The earliest traces of human settlements in this county are found in and near the river valleys, and it as certain as any matter which rests on circumstantial evidence, can be that the earliest clearances in the primaeval woods of Hampshire were on the gently sloping hill sides which help to form these valleys, and in those dry upper vales whicli are now above the permanent sources of the rivers.

Starting point Glenbervie Inclosure car park – map reference SU821431. At a junction take the gravel track to the left (which is also a cycle route). Follow this through the forest for about a mile and a half in a generally southerly direction, always forking left where the track splits, until it bears slightly to the right to pass a wooden gate and meet a road. 27 Walk 3 Walk 3 – Pots & Oaks Pots: Within Alice Holt Forest are the remains of large-scale pottery-making activities from Roman times. From about AD60 to the 5th century potters here produced coarse, grey kitchen wares for the London market and others in the south- east, using wood from the local forest to fire kilns constructed largely of turves. Oaks: Alice Holt Forest has been planted with oaks from medieval times – it is recorded in the Bishop of Winchester’s Pipe Rolls that 52 oaks were ‘brought from Alice Holt by John Buckingham’ in the year 1373. The Forestry Commission has no history of the forest before 1812 when the forest was re-planted after timber had been cut to build ships for the Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. It is known that in 1784 a thousand oaks were cut for this purpose.
