Campbell and Ayşe Barut Across multiple social media platforms, the hashtag #djlife has offered a glimpse into what DJs do in both their online and offline lives. Some DJs post their remixes, others post their practice sessions or their latest booking. Globally, as nightclubs closed their doors and festivals cancelled their 2020 editions in response to COVID-19, DJs were forced to reconsider how to maintain their livelihoods. Like most performers in popular culture, the DJ’s public visibility is tied to their continued relevance, so with two major arenas—festivals and nightclubs—closed, DJs had to quickly find a way to engage their fans. For many DJs, livestreaming themselves mixing records became a way to continue connecting with their fans. While several DJs were already livestreaming, such as DJ Mel Boogie on her Toronto-based radio show Studio B on Vibe 105 FM, many more delved into streaming for the first time during the pandemic. Platforms such as Facebook and Instagram became the go-to sites for various kinds of livestream events during the pandemic.     The Matter of Black Lives: Black History and Experiences in the United States and the Question of Genocide 2017-2018, 2020 Project Report Dr. Raz Segal, Director of the MAHG Program The goal of this project, which consisted, so far, of two workshops (4-5 March 2017 and 28 February-2 March 2018)—supported by a 2020 grant, GENS, the Holocaust Resource Center, and ARHU—is to discuss and examine the history and experiences of Black Americans in relation to new issues and questions in the study of modern genocide and mass violence, particularly race and racism; slavery, segregation, and mass incarceration; and sexual violence, reproductive violence, and social destruction. The Matter of Black Lives, therefore, places systematic violence against Blacks as a central element of United States history. The relevance of these topics for students in the United States cannot be overstated, and there is much research and educational potential in the intersection of these two fields. Indeed, significant collaborations both within and outside of Stockton have emerged through this project. As the attached programs of the two workshops show, colleagues at Stockton from the programs in Sociology and Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Literature, Economics, Communications, and Africana Studies have participated in the project. And a number of prominent scholars from outside of Stockton have become our partners, including Nan Woodruff from Pennsylvania State University, Susan O’Donovan from the University of Memphis, and Alfred Frankowski from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. Furthermore, the project created new connections for Stockton faculty with a number of partners and organizations in Atlantic City and Pleasantville, where most of the sessions in both workshops took place.

INTRODUCTION Violence is a central theme in Puccini’s famous opera Turandot, portraying a Chinese princess in the middle ages. Princess Turandot routinely orders the beheading of suitors who cannot solve a three-part riddle. In the opening scene, a Persian prince is marched across the stage on his way to decapitation. Similarly, in Wagner’s Das Rheingold, two giants squabble over gold and women, and on stage, the giant Fafner “kills” his brother Fasolt. In Strauss’ opera Salome, the recently decapitated head of St. John the Baptist appears on stage as a trophy for Salome. Moving to movies, the many sagas of Italian-Americans portrayed as part of the mafia (“la cosa nostra”) in recent decades are steeped with machine gun assassinations and other types of rampant violence. Murder and mayhem are routinely absorbed by millions of Americans reading novels or watching movies in theatres and on television. Aside from violence, cultural appreciation changes over time. We need not go far back in history to remember the revulsion that lovers of Beethoven and Mozart expressed when Stravinsky, Berg, and more recently, John Adams and Phillip Glass, became mainstays of major orchestra concerts. The twentieth century has also witnessed a virtual revolution in changing 1 appreciation and taste in art—consider the virtual riots that took place in Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century after the debut of now considered masterpieces of Picasso and Matisse.
