Chapter 1 Everyday Life of Jews in Mariampole, Lithuania 1 (1894–1911) INTRODUCTION The urge to discover one‘s roots is universal. This desire inspired me to reconstruct stories about my ancestors in Mariampole, Lithuania, for my grandchildren and generations to come. These stories tell the daily lives and culture of Jewish families who lived in northeastern Europe within Russian-dominated Lithuania at the turn of the twentieth century. The town name has been spelled in various ways. In YIVO, the formal Yiddish transliteration, the town name would be ―Maryampol.‖ In Lithuanian, the name is Marijampolė (with a dot over the ―e‖). In Polish, the name is written as Marjampol, and in Yiddish with Hebrew characters, the name is written from and pronounced ―Mariampol.‖ In English spelling, the town name ‖מאַריאַמפּאָל― right to left as is ―Marijampol.‖ From 1956 until the end of Soviet control in 1989, the town was called ―Kapsukas,‖ after one of the founders of the Lithuanian Communist party. The former name, Mariampole, was restored shortly before Lithuania regained independence.2 For consistency, I refer to the town in the English-friendly Yiddish, ―Mariampole.‖3 My paternal grandparents, Dvore Shilobolsky/Jacobson4 and Moyshe Zundel Trivasch, moved there around 1886 shortly after their marriage. They had previously lived in Przerośl, a town about 35 miles southwest of Mariampole. Both Przerośl and Mariampole were part of the Pale of Settlement, a place where the Russian empire forced its Jews to live 1791–1917. It is likely that Mariampole promised to offer Jews a better life than the crowded conditions of the section of the Pale where my grandparents had lived. -

Loyalist Jews During the American Revolution
LOYALIST JEWS DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION The Loyalist Diaspora The month of May in the Province of Ontario, Canada, is Jewish Heritage Month and to celebrate this let’s look back in history and examine the lives of a few Loyalist Jews, who, I believe during the American Revolution remained loyal to the Crown and eventually moved to Canada. But first, let’s begin by examining the American Revolution and the plight of the United Empire Loyalists (UEL). In reality, the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) was a vicious civil war pitting Rebels against Loyalists. At the beginning of the conflict people living in the colonies were divided in sentiment; some scholars argued that one-third were for independence as a republic, one-third were against independence as a republic and were loyal to the King, and the remaining one-third were neutral. By the end of the American Revolutionary War, approximately 100,000 Loyalists were forced to leave the new United States and scatter throughout the British Empire. This ‘Loyalist Diaspora’ resulted in about 90,000 coming to what is now Canada. Even before the war started, Loyalists were being severely persecuted. For example, in Connecticut, draconian ‘Committees of Observation’ were established in communities to weed-out and enforce laws against anyone who was not a ‘Patriot’. Sadly, these committees were no better than government- sanctioned mobs. Loyalists were beaten and robbed, “tarred and feathered”, hanged, and at a minimum run out of town. Profiteers grabbed their homes, farms and anything else they could get their hands on. Connecticut passed laws to ferret out and punish Loyalists. -

Bringing together original historical research on the radical press and close readings of Yiddish avant-garde poetry by Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, Peretz Markish, Yankev Glatshteyn, and others, I show that the development of anarchist modernism was both a transnational literary trend and a complex worldview. My research draws from hitherto unread material in international archives to document the world of the Yiddish anarchist press and assess the scope of its literary influence. The dissertation’s theoretical framework is informed by diaspora studies, gender studies, and translation theory, to which I introduce anarchist diasporism as a new term. -

MONDAY Praxis Poems: JUL 01 Radical Genealogies of Yiddish Poetry ANNA ELENA TORRES | Delivered in English This talk will survey the radical traditions of Yiddish poetry, focusing on anarchist poetics and the press. Beginning with the Labor poets, also known as the Svetshop or Proletarian poets, the lecture discusses the formative role of the anarchist press in the development of immigrant social worlds. Between 1890 and World War I, Yiddish anarchists published more than twenty newspapers in the U.S.; these papers generally grew out of mutual aid societies that aspired to cultivate new forms of social life. Fraye Arbeter Shtime (Free Voice of Labor)—which was founded in 1890 and ran until 1977, making it the longest-running anarchist newspaper in any language—launched the careers of many prominent poets, including Dovid Edelshtat, Mani Leyb, Anna Margolin, Fradl Shtok, and Yankev Glatshteyn. Yiddish editors fought major anti-censorship Supreme Court cases during this period, playing a key role in the transnational struggle for a free press. The talk concludes by tracing how the earlier Proletarian poets deeply informed the work of later, experimental Modernist writers. Anna Elena Torres is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Chicago. Her forthcoming book is titled Any Minute Now The World Streams Over Its Border!: Anarchism and Yiddish Literature (Yale University Press). This project examines the literary production, language politics, and religious thought of Jewish anarchist movements from 1870 to the present in Moscow, Tel Aviv, London, Buenos Aires, New York City, and elsewhere. Torres’ work has appeared in Jewish Quarterly Review, In geveb, Nashim, make/shift, and the anthology Feminisms in Motion: A Decade of Intersectional Feminist Media (AK Press, 2018). -

