It is a unique historic town, called "Città Bianca" (the Italian for "white town"), its monuments, its baroque-style churches, are examples of the great architecture and culture that characterizes this part of Southern Italy. In the summertime Ostuni is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. Ostuni has the 5th biggest population of British residents in Italy. Ostuni is also popular with visitors from Ireland, Scandinavia and Germany who go in search of good weather and good food. This particular phenomenon is called "salentoshire" and has characterised this area of Apulia since 2010. Distance: 19 km Martina Franca Martina Franca, or just “Martina” is a municipality in the province of Taranto, Apulia (Puglia), Italy. Since 1975, the town has hosted the annual summer opera festival, the Festival della Valle d'Itria. Martina has a particularly beautiful old town surrounded by stone walls with prominent Baroque gates leading to piazzas and narrow, winding streets. Piazza Roma is the largest square in the old town, with a green space in the centre, facing the 17th century Palazzo Ducale. Distance: 7 km Locorotondo The city is known for its wines and for its circular structure which is now a historical centre, from which derives its name, which means "Round place". It is located in south-east Murgia, deep in the Itria Valley, dotted with white prehistoric roundhouses called trulli. Locorotondo is listed as one of most beautiful villages in Italy. The commune of Locorotondo produces a white Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) Italian wine that can be made in a still or sparkling Spumante style. The DOC includes 1,650 hectares (4,000 acres) of vineyards. Distance: 9 km Alberobello Literally "beautiful tree" is a small town. It has about 11,000 inhabitants and is famous for its unique trulli buildings. The Trulli of Alberobello have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. Alberobello was first mentioned in the early sixteenth century when the first 40 families aquired land to farm in the area. The abundance of calcareous sedimentary material in the area led to the building of houses with dry stone without the use of mortar. These houses were the first trulli which contributed to the expansion of the settlement. Distance: 22 km Grotte di Castellana The Castellana Caves are a remarkable karst cave system located in the municipality of Castellana Grotte. They are one of the most famous show caves of Italy. Castellana’s speleological complex is unique among other cave systems thanks to its three peculiarities: the Grave, the White Cave and the concretions. A famous show takes place here, “Hell in the Cave”, combining dance, voices, sounds and lights to make an extraordinary adventure down in Dante’s hell, having the natural scenario of the Caves of Castellana. Distance: 37 km Zoo Safari – Fasano The Zoo-Safari Fasanolandia of Fasano is one of the first zoo park in Italy and one of the biggest in Europe because of the number of animals you can find. Distance: 24 km Cisternino Cisternino sits in an historic zone of Itria Valley, known for its prehistoric conical, dry stone roundhouses called trulli, which are preserved under UNESCO safeguards due to their cultural significance, dry stone walls (muretti a secco), and its fertile soil which makes it the home of the Salento wine region. In 2014, Cisternino was declared the cittaslow city of the year. The architecture is typical of the region with an old Historical Centre containing white washed, stone buildings with cool, shaded, cave-like interiors, narrow streets and churches. Distance: 6 Km La ciclovia dell'acqua Is the second bicycle path over an aqueduct in Europe. It follows, the route of the main canal between Locorotondo (BA), across the territory of Cisternino (BR), and Ostuni (BR), to the territory of Ceglie Messaica (BR), in the vicinity of Pineta Ulmo. The 30km cycle path was recently restored and resurfaced (in pressed stone chippings), with new break and access points along the way so it is perfect for cycling. Distance: Tramonti d’Itria adjoins the bicycle path. Trani Trani has lost its old city walls and bastions, but the 13th- century fort has been extensively restored as a museum and performance venue and is open to the public. Some of the streets in and around the Ghetto area remain much as they were in the medieval period, and many of the houses display Norman decoration. The main monument of Trani is the Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, a Greek who died in Trani in 1094 while on pilgrimage to Rome, and some years later canonized by Urban II. It lies on a raised open site near the sea, and was consecrated, before its completion, in 1143. It is a basilica with three apses, built in the characteristic white local limestone. It has also a large crypt and a lofty tower, the latter erected in 1230-1239 by the architect whose name appears on the ambo in the cathedral of Bitonto, Nicolaus Sacerdos. It has an arch under it, being supported partly on the side wall of the church, and partly on a massive pillar. Distance: 129 km Castel del Monte Castel del Monte is a 13th century citadel and castle situated in Andria in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. It stands on a promontory, where it was constructed during the 1240s by the Emperor Frederick II, who had inherited the lands from his mother Constance of Sicily. In the 18th century, the castle's interior marbles and remaining furnishings were removed. It has neither a moat nor adrawbridge and some considered it never to have been intended as a defensive fortress; however, archaeological work has suggested that it originally had a curtain wall. It also appears on the Italian version of the one-cent euro coin. Distance: 136 km Matera Is a city and a province in the region of Basilicata. It is the capital of the province of Matera and the capital of Basilicata from 1663 to 1806. The town lies in a small canyon carved out by the Gravina. Known as "la Città Sotterranea" (the Subterranean City), Matera is well known for its historical center called "Sassi", considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1993, along with the Park of the Rupestrian Churches. On October 17, 2014, Matera was declared Italian host of European Capital of Culture for 2019. Distance: 81 km Lecce It is the main city of the Salentine Peninsula, a sub-peninsula at the heel of the Italian Peninsula and is over 2,000 years old. Due to the rich Baroque architectural monuments found in the city, Lecce is commonly nicknamed "The Florence of the South". The city also has a long traditional affinity with Greek culture going back to its foundation; the Messapii who founded the city are said to have been Cretans in Greek records. To this day, in the Grecìa Salentina, a group of towns not far from Lecce, the griko language is still spoken.
