Introduction In the early 1980s US industry was in trouble, but Honda was opening its American motorcycle and automobile plants. While Honda's products were accepted by consumers, American workers were blamed for poor US products. Honda then chose raw rural labour. Yet Honda's American products have the same quality as those from Japan. Honda's success, now seen as an exemplar, shows US workers are capable. While critics in the US attacked Japan's "unfair" practices, the Honda case reveals that it is management that is central. The Honda philosophy has created a positive work atmosphere. So Honda's US success is an American success story. There's nothing wrong with American workers: it is management that must change. This is not a theoretical book but a guidebook for US managers. Honda is a small, maverick organization which became the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer only 12 years after it was founded (1948-1960). Honda has been the underdog, antiestablishment, has always met resistance and overcome it. Sceptics doubted Honda could succeed in the US, but as a latecomer to the Japanese car industry Honda has always had to be different. State of California AIR RESOURCES BOARD EXECUTIVE ORDER D-670 Relating to Exemptions under Section 271 56 of the Vehicle Code AEM lnduction Systems AEM lntake Systems Pursuant to the authority vested in the Air Resources Board by Section 271 56 of the Vehicle Code; and Pursuant to the authority vested in the undersigned by Sections 3951 5 and 39516 of the Health and Safety Code and Executive Order G-02-003; . IT IS ORDERED AND RESOLVED: That installation of the AEM lntake Systems, manufactured by AEM lnduction Systems of 1455 Citrus Street, Riverside, California 92507, has been found not to reduce the effectiveness of the applicable vehicle pollution control systems, and therefore, the AEM lntake Systems are exempt from the prohibitions in Section 27156 of the Vehicle Code for installation on the vehicles listed in Attachment A. The AEM lntake Systems include an open-element air filter (some applications), aluminum inlet tube(s), and assorted mounting brackets and hoses, including the positive crankcase ventilation breather hose (some applications). This Executive Order is based on Cold-Start Federal Test Procedure tests, Supplemental Federal Test Procedure US06 tests, and On-Board Diagnostic II System tests conducted with the AEM lntake Systems. If evidence provides the Air Resources Board with reasons to suspect that the AEM lntake Systems will affect the durability of the emission control system, AEM lnduction Systems shall be required to submit durability data to show that the durability of the vehicle emission control system is not, in fact, affected andlor that the add-on or modified parts demonstrate adequate durability. -

Sawyer Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering University of California Berkeley, California Most of my comments today will be based upon the National Academy of Sciences study which has just recently been completed. There are at least two other people here who have been closely associated with that study, Professor Newhall, University of Wisconsin, recently of Chevron Research, who will be the second speaker, and Dr. Benson of Stanford Research Insti tute, who was one of the committee members on that study. There has been some confusion about the National Academy of Sciences study, since there have been several recently in the automotive emissions area. The one which appeared in September, 1974, by the Costs/Benefit Panel received a great deal of publicity, some of it somewhat negative. I would encourage you to read all four volumes of that report. It does contain a lot of good information. It did deal with a very fuzzy subject, that of benefits vs. costs of air pollution control and, therefore, was not as precise as some would like. The report which has recently been 1 J 1,1 completed (the volumes were released last week) is called the Report by the Committee on Motor Vehicle Emissions. Because the interest is high, I'll take a moment to tell you how to get a copy. F1 Debrief – Insanity personified in a circle Christine: This is F1 Debrief - Insanity personified in a circle. Coming up on this show, we bring out the big guns to talk all things Indy 500. Our last F1 Debrief show was all about Fernando Alonso’s Indy 500 adven- ture, which is now just days away - very exciting! We got quite a bit of feedback telling us we didn’t know what we were talking about, which is a fair assessment. So to rectify the situation, we’ve roped in Pat W of the I Watch Too Much Racing blog, and Lukeh, both of whom are IndyCar fans and experts and can tell us where we’re going wrong. So, hopefully from this chat we can all learn a bit more about what to expect this weekend, and I'll be taking copious notes in case this situation should ever arise again. Mr C: Pat, firstly, give us the rundown on what's going. What is Fernando Alonso doing? Pat: Well first of all, hello, it's good to be back. It's been a while. What's he doing? He says he's going for the triple crown which is the three biggest races in the world, arguably. Which is the Monaco Grand Prix, which he's won already, the Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Part of me wonders if that's what he's doing, whether that's his real motivation, or whether he just wanted to do something different because he's bored. But I think he does want to do Indy, genuinely.
