I would like to personally thank my fellow members of the Local Arrangements Committee -- Christian Grose and Diana O'Brien -- who were of invaluable assistance regarding the LA dining guide and finding student workers to staff the conference. Though many of us carry stereotypes about Los Angeles – its traffic, its celebrity culture, and its expensive real estate – we are thrilled to usher you into a part of Los Angeles that has continued to bounce back despite the slow economic recovery. Our conference is located in the heart of Hollywood, which has a wealth of film history and sights to see within walking distance or a short ride on the Los Angeles Metro. Springtime Los Angeles is a perfect location for hiking our canyons, trying new restaurants with kitschy themes like Thai Elvis, or seeing the Space Shuttle Endeavor up close at the California Science Center. Museums like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the La Brea Tar Pits are a cab or bus ride away from our hub in Hollywood, and the Hollywood/Highland metro stop is adjacent to our hotel. Los Angeles has changed tremendously in the past twenty years thanks to many community organizations. Their grassroots efforts successfully produced community benefits agreements that led to real estate development that is sustainable for both the environment and the residents who live in those communities. Much of the recent construction – including downtown Los Angeles’ LA Live complex– was built in partnership with community interests focused on environmental and residential sustainability. Demographically, Los Angeles is a Latino- majority city, with growing numbers of Asian American and African immigrant residents and a stable African American population. These changing demographics have produced a variety of egalitarian cross- racial political coalitions necessary for effective governance of the City of Angels in the 21st century. There are many lessons Los Angeles has for the future of local politics across the country. We encourage you to get out beyond the photo ops with “Marilyn Monroe” or “Darth Vader” that you will see in the hotel mall and enjoy lots of what Hollywood has to offer. There are so many choices it will be ii WELCOME AND SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGMENTS difficult to prioritize what to see – please know that we are happy to welcome you back for another visit to see even more of Los Angeles next time! Ange-Marie Hancock Local Arrangements Chair University of Southern California SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First and foremost, I want to thank the program committee who graciously agreed to step up and volunteer to coordinate the huge number of panels and papers we received. This was an amazing job from an incredible group of people and I owe you my thanks. I also want to thank those of you who have agreed to serve on WPSA committees for the coming year. Again, you have my gratitude and I am in your debt. A note of personal thanks to Shaun Bowler, Steve Nicholson, Matt Barreto, and Scott Gartner--my mental health committee--who have done yeoman service in keeping me glued together these last several months. Finally, and as always, a deep and heartfelt appreciation to Elsa Favila and Richard Clucas who run this association with efficiency, compassion, a spirit of community and of member service, that makes the WPSA so special, and so distinct, in the discipline of political science. Institutional support is also significant to the many opportunities available to WPSA attendees. Thanks are due to the University of Southern California’s Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the University of Southern California’s Program for Environmental and Regional Equity and the University of Southern California’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration.
