Klawon Page 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report provides hydrologic and geomor- than 10 cfs. Flood events are dramatic in phologic information to aid in the evaluation of comparison. Historical peak flow estimates for the navigability of the Big Sandy River, Santa these rivers have been estimated at 68,700 Maria River, and Burro Creek. These streams cubic feet per second (cfs) (2/9/93) for the Big flow through rugged mountainous terrain of Sandy River, 47,400 cfs (2/14/80) for Burro Mohave, Yavapai, and La Paz counties in Creek, and 23,100 cfs (3/1/78) for the Santa western Arizona and join to form the Bill Maria River. The largest flow events have Williams River at what is now Alamo Dam occurred during the winter months when and Reservoir. The rivers reflect a diversity of meteorological conditions cause a series of channel patterns, and include the mainly wide storms to pass through the region, frequently and braided sandy alluvial channels of the Big generating multiple floods within a given year. -

Spring 2017 Ironwood Forest National Monument Featured in Arizona Highways IRONWOOD FOREST This scenic drive through Ironwood Forest National Monument offers a look at some of the hardest trees in the world, along with an up-close view of one of Southern Arizona’s most distinctive peaks. BY NOAH AUSTIN / PHOTOS BY JEFF MALTZMAN Desert ironwoods aren’t as iconic as saguaros, but the trees—officially known as Olneya tesota—are the unsung heroes of much of the Sonoran Desert. They can live for centuries in the scorching heat, they provide valuable shade for young saguaros and other desert flora, and their wood is among the hardest and densest in the world—hence the name. A drive through 190,000-acre Ironwood Forest National Monument offers plenty of these desert stalwarts, along with an up-close view of one of Southern Arizona’s most distinctive peaks. From Marana along Interstate 10, head west on Marana Road. After passing through farmland and crossing the Santa Cruz River, you’ll turn right onto Silver- bell Road and begin winding into the monument. The road eventually turns from pavement to dirt, but it’s well main- tained and easy to navigate in most cars. In addition to ironwoods— identified by their blue-green leaves, grayish bark and purple spring blooms— you’ll see Ragged Top is IFNM’s defining geological feature. Arizona Geological Society Digest, Vo l ume I X, December 1971 A RE-EXAMINATION OF THE TYPE SECTION OF THE SCHERRER FORMATION (PERMIAN) IN COCHISE COUNTY, AR I ZONA By Gretchen Luepke U. S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, California INTRODUCTION Recent and current stratigraphic studies of Pennsylvanian and Permian strata in southeastern Arizona have shown a need for re-examination of t hese rocks. Many of the type sections appear to have been measured without detailed lithologic descri ptions of the rock units present. Th is treatment is particul arl y undesir abl e in the case of the abundant carbonate rocks. New methods of study are available to classify the limestones and dolomites readily, and to help make environmental interpretations . A pre liminary reconnaissance of the type section of the Scherrer Formation showed that ma ny of the rock types could be better described , and other units, previousl y missed, were now exposed by very recent erosion. The sedimentary rock nomenclature used is essentially that of R. L. Folk (1965). The term "orthoquartzite" is used for a quartz sandstone we ll cemented with silica in optical over growth. The rocks' colors were determined through use of the Rock- Color Chart (Goddard, 1948) . PREVIOUS WORK Gilluly, Cooper and Williams (1954, p . 27 ) named the Scherrer Formation and described the type section on Scherrer Ridge . The Scherrer Formation has since been described and/or mapped in many scattered l oca lities in southeastern Arizona: the Mus tang Mountains, Cottonwood-Montosa canyons area, Helvetia district, Helmet Peak, th.e Empire Mountains, and the Canelo Hills (Bryant, 1955 ); the Waterman Mountains and Kohtkohl Hill (McCly monds, 1957, 1959a , 1959b ); the Chiricahua Mountains (Sabins, 1957); the Pedregosa Mountains (Epis, 1956 ); The Wh.etstone Moun tains (Tyrrell, 1957; Creasey, 1967); Montosa Canyon (Sulik, 1957 ){ and the Red Bird Hills (Coo per, 1960). -

Geological Survey INTRODUC TION The Waterman Mountains are topographic ally typical of Basin and Rang e prov ince mountains, but they are di stingui shed because they are compo sed predominantly of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. In contrast, most nearby mountain s and hills are compos ed principally of possible Precambrian rocks or ofCretaceous( ?) and young er sedimentary, volcanic, and intrusive rocks. The interior structure of ranges in this area is known to be complex (Brown, 1939; Bromfield, 1950; Richard and Courtright, 1954). The structure in the Waterman Mountains is noteworthy because to a large extent it involves Paleozoic rocks who se stratigraphy is definable. -

Schlinger, Ph.D. ABSTRACT CHARACTERIZATION AND GROUND-WATER FLOW MODELING OF THE MINT WASH / WILLIAMSON VALLEY AREA, YAVAPAI COUNTY LUIS FERNANDO NAVARRO The characterization of the Mint Wash / Williamson Valley System (MWWVS) is a combination of geological and hydrogeological characterization of the Mint Wash / Williamson Valley area. The characterization was used to construct a ground-water flow model, used to research the water supply of the area. The geological characterization included data from previous investigations as well as data gathered through this study. The results include a geologic map, cross sections throughout the site, a synopsis of the known geological history of the area, including the identification of lithologies, and a description of the tectonic history of the area. The hydrogeological characterization included analyses of existing data, and collection and analyses of new data. A conceptual model was developed from preliminary analyses of data, then modified as more data was gathered. The characterization was used in the development of a three-dimensional finite- difference ground-water flow model. The model was calibrated to both the steady-state and transient conditions. The calibrated model was used to simulate MWWVS using several different water use scenarios and to compare these scenarios to the concept of sustainable ii yield.
