  • Frank Zappa's Legacy: Just Another Hoover? L’Héritage De Frank Zappa : Juste Un Autre « Hoover »? Ben Watson
Document généré le 26 sept. 2021 16:13 Circuit Musiques contemporaines Frank Zappa's Legacy: Just Another Hoover?

Nothing. And everything: It is far more important to know what person the disease has than what disease the person has.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

  • De Frank Zappa a Man and a Machine: a Reflection on “Jazz from Hell” (1986), by Frank Zappa

  • Music, Mind and the Serious Zappa the Passions of a Virtual Listener
Music, Mind and the Serious Zappa The Passions of a Virtual Listener Ulrik Volgsten Stockholm University • Studies in Musicology 9 1999/2009 Akademisk avhandling för filosofie doktorsexamen Musikvetenskapliga institutionen Stockholms universitet www.music.su.se © Ulrik Volgsten ISBN 91-7265-020-6 Preamble ’This is a hard one to play’, Frank Zappa once remarked about one of his pieces. The piece in question, the Be-bop Tango, is a rhythmically complex miniature to which he brought people from the audience up on stage to (try to) dance. Of course they failed, which Zappa was soon to point out in the same wry manner that he publicly blamed his musicians when they did not play ’all the right notes’. However, Zappa’s music was hard to pull off for another reason as well. More often than not he would juxtapose musical material and stylistic patterns that according to normal standards doesn’t blend very well. Zappa’s music was (and still is) something of a stylistic chaos. Perhaps one can say something similar about this thesis. On the one hand, the particular themes that are dealt with are rather complex, and on the other, the way they are brought together is unconventional. In other words, this is a “multidisciplinary” work. Now, in contrast to Zappa, I am not a specialist in all the fields that I deal with, which means that a professional philosopher, psychologist or ethnomusicologist is quite likely to find some “wrong notes” here and there. For instance, it may in the end turn out that the argument in part one about the role of language for music fails because I have failed to pay attention to some crucial aspects of the theories, which I call upon as support.

  • Eddy Loves Frank Press Quotes
WHAT THE PRESS HAS SAID ABOUT ED PALERMO BIG BAND EDDY LOVES FRANK CUNEIFORM 2009 “ ...this disc is marvelous--and precisely what you'd want to play for someone who enjoyed Zappa's Grand Wazoo and Waka Jawaka albums but was put off by the "funny stuff" that followed thereafter. Bandleader Palermo...has created something unique here, and something that accords Zappa all the respect he has long deserved. Seek it out!” -Dave DiMartino, Yahoo! Music, May 19, 2013, music.yahoo.com “Bandleader Ed Palermo’s third release of Frank Zappa compositions is a persuasive and deeply personalized revitalization of the artist’s songbook, as he continues to spin a thoroughly hip vibe… With his sixteen-piece band, executing difficult charts, Palermo’s horns arrangements are teeming with polytonal layers, crisp accents and gobs of verve… Palermo offers multiple mood-evoking thematic forays, including nicely placed dabs of humor, and warmly designed choruses… Saxophonist Phil Chester, trumpeter Ronnie Buttacavoli and others, engage in ballsy soloing spots…to complement some straight-ahead swing breakouts…the band is a precision machine, keeping in line with Zappa’s intricately engineered movements and seemingly impossible time signatures.” - Glenn Astarita, EJazznews, August 13, 2009, www.ejazznews.com “For those of us who love all things Frank Zappa and the mighty sounds of big bands, this is the album! It’s all here – a 16 piece jazz band playing Zappa tunes with masterful arrangements that showcase Zappa’s compositional brilliance in a jazz format. The tight, precise playing is fantastic, and it’s obvious the band is having a great time..
