The Great American Car Revival Words and Photography by Howard Koby
SPECIAL EVENT : 2007 COPPERSTATE 1000 Seventeenth Annual Copperstate 1000 Road Rally THE GREAT AMERICAN CAR REVIVAL WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOWARD KOBY or 17 years the Men’s Art Council of the Phoenix Art Museum has been F giving vintage car enthusiasts the opportunity to exercise their machinery while enjoying some of the best scenery in the Southwest. On April 14, 2007, two car shows united at Tempe Diablo Stadium (home of spring training for the Los Angeles Angels baseball team). The Concorso Arizona, celebrating 60 years of Ferrari, was held in conjunction with the sendoff of the Copperstate 1000 Road Rally. Ferrari Club of America’s Concorso lined the field of the stadium with 120 exotic Italian vehicles. Concorso Arizona is the largest Ferrari gathering in Arizona and is the only IFC/PCA judged event in the state. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo owners were invited from around the country to proudly display their treasures in a “Field of Dreams” setting. Some lesser-known names such as Allard, Kurtis and Frazier-Nash added to the wide-range of cars on display. While the key purpose for many of these car shows is raising money for worthy charities like the Ronald McDonald House and the Phoenix Art Museum, having a good time is also part of the package. Judging was available for any 1997 or older Ferrari, and at the same time the blending of the concours and the Concorso Arizona — Tempe Diablo Stadium Copperstate entries created a new and Concorso Arizona — 1962 Ferrari Spyder CA — Chris Cox exciting visual treat for the hundreds of 1952 212 Ferrari Barchetta — Bill Jacobs spectators who showed up Saturday and 1960 Lotus Type 14 Elite — Jess and Eddie Marker — Copperstate sendoff from stadium 18 • September-October 2007 • ARIZONADRIVER ARIZONADRIVER • September-October 2007 • 19 Sunday morning. -

PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE Dear FCA Members: In the last issue of Sempre Ferrari , this column focused upon how you as an “Engaged Member” can make a difference in bringing the best Car Club of them all up yet another notch. And what a difference you have made! When the car hobby typically fades into Fall and the focus turns to the Darkness of Winter now before us, your involvement has failed to wane. But then, this is the land of Eternal Sunshine. In Your Area local rides have reached record levels, participation in the early Fall events has been high, registrations for the late October Avila Beach week end event has exceeded expectations and we are seeing more new faces at our monthly Board of Director meetings at the Petersen Auto Museum by members wishful to increase their involvement. As Fall moves to Winter, your Club continues to offer a choice of activities for you to enjoy. Among available choices are a Track Event, a Swap Meet which for the first time will be in conjunction with the Woodley Park Best of Italy and France Car Show, a Ride and Drive to visit the Murphy Collection in Ventura County and the Holiday Party which this year will be in Santa Monica at the Jonathan Club at the Beach. These events are in addition to the In Your Area informal gatherings on the schedules set forth in Sempre Ferrari and on- line at www.fca-sw.org. It’s up to you as an Engaged Member to take part in the fun. -

WAAAAAH . . . Rap, Waaaaah That's How a Ferrari Daytona Sounds
WAAAAAH . rap, waaaaah That’s how a Ferrari Daytona sounds when its snap changing from third to second under full braking for the S-bend which leads into Winton circuit’s pit straight. I’m watching spellbound through the viewfinder of an unfamiliar Nikon, determined to stop the silver projectile on film as the driver unleashes 352 thunderous bhp on the bumpy bitumen, five yards from my feet. Standing alone, I see the puff of blue smoke which accompanies a Ferrari gearchange and there’s a spine tingling crackle from four exhausts. He’s into the bend and looming up in the camera frame . closer and closer . only a second away now... A hand touches my elbow lightly and I’m distracted at the crucial moment but I press the button anyway. God knows where the camera’s pointing. I whirl to unleash fury on the person who’s disturbed me and I’m confronted by a small tubby, prosperous looking man in a brown car coat who says in the soft, confiding tone of the educated English, “Don’t waste your time, old man, you can’t photograph a sound”. At the time, I’m ropable, furious at having my picture spoilt. Doesn’t he know that was my second last color shot? And to make matters worse, the Daytona’s been taken off the track and it’s been replaced by an equally high born, but less photogenic 330GT. Damn. Much later it dawns on me the little man is right — the sound is everything. That’s how I remember the Ferrari Owners’ Club rally at Benalla — in a series of small, separate and highly emotive scenarios. -

It is a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, UK Supplied Right Hand Drive, Finished in Gunmetal with Black Leather Interior, it has been totally restored by Bob Houghton Ferrari in recent years and still presents beautifully. Supplied with its Ferrari Classiche Book, certified by the factory and FIVA registration papers. ‘It’s a hard muscled thoroughbred, the Daytona – easily the most awesome and yet disciplined road-going Ferrari in that firm’s brilliant quarter century of existence. The Daytona isn’t fast – it’s blinding. It will eat up a quarter-mile of asphalt in 13.2 seconds at 110mph and scream out to 175mph – or it will slug through traffic at 1,500rpm with the Sunday manners of a FIAT. It is the perfect extension of its driver. You can cut and weave through shuffling traffic with the agility of a halfback, or lope down the freeway with the piece of mind that comes from knowing you can contend with anyone’s incompetence. To say, after you’ve driven it, that the Daytona is desirable doesn’t begin to sum up your feelings – you would sell your soul for it.’ – Car & Driver, January 1970. -

In fact my chin is still recovering from the gravel rash incurred by dragging my bottom jaw around for at least two days in the immediate aftermath: 730bhp, wild aerodynamic devices like the ‘Aero Bridge’, Active Brake Cooling, a top speed of over 211mph… it’s not so much an evolutionary step as a giant leap into a tear in the time-space continuum. Right now we can only imagine how it drives (brilliantly seems a safe bet), but what we can do is look back to see what has made the front-engined Ferrari V12 berlinettas so extraordinary in the past, and perhaps identify the magic that the F12 would do well to carry into its startling new hyper-reality. -
COMPETIZIONE DAYTONAS, from $300,000 to $2,000,000 by Michael Sheehan
COMPETIZIONE DAYTONAS, FROM $300,000 to $2,000,000 By Michael Sheehan The first 365GTB/4 to be entered in competition was this example, s/n 12547, which was unsuccessfully campaigned by Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team in 1969 and 1970. It may seem that the Ferrari Daytona was always destined for a racing career. Its fabled name came from the internal designation for the new 365 GTB/4 coupe, a tribute to the 1-2-3 victory of the Ferrari 330 P4s at the 1967 Daytona 24 hours. Yet checkered flags couldn’t have been further from the factory’s plan for the 365 GTB/4. When it entered production in 1969, Ferrari was already overcommitted to both its Formula 1 program and the 512 M Sports Prototype program. With 1970 FIA regulations requiring 500 examples be built to be eligible to race in Group 4 for Special Grand Touring cars, it seemed unlikely that a Daytona would ever run in its namesake race. To top it all off, in a fit of pique over the leak of the name to the public, Enzo Ferrari dictated that “Daytona” was never to be used by the factory. ENTER NART With no factory interest or support, North American Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti and his North American Racing Team took matters into their own hands. They were the first to race a Daytona, an early production car, S/N 12547. Delivered by Scaglietti with an alloy body, a token roll cage and an outside fuel filler, Chinetti entered it in the 1969 Le Mans 24 hours.
