  • Malpaso Dance Company Is Filled with Information and Ideas That Support the Performance and the Study Unit You Will Create with Your Teaching Artist
The Joyce Dance Education Program Resource and Reference Guide Photo by Laura Diffenderfer The Joyce’s School & Family Programs are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council; and made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Special support has been provided by Con Edison, The Walt Disney Company, A.L. and Jennie L. Luria Foundation, and May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, Inc. December 10, 2018 Dear Teachers, The resource and reference material in this guide for Malpaso Dance Company is filled with information and ideas that support the performance and the study unit you will create with your teaching artist. For this performance, Malpaso will present Ohad Naharin’s Tabla Rasa in its entirety. Tabula Rasa made its world premiere on the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre on February 6, 1986. Thirty-two years after that first performance, on May 4, 2018, this seminal work premiered on Malpaso Dance Company in Cuba. Check out the link here for the mini-documentary on Ohad Naharin’s travels to Havana to work with Malpaso. This link can also be found in the Resources section of this study guide. A new work by company member Beatriz Garcia Diaz will also be on the program, set to music by the Italian composer Ezio Bosso. The title of this work is the Spanish word Ser, which translates to “being” in English. I love this quote by Kathleen Smith from NOW Magazine Toronto: "As the theatre begins to vibrate with accumulated energy, you get the feeling that they could dance just about any genre with jaw-dropping style.

ALICIA KEYS RELEASES EMOTIONAL NEW SONG “PERFECT WAY TO DIE” “Of course there is no perfect way to die. This phrase doesn’t even make sense but that’s what makes the title so powerful and heartbreaking because so many have died unjustly. It’s written from the point of view of the mother whose child has been murdered because of the system of racism that looks at Black life as unworthy. We all know none of these innocent lives should have been taken due to the culture of police violence.” – Alicia Keys The Grammy Winner Set to Give a Special Performance of the Song during the BET Awards Broadcast on June 28 STREAM “PERFECT WAY TO DIE” DOWNLOAD ARTWORK AND LYRICS NEW YORK, NY (June 19, 2020) -- According to Alicia, “Of course there is no perfect way to die. As the outrage and protests over the repeated killings of unarmed black men and women by police and systemic racism continues, 15-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer/songwriter/producer Keys has not only joined the chorus of those who are demanding justice, but has also channeled those feelings into a haunting new ballad, “Perfect Way to Die,” out today.

Y’ALL CALL IT TECHNICAL AND PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION, WE CALL IT #FORTHECULTURE: THE USE OF AMPLIFICATION RHETORICS IN BLACK COMMUNITIES AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR TECHNICAL AND PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION STUDIES by Temptaous T. Mckoy July 2019 Director of Dissertation: Michelle F. Eble Major Department: Department of English This project seeks to define and identify the use of Amplification Rhetorics (AR) in the social movement organization TRAP Karaoke and at three Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). In highlighting the AR practices in Black communities. This project will provide insight into what these practices and spaces have to offer to the field of Technical and Professional Communication (TPC). AR is a theoretical framework that details the discursive and communicative practices, both written/textual and embodied/performative performed/used by individuals that self-identify as Black and centers the lived experiences and epistemologies of Black people and other historically marginalized groups. AR are #ForTheCulture practices that provoke change within the academy, regardless the field, however for this project I focus on the field of TPC. The phrase “For the Culture,” is used to describe or allude to an action that can benefit those individually or within a community much like TPC artifacts. This project identifies rhetorical practices located in Black spaces and communities that can be identified as TPC through the reclamation of agency, the sharing of narratives, and the inclusion of Black epistemologies. It illustrates just what it means to pass the mic and remind folks that we not ‘bout to act like there aren’t people of color at the TPC table.

  • Getting Unstuck: Common Problems in Meetings and Some Solutions
Getting Unstuck: Common Problems in Meetings and Some Solutions Sometimes meetings bog down or don’t go very well. Below are listed some of the most common problems in meetings and some techniques you might use to address them. These solutions may not work in your situation — use your own judgment. Note that many of these solutions suggest appointing a facilitator to clarify, summarize, sort, and focus discussions; a note- taker to record the minutes of the meeting; a vibes-watcher to notice poor meeting process and interrupt it; and a timekeeper to ensure that items are discussed and decided in a timely fashion. Many also suggest having a pre-prepared agenda or estab- lishing one at the outset, reviewing the agenda with everyone at the beginning, and setting aside a time at the end to evaluate the meeting process.
