These houses were the first trulli which contributed to the expansion of the settlement. The main monument of Trani is the Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, a Greek who died in Trani in 1094 while on pilgrimage to , and some years later canonized by Urban II. It lies on a raised open site near the sea, and was consecrated, before its completion, in 1143. It is a basilica with three apses, built in the characteristic white local limestone. It has also a large crypt and a lofty tower, the latter erected in 1230-1239 by the architect whose name appears on the ambo in the cathedral of Bitonto, Nicolaus Sacerdos. It has an arch under it, being supported partly on the side wall of the church, and partly on a massive pillar. Distance: 129 km Castel del Monte Castel del Monte is a 13th century citadel and castle situated in Andria in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. In the 18th century, the castle's interior marbles and remaining furnishings were removed. It also appears on the Italian version of the one-cent euro coin. Distance: 136 km Matera Is a city and a province in the region of Basilicata. It is the capital of the province of Matera and the capital of Basilicata from 1663 to 1806. The town lies in a small canyon carved out by the Gravina. Due to the rich Baroque architectural monuments found in the city, Lecce is commonly nicknamed "The Florence of the South". The city also has a long traditional affinity with Greek culture going back to its foundation; the Messapii who founded the city are said to have been Cretans in Greek records. To this day, in the Grecìa Salentina, a group of towns not far from Lecce, the griko language is still spoken. In terms of industry the "Lecce stone" is the city's main export, because it is very soft and workable, thus suitable for sculptures. Lecce stone is a kind of limestone. Distance: 95 km The Metropolitan City of Bari is the second most important economic centre of mainland Southern Italy after Naples, and is well known as a port and university city, as well as for the basilica of Saint Nicholas. Bari is made up of four different urban sections. To the south is the Murat quarter (erected by Joachim Murat), the modern heart of the city, which is laid out on a rectangular grid-plan with a promenade on the sea and the major shopping district (the via Sparano and via Argiro). Distance: 82 km Grottaglie is located in the Salento peninsula, a whole rock of limestone dividing the from the Ionian sea. The countryside around the city is scattered with vast and deep ravines that open the ground into the heart of the limestone-rock. Distance: 41 km Torre Canne It's one of the few coastal towns that doesn't possess a defensive castle, but it does boast a tall and lovely lighthouse that still stands sentinel over the sea to protect sailors and add a dose of ambiance. The beaches here are the main attraction - long, wide swathes of golden sand fronting the shallow pristine waters of the Puglian part of the Adriatic. The town offers a quaint and laid-back atmosphere with beachfront restaurants and cafes and a smattering of shops. Distance: 20 km Marina di This area is characterized by cliffs and sandy coves. The most important are Luogovivo, La Fontana, Le Canne, Montedarena, Ospedale Capparone (o Villa Verde), Pezzarossa, Serrone, Lido Silvana (where there’s a rocky island that you can swim out to) Terrarossa e Lido Checca (southern part of Taranto). Distance: 56 km Polignano a Mare The fantastic old town sited on its rocky promontory is always going to be the star attraction of this ancient town which was probably founded originally and part of Ancient Greece as the town of "Neapolis", in fact many people still see a Greek flavour to the design and layout of the town. Another popular outing here is to take a pleasure boat trip to view some of the vast sea caves that penetrate right under and into the old town. Distance: 45 km

Monopoli is a lovely town for a day trip, possibly in combination with Polignano a Mare just up the coast, mixing a dip in the sea with a good lunch and a wander around the old town centre. Like so many towns on the Adriatic, Monopoli's history has been thoroughly influenced by its east-facing position and its fortified sea-front walls and castle tell many a story. Park in or around Piazza XX Settembre, the location of a colourful street market, and head east towards the cathedral. To find it just look upwards and you are sure to see its elegantly conceived bell tower thrusting into the sky. Built in 1693, the tower is over 60 metres high, completely dominating the town below. Passing by the cathedral (or after a quick look in), continue heading east and you will soon come to the first part of the sea-front, with its defensive walls and sandy bay, ideal for a refreshing dip. Continue down the lovely Via Papacenere, which will take you behind the walls and onto the Lungomare sea-front promenade, complete with some fine buildings, including the curvaceous Church of Santa Maria della Zaffira, a cannon-mounted bastion and the impressively robust Charles V Castle, built in 1552. It is possible to visit and the view from the top is wonderful. Distance: 39 km
