  • Puglia and Basilicata Tour Italy: Self-Guided Cycling
Puglia and Basilicata Tour Italy: Self-Guided Cycling Fascinating Puglia and Basilicata are located in southeastern Italy in the heel of the country’s boot and offer extraordinary variety and beauty. The region is relatively unspoiled, breathtakingly beautiful, and rich with archaeological sites that harken back to the region’s strategic importance to the ancient Romans and Greeks. White washed villages are nestled against the hillside vineyards, and olive groves and wheat fields decorate the valleys. Puglia is Italy’s largest producer of vegetables, olive oil, and wine. Fresh ingredients and legendary cooking skills combine to provide visitors with a first class culinary experience. Your tour will begin with the Sassi of Matera in Basilicata, old dwellings and rock churches carved centuries ago out of the steep cliffs. Today Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage site. From Matera, you’ll bike through the Itria Valley, also called the Valley of the Trulli, where you’ll find thousands of “trulli,” limestone dwellings that are the architectural icon of Puglia. You’ll cycle on to unique Alberobello in Puglia, capital of the trulli and another UNESCO World Heritage Site. From here you’ll pedal to Martina Franca, a real Baroque gem. All around is an explosion of color, olive trees, and ancient farmhouses. Next you’ll visit Castellaneta and its beautiful beaches on the Ionian Sea, then circle back to the mysterious land of Basilicata, through the rolling hills of the Bradano Valley and past the Lake of San Giuliano, then back to Matera. You’ll certainly enjoy your stay in this fascinating and picturesque region, well known for the hospitality of its friendly people.

Giuseppe Calignano An assessment of agritourism in Salento (Apulia) in the era of the internet Abstract Apulia is the region with the highest overall growth rate of agritourism units in Italy in the period 2008-2012. This article aims at analysing and assessing the prospective demand, dynamics, evolution and number of these specifi c rural facilities in Salento – a sub-region of Apulia formed by the provinces of Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto – in the so-called “era of the internet”. By using quantitative and qualitative techniques it has been able to determine that Lecce is the leading province in Salento and in Apulia in terms of number and diffusion of agritourism facilities. Furthermore, the fi ndings of this study suggest that the possibilities offered by the internet and the new media are not suffi ciently used by agritourism operators in Salento and in other areas – like in Tuscany and Trentino-Alto Adige, where agritourism activities boast a long tradition – to promote their services and products they offer. Keywords : Agritourism, Salento, Internet. Introduction All of these subcategories – equally included in the concept of global tourism – have been created Throughout history tourism has been strongly with the aim of satisfying an increasingly demand- infl uenced and sometimes determined by chang- ing clientele. The historic center of the village and the village, in fact, is all easily accessible and can easily be walked around. The ancient heart of the town is architecturally harmonious and homogeneous. Evocative in the village is the osmosis between interior and exterior spaces, between houses, alleys and courtyards, It is the result of architectural solutions dictated by practical reasons, the so-called "spontaneous architecture", since in its construction there was not followed a predetermined plan of architects but it was human needs that regulated and determined the town: between the whitewashed houses and the narrow alleys, between the blind courtyards and the external staircases, between the arches and flowered balconies: spaces where you can meet with the villagers , where aggregation is created; shared spaces, both public and private.
