3?00( The Biology and External Morphology of Bees With a Synopsis of the Genera of Northwestern America Agricultural Experiment Station v" Oregon State University V Corvallis Northwestern America as interpreted for laxonomic synopses. AUTHORS: W. P. Stephen is a professor of entomology at Oregon State University, Corval- lis; and G. E. Bohart and P. F. Torchio are United States Department of Agriculture entomolo- gists stationed at Utah State University, Logan. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: The research on which this bulletin is based was supported in part by National Science Foundation Grants Nos. 3835 and 3657. Since this publication is largely a review and synthesis of published information, the authors are indebted primarily to a host of sci- entists who have recorded their observations of bees. In most cases, they are credited with specific observations and interpretations. However, information deemed to be common knowledge is pre- sented without reference as to source. For a number of items of unpublished information, the generosity of several co-workers is ac- knowledged. They include Jerome G. Rozen, Jr., Charles Osgood, Glenn Hackwell, Elbert Jay- cox, Siavosh Tirgari, and Gordon Hobbs. The authors are also grateful to Dr. Leland Chandler and Dr. Jerome G. Rozen, Jr., for reviewing the manuscript and for many helpful suggestions. Most of the drawings were prepared by Mrs. Thelwyn Koontz. PHYLOGENETIC SYSTEMATICS AND THE EVOLUTION OF NESTING BEHAVIOR, HOST-PLANT PREFERENCE, AND CLEPTOPARASITISM IN THE BEE FAMILY MEGACHILIDAE (HYMENOPTERA, APOIDEA) A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Jessica Randi Litman January 2012 ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! © 2012 Jessica Randi Litman ! PHYLOGENETIC SYSTEMATICS AND THE EVOLUTION OF NESTING BEHAVIOR, HOST-PLANT PREFERENCE, AND CLEPTOPARASITISM IN THE BEE FAMILY MEGACHILIDAE (HYMENOPTERA, APOIDEA) Jessica Randi Litman, Ph.D. Cornell University 2012 Members of the bee family Megachilidae exhibit fascinating behavior related to nesting, floral preference, and cleptoparasitic strategy. In order to explore the evolution of these behaviors, I assembled a large, multi-locus molecular data set for the bee family Megachilidae and used maximum likelihood-, Bayesian-, and maximum parsimony-based analytical methods to trace the evolutionary history of the family. I present the first molecular-based phylogenetic hypotheses of relationships within Megachilidae and use biogeographic analyses, ancestral state reconstructions, and divergence dating and diversification rate analyses to date the antiquity of Megachilidae and to explore patterns of diversification, nesting behavior and floral preferences in the family. I find that two ancient lineages of megachilid bees exhibit behavior and biology which reflect those of the earliest bees: they are solitary, restricted to deserts, build unlined

Journal of Melittology Bee Biology, Ecology, Evolution, & Systematics The latest buzz in bee biology No. 52, pp. 1–18 18 September 2015 A review of the genera and subgenera of Oxaeinae (Hymenoptera: Andrenidae) Michael S. Engel1,2 Abstract. The supraspecific groups of the bee subfamily Oxaeinae are briefly reviewed and a re- vised classification proposed. The following new groups are established:Mesoxaea (Heteroxaea) Engel, new subgenus; Oxaea (Rhodoxaea) Engel, new subgenus; and Oxaea (Percnoxaea) Engel, new subgenus. A key to the genera and subgenera of Oxaeinae is provided. INTRODUCTION The subfamily Oxaeinae is perhaps one of the more distinctive groups of bees in Andrenidae, comprising 22 robust species distributed from the United States south to northern Argentina (Michener, 2007). The considerable differences between oxaeines and other andrenids have seemed at times so dramatic that some previous authors accorded them familial rank (e.g., Popov, 1941, 1945; Rozen, 1964, 1965, 1993; Hurd & Linsley, 1976), but their placement as nested within Andrenidae and even close to Panurginae is well established (e.g., Michener, 1944; Graf, 1966, 1972; Alexander & Mi- chener, 1995; Engel, 2001; Ascher, 2003), although the precise positions of Euherbstia Friese and Orphana Vachal in relation to Oxaeinae (e.g., Rozen, 1993) and the mono- phyly of Andreninae or recognition of Euherbstiinae remains to be resolved. There is a general homogeneity to oxaeine species, yet where differences are present they are significant (e.g., structure of the genitalia, maxillary palpi, mandibles, pubescence). Hurd & Linsley (1976) classified the various species known at that time into four gen- era — Oxaea Klug, Protoxaea Cockerell & Porter, Notoxaea Hurd & Linsley, and Mesox- 1 Division of Entomology, Natural History Museum, and Department of Ecology & Evolution- ary Biology, 1501 Crestline Drive – Suite 140, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045- 4415, USA ([email protected]).

