and teachers. Grow bags were also distributed among the teachers. For the healthy growth of plants, soil should provide a favorable condition. For this soil testing survey was conducted in the campus. A) Vegetable Cultivation (Horticulture) Goal: The vegetable cultivation undertaken by the NSS unit of our college intends to impress upon the students and the local community. The importance of agriculture and self-sufficiency attained thereby. Collective work and the fruits of such labour will be given due credit by the students only if they indulge in such activities. The main goal behind this endeavor is to instill the spirit of hard work in the students. Vegetable cultivation has assumed great importance in the context of the 'food security' which is the talk of the day. The college is blessed with vast areas of land which can be fruitfully utilized for the good of the society. The availability of water and labour has also made it conducive for such an enterprise. Practice: More than half acres of land on the campus has been brought under cultivation yielding variety of vegetables highly in demand in the market. High quality seeds and expertise have been made available from the department of agriculture. The labour was offered by a team of 100 NSS volunteers, rightly regarded as 'Green Army' on the campus. After a few months of hard-work there was a rich harvest. A harvest festival was arranged to celebrate the harvest. An outlet was opened to market the products. The first season of harvest was inaugurated by Dr.Shamsudheen, Assistant Professor EMEA College. Desilting of Ponds and Canal (Rain water harvesting, Bamboo Lake cleaning) Water is a fundamental human need. Each person on Earth requires at least 20 to 50 liters of clean, safe water a day for drinking, cooking, and simply keeping themselves clean. Although Kerala is classified as a rain-rich State, there are several pockets of acute water scarcity. Faced with acute water scarcity and the unreliable service of the State water authority. As part of the project named Rain Water Harvesting, -NSS renewed a water source in college campus. a pond in front of campus which was left unused for two decades. The Pond was drained out and the bottom was cleaned by the volunteers. Blood Donor's Day (14.06.16) Every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure the quality, safety and availability of blood and blood products for patients in need. The theme of this year's World Blood Donor Day is “Blood connects us all". It focuses on thanking blood donors and highlights the dimension of "sharing" and "connection" between blood donors and patients. The campaign aims to highlight stories of people whose lives have been saved through blood donation, to motivate regular blood donors to continue giving blood, and motivate people in good health who have never given blood to begin doing so, particularly young people. Our NSS unit organised a Blood Donation awareness class, and poster exhibition in association with Kerala state Aids control society. To create wider public awareness of the need for regular donation because of the short shelf-life of blood components and to encourage existing and potential donors to donate blood at regular intervals. Celebration of Reading Week- 19-6-16 It is a custom to dwell upon the impoverished reading habits of the youngsters .A few comments, some extra-ordinary tips, pieces of advice, the session concludes, ignorant of the fact that the discussion has not even entered the thoughts of the crowd. Man who has been endowed with free-will, rationale and prudence, described as the most distinguishing features of the human race, fails to grasp the ineffectiveness of his actions done to promote reading. EMEA College, which has in its psyche this indubitably erroneous attitude stood apart from the programmes organised in connection with theReading Week observation in other colleges with its staunch emphasis on the quality and relevance of the activities conducted. Throughout the week, NSS and Book Club, hosted competitions intended at excavating the reading backgrounds of the students and to instill in them the desire to take a leap into the sea of knowledge via reading. Book Review and Reading Competitions, Literary and General Quiz, were some among the major activities conducted in this regard. Pusthaka Kood The NSS units organized a book donation campaign for setting up a library for a school which doesn’t possess a library of its own. The programme was conducted under the name Pusthaka kood ' in July 2016. The books collected from staff and students of the college were donated to the school library of G.M.LP school, kumminiparambu. He insists the students to be a part of this great campaign and it is our duty to protest the drug abuse inside and outside the campus. The participants took part in an oath taking ceremony against drug abuse and Prof. Jahafar Odakkal read out the pledge. He delivered the vote of thanks and the meeting was dispersed at 3.30 pm at 1.30 pm at college auditorium, a poster designing competition was also in connection with the Anti-Drug campaign. World Population Day (11.07.15) Human resource is our strength as well as weakness. Increased rate of population growth is pausing a great threat to national development. To make awareness about these factors, NSS organised an orientation lecture for the volunteers. On 11 July, 2015 at Seminar Hall,Prof. Hussain .v, Assistant Professor in Economics, delivered the orientation lecture. Prof. P. Firoz.kt , NSS Programme Officer welcomed the audience.
