Nomadland and the Age Old Spiritual Question This year’s Academy Award Best Picture winning film “Nomadland” will be the topic of Rev. Jeff Rock's Lesson for Life, as part of our Reel Human Rights sermon series. The story centres around Fern (Francis McDormand), a “nomad” who lives in her van traveling the Mid-Western United States finding temporary work as she goes. She and a band of characters she meets along the way do stints at an Amazon shipping plant at Christmas, a National Park camp ground in the summer, and the northern beet harvest in the fall. The story follows a year in Fern’s life, but is living the nomadic life all it’s cracked up to be? Film critics have called it a commentary on the American dream and a critique of unfettered capitalism, but the film goes much deeper than that and asks THE age old spiritual question, “What is the meaning of life?” Unfortunately, “Nomadland” is only viewable on Disney+, and a reminder that you do not need to see the films in order to get the spiritual and human rights themes expressed in the sermon series. MAY 16 | 11 AM | MCC Toronto's YouTube Channel CLICK HERE TO JOIN US FOR THIS SERVICE Monday May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, a worldwide celebration of sexual and gender diversity. In his message to the United Nations the UN Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, Victor Madrigal-Borloz will lift up the fact that “the right to freedom of religion or belief, and the right to live free from violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity are both built of a promise of human freedom [and] LGBT persons deserve that promise fulfilled”. The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia was created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics. MCC Toronto is a unique faith community and Human Rights Centre that stands at the intersection of sexual orientation, gender identity, and faith. We stand against the abusive practice of sexual orientation and gender identity conversion therapy perpetrated by many global faith communities and commit to fighting religious based homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia in all its forms. Sunday Service Musical Guest Peter Henderson is our Offertory Performer this Sunday! Peter grew up in rural Ontario where, without a lot else to do as a kid, he spent many hours sitting in front of his parents' old Zenith console singing along to the likes of the Carpenters, Elvis, Engelbert Humperdinck, Tammy Wynette and Ronnie Milsap. After university, Peter studied classical voice at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto for several years. He sings from time to time at weddings and other gatherings of family and friends, and at church. Peter joined the choir in 2012. His proudest musical accomplishment to date is having written two songs with Diane Leah and Stephanie Martin. Stephanie sang “Middle Ground” at MCC in 2018, and Peter has performed “Me, Jesus and Jack” at MCC on several occasions. Peter credits his love of music to his mother, who sang around the house in a beautiful, unacknowledged soprano voice as she went about her task of looking after EIGHT children. At 86, she still has perfect pitch.
