Marcel Stoetzler Durkheim’s and Simmel’sreactionstoantisemitism and their reflection in their views on modern society If one ever asked oneself what sociologyisall about, one could do worse than consulting Auguste Comte’s 1822 manifesto, Prospectus des travaux scientifiques nØcessaires pour rØorganiser la societØ,the Plan of the Scientific Works Necessary for the Reorganization of Society.1 It sketches out the historical-structural task that the new discipline,whose name Comte later popularized, was supposed to fulfil, namely to end-but-preserve—as the Germans would say, aufzuheben—the Revolution: safeguard its achievements from reaction as well as from further revolutions. Sociologywould do so by separating the good bits of modernity from the bad bits. The former Comte sawasgrounded in asecular,macro- historical trend of European historyand civilization, the latter in the undis- ciplined hubris of troublemakers led astraybymetaphysicalnonsense peddled by the Enlightenment, or more precisely,bythe non-positivistic strand of the Enlightenment.Sociologywould study and understand the laws of historyand silence the metaphysical troublemakers. Sociology’s commitmenttomaking thatmessy thing called societysafe for modernity(the industrial-capitalist world system of nation states constituted and populated by modernindividuals) remained tricky.Spanners were thrown into the machineryleft, right, and centrebypeople whowere not so positive about the positivestate of society. Rather ironically,most of those whocontinued and developed the Comtean projectofsociologydid so by basing it on some of those ghastly metaphysical ideas from the Enlightenment, notably those of Immanuel Kant. Sociology, at least in France and Germany, emerged mostly as a set of differing blends of positivism and Kantian, or neo-Kantian, idealism. -

CHOOSING A LAW TO LIVE BY ONCE THE KING IS GONE INTRODUCTION Law is the expression of the rules by which civilization governs itself, and it must be that in law as elsewhere will be found the fundamental differences of peoples. Here then it may be that we find the underlying cause of the difference between the civil law and the common law.1 By virtue of its origin, the American legal profession has always been influenced by sources of law outside the United States. American law schools teach students the common law, and law students come to understand that the common law is different than the civil law, which is prevalent in Europe.2 Comparative law courses expose law students to the civil law system by comparing American common law with the law of other countries such as France, which has a civil code.3 A closer look at the history of the American and French Revolutions makes one wonder why the legal systems of the two countries are so different. Certainly, the American and French Revolutions were drastically different in some ways. For instance, the French Revolution was notoriously violent during a period known as “the Terror.”4 Accounts of the French revolutionary government executing so many French citizens as well as the creation of the Cult of the Supreme Being5 make the French Revolution a stark contrast to the American Revolution. Despite the differences, the revolutionary French and Americans shared similar goals—liberty and equality for all citizens and an end to tyranny. Both revolutions happened within approximately two decades of each other and were heavily influenced by the Enlightenment. -

Note: The Table of Contents for this volume appears at the end of the review. he appearance of a volume of essays devoted to the subject of uni- versal history will doubtless please many in the fields of Classics and Tancient historiography. The steady growth of interest in this and re- lated areas over the last several decades has made a broad study something of a necessity for the purposes of synthesising prior research and outlining paths of future study. While the fifteen essays of Historiae Mundi lack the kinds of cohesiveness and dialogue ideally suited for this purpose, they do offer a broad perspective. Drawn chiefly from the proceedings of an inter- national conference held at the University of Manchester in June , ‘Universal Historiography in Antiquity and Beyond’, the essays cover a wide set of themes and interpretive approaches, ranging from the familiar (e.g., particular studies of Polybius and Diodorus of Sicily) to the less conventional (e.g., universalism in epic poetry and in ancient economic thought). The fo- cus is predominately upon Greece and Rome, but matters of reception are considered as well, that is, the afterlife of universal history in late antique Europe, in medieval Islam, and in the modern West. There are conspicuous omissions—no paper devoted to Ephorus or Posidonius, for instance—but these are not critical. As the editors themselves point out, the purpose of the essays is not to provide an exhaustive treatment, but rather to open up new areas of inquiry by considering forms of ‘historical universalism’ beyond its conventional sources in prose historical writing (pp. -

Bernadette Filotas PAGAN SURVIVALS, SUPERSTITIONS AND POPULAR CULTURES IN EARLY MEDIEVAL PASTORAL LITERATURE Is medieval pastoral literature an accurate reflection of actual beliefs and practices in the early medieval West or simply of literary conventions in- herited by clerical writers? How and to what extent did Christianity and traditional pre-Christian beliefs and practices come into conflict, influence each other, and merge in popular culture? This comprehensive study examines early medieval popular culture as it appears in ecclesiastical and secular law, sermons, penitentials and other pastoral works – a selective, skewed, but still illuminating record of the be- liefs and practices of ordinary Christians. Gurevich . - Ethnologia Europaea 24: 119-132. The different styles of research of two historians - Jacques Le Goff and Aaron J . Gurevich - are analysed and compared. Both understand anthropology as th e basis of a new all-encompassing attempt at synthesising historical studies, and produce ind ependent results by taking into consideration lit erary-hermeneut ical, ethnological and structuralistic methods, thus forming two different co existing "styles of relationship" of medieval mentality. Le Goff and Gurevich contribute to historical anthropology and to a publicly effective renewal of the science of history through explanatory, deterministic and contemporary exam ination. An interview with A. J. Gurevich on the relationship between social history and the history of mentality is published as an append ix. Dr. phil. The Enlightenment and religion 4 France: the revolt of democratic Christianity and the rise of public opinion This chapter focuses on the emergence of religious toleration in France and the degree to which it was brought about by broad po- litico-religious struggle rather than by the philosophes.1 The discus- sion will, therefore, not provide the usual Enlightenment studies degree of focus upon the philosophes. Much of the research neces- sary for a revision of the role of the philosophes in France has been accumulating for several decades, but there has not yet been an at- tempt to bring together the various strands and integrate them into a critique of their role. Albeit slowly, from the mid 1960s a revision of the status of Pierre Bayle as a Calvinist fideist (discussed in earlier chapters) rather than an early philosophe has gradually gained ac- ceptance.2 Again rather slowly and mostly from the 1980s, there have been efforts to demonstrate that Christianity occupied a more important place in the development of the French Enlightenment than had hitherto been accepted.3 In particular there has been in- creased recognition of the role of Jansenism, especially in the land- mark suppression of the Jesuits.4 Much of the tale I recount in this chapter is, therefore, already well-known and I am indebted to the research of a number of scholars (some of whom have already been cited in earlier chapters) including R.