E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] *Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Three species of Ammobatoides are reviewed. One new species, Ammobatoides radoszkowskii sp. nov. (Russia and North China) is described and illustrated. A male lectotype is designated for Paidia melectoides Radoszkowski, 1872. One new subjective synonym is established: Ammobatoides scriptus (Gerstaecker, 1869) =Paidia melectoides Radoszkowski, 1872, syn. nov. A key to species for both sexes is given. Key words: taxonomy, lectotypification, bees, new species, Palaearctic Introduction The tribe Ammobatoidini Michener, 1944 includes four genera: Aethammobates Baker, 1994 (one species, Egypt), Holcopasites Ashmead, 1899 (16 species, Canada, USA, Mexico), Schmiedeknechtia Friese, 1896 (five species, Algeria, Tunisia, Spain east to Turkey and Uzbekistan), and Ammobatoides Radoszkowski, 1867 (eight species including one new species, see below) (Michener 2007). The genus Ammobatoides contains the largest pasitiform bees (body form of Pasites Jurine): the body length is 10–14 mm. Unlike other Ammobatoidini, there are no median bands of pale pubescence on the metasomal terga, but only apical bands, frequently reduced and evident only laterally.

Bee Biology & Systematics Laboratory, Utah State University, Logan, Utah 84322-5310, United States ABSTRACT. A new subgenus and species of Oxaea KLUG (Andrenidae: Oxaeinae) is described and figured from western Ecuador. Oxaea ( Alloxaea ) brevipalpis subg. n. et sp. n., is noteworthy for the retention of maxillary palpi (3-segmented), absence of metallic integumental coloration, and contrasting notal pubescence. A preliminary key to the species of Oxaea , exclusive of the flavescens group, is provided as an aid to identification as well as a stimulus for future research on the genus. Mesoxaea and Notoxaea are reinstated as genera distinct from Protoxaea. KEY WORDS : Andrenidae, Anthophila, Apoidea, Ecuador, Oxaeinae, taxonomy. INTRODUCTION The bee subfamily Oxaeinae (Andrenidae) includes 21 structurally similar species of large (13–26 mm), robust, hairy bees which are restricted to warmer regions of the New World (Appendix) (Figs 1–9). Species diversity is highest in subtropical Mexico (11 species) and Brazil (nine described and at least two undescribed species: SILVEIRA et al.

l/ba1ercan Jiuscum PUBLISHED BY THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY CENTRAL PARK WEST AT 79TH STREET, NEW YORK, N. Y. I0024 NUMBER 2 297 AUGUST I8, I967 Review of the Biology of Panurgine Bees, with Observations on North American Forms (Hymenoptera, Andrenidae) BY JEROME G. ROZEN, JR.1 The Panurginae are a rather large subfamily of minute- to moderate- sized bees found in all biogeographic areas of the world except the Oriental and Australian regions. With the notable exception of Perdita, a genus that contains perhaps 700 forms, the species in the genera tend to be few or moderate in number. From all evidence on hand, be it adult anatomy, structures of the larvae and pupae, or biology, these genera almost certainly represent a monophyletic assemblage, even though there is considerable diversity among them. The subfamily has been divided from time to time into two tribes, the Melitturgini, containing only Melitturga, and the Panurgini. It is doubtful that this division ex- presses accurately either the phenetic or the phylogenetic relationships of the genera, and a review of the higher classification of the subfamily is needed. The present paper, believed to be the first attempt to treat the biology of this subfamily as a whole, has two purposes: (1) to record original observations on the biology of North American Panurginae; and (2) to synthesize and compare all available information on the biology of the group for the world. As a result of the latter, it is possible to present 1 Curator, Department of Entomology, the American Museum of Natural History.
