As different rulers have sought to demarcate political borders and establish varied systems of governance, water continues to link the diverse populations that now inhabit the newly independent Central Asian states of the former Soviet Union -- Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.1 Water also physically connects the Soviet successor states with their neighbors to the South, East and North. The Amu Darya or what once was referred to as the Oxus provides a vivid illustration. After originating in the mountains of northern Afghanistan and Tajikistan, the Amu Darya traverses the territory of Tajikistan before flowing downstream through Khorazm province in Uzbekistan and Dashhowuz province in Turkmenistan on its long journey toward the autonomous republic of Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan before ultimately emptying into the Aral Sea. Agajanov Contents The Oghuz ........................................ 66 The Kimek ....................................... 74 The Kïpchak ....................................... 77 The Oghuz During the ninth and tenth centuries, the nomadic Turkic Oghuz tribes formed a principal- ity on the middle and lower reaches of the Syr Darya (Jaxartes), in the Aral Sea region and the area of the northern Caspian. There are a number of obscure points in the history of the formation of the Oghuz people and principality in western Central Asia and Kazakhstan. The late S. P. Tolstov considered the home of the Oghuz to be the deserts and steppes of the Aral Sea region. In his view, they had lived there in ancient times before migrating from western to eastern Central Asia.1 In spite of its originality, however, this viewpoint did not gain general acceptance. Research in recent decades points to the conclusion that the Oghuz in western Central Asia originally came from the eastern T’ien Shan region. Oghuz historical tales relate that the headquarters of their supreme ruler or leader was at one time situated on the shores of Lake Issyk-kül. According to different versions of this legend, there was strife among the Oghuz caused by the hostile relations between their ruler and his son, Oghuz Khan. Trin. Ex Steud.) is a highly productive wetland plant and a potentially valuable source of renewable biomass worldwide. There is more than 10 million ha of reed area globally, distributed mainly across Eurasia followed by America and Africa. The literature analysis in this paper revealed that Kazakhstan alone harbored ca. 1,600,000–3,000,000 ha of reed area, mostly distributed in the deltas and along the rivers of the country. Herein, we explored 1 the total reed biomass stock of 17 million t year− which is potentially available for harvesting in the context of wise use of wetlands. -

It is the most vast Central Asian state located at the centre of Eurasia on the crossroad of an- cient historic caravan ways which linked Europe and Asia. The state has a huge potential of natu- ral resources that cased the great diversity of landscapes, ecological systems and species. Accu- mulated knowledge and rich experience of Kazakhstani researches let to develop the effective policy in this field. Biological diversity, as the rest of the natural components was mostly threatened due to such problems as drying up of the Aral Sea, nuclear tests during the forty years at the Soviet test- ing areas, and the practice of industrial and agricultural use. Despite the social and economic dif- ficulties of the transition period the way to ecologically safe and sustainable development is be- coming one of the priority directions of the development Strategy of the Republic of Kazakhstan at present time. Development of the National Strategy for implementation of the Convention goals is based on the “Strategy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Development until the Year 2030”, where priority goals and respective objectives have been clearly identified. We believe that the diversity of the animal and vegetable world that Kazakhstan possesses shall not be lost. -

This paper proposes a solution to the environmental problems in the Republic of Kazakhstan associated with the provision of the population with quality water. The authors propose to use only clear scientific forecasts, practical ecological scenarios, as well as the methodology of the National Action Plan for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development. This will allow to solve the issues of desertification, salinization, water scarcity, decline in irrigation, agriculture, and the fishing industry in the future. The purpose of the article is to reveal the reasons for the insufficiency and unevenness in the provision of water resources in the republic. In the study the principle of historicism and systems analysis is used. The results of the research confirm and indicate that the growth of the economic potential in industry and the transition to market mechanisms for the development of the economy gave rise to a reduction in reserves of clean water, shallowing of mountain and transboundary rivers, the decrease in fish populations, and the emergence of a real threat of a water ecological crisis in the republic. The obtained theoretical results of the study can be applied when discussing and significantly improving the environmental issues of water resources in the country.
