PhytoKeys 103: 27–60. https://doi.org/10.3897/phytokeys.103.26029 Abstract Based on our study of 4,845 herbarium sheets of the genus Poa from the area covered by Flora iberica, namely, the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, we recognise 24 taxa (17 species, 1 subspecies and 8 varieties), mostly perennials. Most of these taxa have wide global and/or European distributions, while two (P. legionensis and P. minor subsp. nevadensis) are Spanish endemics and two have restricted distribu- tions (P. ligulata, Iberia–North Africa; P. flaccidula, Iberia–North Africa and the Balearic Islands, extend- ing to Provence, France). We have studied the original publications of more than 225 names considered as synonyms, with those more historically cited in Flora iberica taken into account in this paper; a total of 26 are new synonyms. -

Introduction and Aims The grass family (Poaceae) is one of the largest (ca. 10,000 species) and most diverse plant families among angiosperms. Grasses are useful in many different areas of life: they are major species in grasslands, meadows and pastures, backyards, parks, sport fields and roadsides, as well as essential food sources for several wild animals. Grasses are highly successful ecologically, in biomes such as steppes, savannahs, prairies and pampas they are the most dominant plant species, maintaining a whole food chain. Cereals (e.g. wheat, barley) are also members of the grass family, comprising one of our most important food even today. Under continuously changing environmental conditions, maintaining the species richness and diversity of grasses poses an important challenge for agriculture, rural development, environmental protection and the whole mankind. The genus Festuca L. is among the largest ones within the grass family (Poaceae, Pooideae, Loliineae), comprising more than 450 species (CLAYTON & RENVOIZE 1986), which are dominant taxa in temperate zone grasslands (rocky grasslands, xerophilous and mezo-xerophilous grasslands, loess steppes, sedge meadows, wet meadows, hay meadows etc.). The word “Festuca” is of Latin origin, meaning weed, weedy grass, however, due to their significant economic value, the species of the fescue genus are not treated as weeds, rather as plants of high biological-ecological importance. From these species, 135 are native taxa, and 11 are archeophytes. In addition, one taxon is now considered to be extinct. Among the 147 taxa, 8 are endemic species. Central Europe, including Poland, does not have many endemic species. Only a few dozen endemic species have been identified in this paper, mainly in the Carpathians and the adjacent uplands, e.g., the Polish Jura in southern Poland. The most numerous genera among the 32 present in the crop wild relatives (CWR) of Poaceae family are: The genus Festuca (33 species), Poa (19), and Bromus (11). In turn, ten genera are represented by only one species per genus. A good representative of groups of grasses occur in xerothermic grasslands, and other smaller groups can be found in forests, mountains, or dunes. CWR species from the Poaceae family have the potential for different uses in terms of the ecosystem services benefit. -

The majority of records are submitted by a small group of resident amateur naturalists, with contributions from visiting naturalists and professional scientists, and members of the local community. The species diversity recorded varies from year to year, reflecting the taxonomic interests and recording activities of the resident recorders and the contribution made by visiting specialists.