I left the wife of my youth and six lovely children . "Ian excellent farm, with everything comfortable around me."2 With these words, Warder Cresson, a member of a well-known Philadelphia Quaker family, described his decision to accept an appointment as the first American Consul to Jerusalem. A religious dissenter, a pioneering Zionist, the author of numerous works of theology, the subject of a bizarre suit for lunacy brought against him by his wife and children when he returned from Palestine a Jew, Cresson was an unusual personality in an age notable for self- proclaimed prophets, men who strained to see the vision of a New Jerusalem through the rising pall of an industrial age. Their steady rise in society was reflected in marriage ties with such established Quaker families as the Emlens and the Robertses. -

June 28, 2017 | Martin Kramer This is a response to The Forgotten Truth about the Balfour Declaration, originally published in Mosaic in June 2017 In 1930, the British Colonial Office published a “white paper” that Zionists saw as a retreat from the Balfour Declaration. David Lloyd George, whose government had issued the declaration in 1917, was long out of office and now in the twilight of his political career. In an indignant speech, he insisted that his own country had no authority to downgrade the declaration, because it Sara and Benjamin Netanyahu view the Balfour constituted a commitment made by all of Declaration at the British Library. The Balfour Declaration was a gesture not merely on our part but on the part of the Allies to secure that valuable support. It was prepared after much consideration, not merely of its policy, but of its actual wording, by the representatives of all the Allied and associated countries including America, and of our dominion premiers. There was some exaggeration here; not all of the Allies shared the same understanding of the policy or saw the “actual wording.” But Lloyd George pointed to the forgotten truth that I sought to resurrect through my essay. -

Gender and the Canadian Jewish Fur Trader Experience: Expansion and Colonialism in British North America – 1759 to 1812 Emily Belmonte Professor David Koffman 23 March 2021 HIST 4581 Belmonte 1 Reflecting on the early history of Jews in Manitoba with both wonder and praise, Rabbi Arthur A. Chiel declared, “Jews have penetrated into many lands of the globe… it is little wonder, then, that when the seemingly boundless regions of the New World became known to European man, Jews too made their way across the Atlantic to try their fortunes.”1 Chiel was right that in the mid-eighteenth century young Jewish men were among the European opportunists who came to North America with the dream of expanding economic profit. As historians Sheldon and Judy Godfrey have written about eighteenth-century Jewish migrants, these Jewish settler men were enticed to travel to North America due to the restrictions placed on their civil and political liberties in England.2 Simply put, migrant Jewish men were motivated to seek out places which would afford them equal opportunities as self-identified Jews, establish Jewish communities, and expand their economic prospects. In the case of the early Canadian Jewish experience, this desire to achieve economic prosperity was principally achieved through the fur trade. In the mid-seventeenth century, notes historian Ira Robinson, the fur trade was the most lucrative economic activity in New France, due to the large availability of fur-bearing animals, making the lands extremely desirable for colonists like the British.3 As a result, the climate that Jewish men entered into in North America during the 1760’s was one of intense struggle and tension between the British and French over the colony, resulting in the Seven Year’s War (1756–1763), which ended with British triumph and the collapse of New France.4 Early Jewish settlement to this area directly commenced following Britain’s acquisition of British North America in 1763 upon the signing of the Treaty 1 Rabbi Arthur A. -

The aim of this article is to focus on the language factor in Zionism and the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language in the Yishuv between 1904 and 1914. Founded in 1904, the Hebrew Language Council was expected to enhance the process of revival and, from the very beginning, an unmistakably nationalist attitude to its subject matter marked the Council’s agenda. However, the authority of the Council to make binding decisions on lin- guistic matters was contested by a number of other Zionist institutions, a development which ruined the prestige and effectiveness of the Council. The controversy resulted less from a turf war or quarrels over scarce resources than a deeper question of which institution represented the “true” Hebraic spirit. The World Zionist Organization’s decision to de- align from cultural matters, including the revival of Hebrew, worsened the conditions under which the Council operated. From a comparative per- spective, thus, the Hebrew case provides an unusual case of linguistic nationalism, which should be of interest to students of both nationalism and sociolinguistics. The majority of the scholars in the field of nationalism studies today agree on the modernity of nations and believe nations to be “constructs”, “artefacts” or “ima- gined communities”, invented by a host of nationalist ideologues since the late eighteenth century.
