Phone Usage / Plans Please make sure that your phone is unlocked or usable abroad. In addition, every student must have S lack and W hatsApp downloaded on their phone p rior to departing the U.S.

Before leaving the US, call your carrier to check if your phone is unlocked for use with different SIM cards. If it is unlocked, you can simply purchase a SIM card and put it into your existing US phone. If it is not unlocked, you have two options: 1) Purchase an international option through your US carrier 2) Purchase a cheap phone upon arrival for calls and texts and rely on WiFi to use data on your US phone - just make sure to keep it in airplane mode! Consult your city managers for recommendations on where to get phones/Sim cards. Bring your passport and be prepared to provide the address of your apartment.

Banks, Doctors, and Medication Tell your bank, credit and debit card company, and doctors that you are traveling abroad. In addition, please make sure you have enough of each medication you take for the duration of your time abroad. It is smart to carry a small amount of cash with you at all times, both U.S. dollars and Hong Kong dollars. As of June 2018, 1 USD is approximately 7.85 HKD. We recommend bringing $500-$1000 USD (depending on your spending habits) with you; you can exchange it as you need.
