THOMAS KING was born on the I4th April 1834, at Yardfoot, Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, a farm which was owned and occupied by his father. He received his early education in a small school in the village of Glenhead. He was destined to be a teacher, and in 1855, after the sale of his birthplace, and the removal of the family to Glasgow, he entered the Normal Training College of the Free Church of Scotland. The early bent of his mind revealed itself in his attendance on the class of Botany in that Institution. In 1862 he was appointed teacher of English in the Garnet Bank Academy, where, in addition to the ordinary subjects, he taught an advanced class of Botany. The work of the session, however, proved too much for his strength, which had never been robust, and he was obliged to relinquish the position. -

Det har tidigare inneburit stora satsningar på eklandskap, Omberg, skärgården, ängs- och hagmarker och våra kalkkärr och kalktorrängar. Till dessa naturtyper bör nu också de öppna sandmarkerna fogas. Denna inventering och sammanställning visar på dessa markers stora biologiska mångfald och rika innehåll av hotade och rödlistade arter. Detta är ju bra nog men dessutom betyder de solitära bina, humlorna och andra pollinerande insekter väldigt mycket för den ekologiska balansen och funktionaliteten i naturen. -

Submission from Chris Ryan on behalf of 52 Lewis and Harris businesses – 3 April 2008 Dear Sir/Madam 7-DAY FERRY SERVICES TO LEWIS & HARRIS The undersigned businesses, all based in the Western Isles, request that Sunday ferry services to Lewis & Harris should be introduced in the summer of 2008. This will be a necessary and long overdue development with the potential to improve the islands’ tourism industry in line with the Scottish Governments’ target of a 50% increase in tourism revenues. The proposed introduction of RET fares from October 2008 is also likely to result in increased demand and additional capacity will be needed to cope with peak season demand, particularly at weekends. However, our view as businesses is that Sunday services must be phased-in ahead of RET and that they should certainly be in place for summer 2008. Apart from the immediate boost for the local economy, this would give accommodation providers and tourism related businesses an indication of the response to weekend services and allow for business planning for the summer of 2009, which is the Year of Homecoming. Quite apart from the many social benefits, Sunday ferry services will make a major difference to the local economy by extending the tourist season, enabling businesses to work more efficiently and spreading visitor benefits throughout the islands. As a specific example, the Hebridean Celtic Festival, held in July, attracts over 15,000 people and contributes over £1m to the local economy. A Sunday ferry service would mean that many visitors to the festival would stay an extra night, enjoy all 4 –days of the festival and see more of the islands. -

PREFACE Since ever dwellers on the Continent were first able to navigate the ocean, the isles of Great Britain and Ireland must have been objects which excited their supreme interest. To this we owe in part the com- ing of our own early ancestors to these isles. But while we have histories which inform us of the several historic invasions, they all seem to me to belittle far too much the influence of the Norse Invasions in particular. SITE SYNOPSIS Site Name: Galtee Mountains SAC Site Code: 000646 Situated in east Limerick and south Tipperary, the Galtee Mountains are Ireland's highest range of inland mountains. Galtymore has an elevation of 920 m and the main ridge, mostly above 700 m, extends approximately 10 km from east to west. The mountains are derived from folding of Old Red Sandstone and Silurian rocks. Heath is the main vegetation type within the site, with significant amounts of humid grassland and blanket bog occurring also. There is a series of small corrie lakes on the northern side of the mountain range, and the site encompasses the headstreams of numerous tributaries of the river Suir. The cliffs above the corries support arctic- alpine vegetation and the site as a whole supports several notable Irish rarities. The site is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) selected for the following habitats and/or species listed on Annex I / II of the E.U. Habitats Directive (* = priority; numbers in brackets are Natura 2000 codes): [4010] Wet Heath [4030] Dry Heath [4060] Alpine and Subalpine Heaths [6230] Species-rich Nardus Grassland* [7130] Blanket Bogs (Active)* [8110] Siliceous Scree [8210] Calcareous Rocky Slopes [8220] Siliceous Rocky Slopes In areas of dry heath Heather (Calluna vulgaris) dominates the vegetation, with Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) also common. This habitat type often grades into wet heath and alpine/subalpine heath. It is probably best developed on the steeper slopes. Additional species recorded from the areas of alpine/subalpine heath include Dwarf Willow (Salix herbacea), Heath Bedstraw (Galium saxatile), Hare’s-tail Cottongrass (Eriophorum vaginatum), Great Wood-rush (Luzula sylvatica) and Starry Saxifrage (Saxifraga stellaris), amongst others. -

Knowledge of present-day communities and ecosystems resembling those reconstructed from the fossil record can help improve our understanding of historical distribution patterns and species composition of past communities. Here, we use a unique data set of 570 plots explored for vascular plant and 315 for land-snail assemblages located along a 650-km-long transect running across a steep climatic gradient in the Russian Altai Mountains and their foothills in southern Siberia. We analysed climatic and habitat requirements of modern populations for eight land-snail and 16 vascular plant species that are considered characteristic of the full-glacial environment of central Europe based on (i) fossil evidence from loess deposits (snails) or (ii) refugial patterns of their modern distribu- tions (plants). The analysis yielded consistent predictions of the full-glacial central European climate derived from both snail and plant populations. We found that the distribution of these 24 species was limited to the areas with mean annual temperature varying from À6.7 to 3.4 °C (median À2.5 °C) and with total annual precipitation vary- ing from 137 to 593 mm (median 283 mm).
