  • Honda: an American Success Story: Revolutionizing the Art of Management
Honda: An American Success Story: Revolutionizing the Art of Management. 1988, New York, Prentice Hall, English. Introduction In the early 1980s US industry was in trouble, but Honda was opening its American motorcycle and automobile plants. While Honda's products were accepted by consumers, American workers were blamed for poor US products. Honda then chose raw rural labour. Yet Honda's American products have the same quality as those from Japan. Honda's success, now seen as an exemplar, shows US workers are capable. While critics in the US attacked Japan's "unfair" practices, the Honda case reveals that it is management that is central. The Honda philosophy has created a positive work atmosphere. So Honda's US success is an American success story. There's nothing wrong with American workers: it is management that must change. This is not a theoretical book but a guidebook for US managers. Honda is a small, maverick organization which became the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer only 12 years after it was founded (1948-1960). Honda has been the underdog, antiestablishment, has always met resistance and overcome it. Sceptics doubted Honda could succeed in the US, but as a latecomer to the Japanese car industry Honda has always had to be different. Honda is the largest Japanese company founded after the War, now producing all over the world. This is the story of a hybrid company, part Japanese, part US. And it is Honda's approach to people, more than technology, that should be credited and which gives Honda its advantage. 7.2.

SPORT gives aggressive power delivery, with low Wheelie Control and HSTC intervention. Cruise control is standard and our unique, six-speed Dual Clutch Transmission an option.

CBR1100XX Super Blackbird Introduction "Strategic missile", "The H-bomb", "The happening", the press is unanimous: the Honda CBR1100XX is a revolution. It is above all a roadster with extended sport- ing abilities. It must be said that it is clearly inspired on the famous CBR900RR. While it is easy to handle like any Honda, hyper stable, flexible, comfortable and very sporting at the right time, the XX is quite simply balanced and versatile. The engineers’ talents have enabled a machine to be created which is both elegant and satisfying, with exceptional driveability enhanced yet further by numerous engineering improvements implemented on the 1999 model, starting with elec- tronic fuel injection which makes the engine even more flexible and economical than previously. The ultra-high-performance its displacement; a Programmed (H.I.S.S.) that helps prevent rideaway CBR1100XX Super Blackbird Electronic Fuel Injection system theft by disabling the ignition system combines Honda’s most innovative (PGM-FI) that delivers precisely unless started with its original keys; technologies in a sleek, fully featured metered fuel for smooth, instan- and a catalyser-equipped low- speed frame that imparts an unmis- taneous response in all riding emissions version (specific markets takable look of aerodynamic conditions; a direct air induction only) that reduces exhaust pollutants velocity while delivering blistering system for top performance at high to unheard-of levels while performance. • Engine Designs and Their Implications for Oxidant Control Strategies
134 EMISSION·CONTROL DEVICES FOR CONVENTIONAL INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE DESIGNS AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR OXIDANT CONTROL STRATEGIES by Robert F. Sawyer Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering University of California Berkeley, California Most of my comments today will be based upon the National Academy of Sciences study which has just recently been completed. There are at least two other people here who have been closely associated with that study, Professor Newhall, University of Wisconsin, recently of Chevron Research, who will be the second speaker, and Dr. Benson of Stanford Research Insti tute, who was one of the committee members on that study. There has been some confusion about the National Academy of Sciences study, since there have been several recently in the automotive emissions area. The one which appeared in September, 1974, by the Costs/Benefit Panel received a great deal of publicity, some of it somewhat negative. I would encourage you to read all four volumes of that report. It does contain a lot of good information. It did deal with a very fuzzy subject, that of benefits vs. costs of air pollution control and, therefore, was not as precise as some would like. The report which has recently been 1 J 1,1 completed (the volumes were released last week) is called the Report by the Committee on Motor Vehicle Emissions. Because the interest is high, I'll take a moment to tell you how to get a copy. Request the Report by the Committee on Motor Vehicle Emissions by writing to the National Academy of Sciences, specifically the Commission on Sociotechnical Systems, National Research Council, 2101 Constitution Avenue, Washington, DC 20418.
