    Creation of Ultracold RbCs Ground-State Molecules DISSERTATION by Markus Debatin submitted to the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics of the University of Innsbruck in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of doctor of science advisor: Univ.Prof. Dr. Hanns-Christoph N¨agerl, Institute of Experimental Physics, University of Innsbruck Innsbruck, July 2013 Abstract Control of external and internal degrees of freedom at the level of single quantum states is essential for a series of molecular physics experiments. Heteronuclear dimers feature a large electric dipole moment, which makes them particular interesting candidates for experiments with strongly interacting quantum gases. However efficient cooling schemes such as laser cooling are difficult to realize for molecules. Therefore we create ultracold molecules from already cooled ultracold gases. This this work presents a series of experiments that has been carried out in order to create the molecules in their lowest internal quantum state. Techniques to create ultracold atoms are readily available. However, the creation of stable mixtures is still a challenge since inter-species scattering plays a role in addition to intra-species scattering physics. This requires us to cool two clouds of 87Rb and 133Cs separately and merge the clouds afterwards. After overlapping the BECs, we produce weakly bound RbCs molecules using the Feshbach-association technique. We transfer the molecules from the weakly bound state to the lowest vibrational and rotational level of the X1Σ+ electronic ground-state potential. For the transfer the initial and the final state are linked with lasers to an intermediate electronically excited state. The transfer is achieved by the Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) technique.

Blechle 2016 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT INVESTIGATIONS OF NITROGEN OXIDE PLASMAS: FUNDAMENTAL CHEMISTRY AND SURFACE REACTIVITY AND MONITORING STUDENT PERCEPTIONS IN A GENERAL CHEMISTRY RECITATION Part I of this dissertation focuses on investigations of nitrogen oxide plasma systems. With increasing concerns over the environmental presence of NxOy species, there is growing interest in utilizing plasma-assisted conversion techniques. Advances, however, have been limited because of the lack of knowledge regarding the fundamental chemistry of these plasma systems. Understanding the kinetics and thermodynamics of processes in these systems is vital to realizing their potential in a range of applications. Unraveling the complex chemical nature of these systems, however, presents numerous challenges. As such, this work serves as a foundational step in the diagnostics and assessment of these NxOy plasmas. The partitioning of energy within the plasma system is essential to unraveling these complications as it provides insight into both gas and surface reactivity. To obtain this information, techniques such as optical emission spectroscopy (OES), broadband absorption spectroscopy (BAS), and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) were utilized to determine species energetics (vibrational, rotational, translational temperatures). These temperature data provide mechanistic insight and establish the relationships between system parameters and energetic outcomes.

Mit im Boot sind erneut das Klavier- Festival Ruhr, das blicke Filmfesti- val, WortLautRuhr und die Folkwang Universität der Künste. Kultstatus genießen mittlerweile die Shows von Alpcologne, dem Illuminist, den Physikanten oder den Firedancern. Die 8-Stunden-ExtraSchicht öffnet thematisch einen breiten Fächer: von Science- Slam bis Bier brauen, von explodierenden Gurken bis Lachyoga, von literarischer Lesung bis Wildwest-Romantik ist alles dabei. Auf unterhaltsame Weise Neues erkunden – viele spannende Führungen gewähren Blicke auf sonst Verborgendes: riesige Werksgelände, Hochöfen und Katakomben, spannende Geschichten ehe- maliger Bergleute inklusive.

Ferdinand Hodler and Modernist Berlin 10.9.21 – 17.1.22 Ferdinand Hodler’s evocative figure paintings, moun- tain landscapes and portraits are Modernist icons. The Swiss artist (1853–1918), an influential force in symbolism, drew great international acclaim even in his own lifetime. Contemporaries valued Hodler above all as a master of human characterisation: as the artist Paul Klee noted in 1911, he could “create the soul by painting the body”. Few people realise today that Hodler’s path to fame lay through Berlin. These cities Exhibitions offered Hodler a chance to publicise his work outside Switzerland. The exhibition “Ferdinand Hodler and Modernist Berlin” traces his success on the banks of 2 021/22 the Spree. From 1898 until the outbreak of the First World War, the artist exhibited here almost annually: first at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, then at the Berlin Secession and in a number of galleries. The presentation at the Berlinische Galerie will bring together about 50 paintings by Hodler from German and Swiss collections, including 30 from the Kunst- museum Bern, our partner in this collaboration. It will also feature works by artists who exhibited with Hodler in Berlin, including Lovis Corinth, Walter Leistikow, Hans Thoma and Julie Wolfthorn. The exhibition is a cooperation between the Berlinische Galerie and the Kunstmuseum Bern.

Jarausch) Since its creation in 1950 as a subsidiary of the Cultural League, the East German Writers Union embodied a fundamental tension, one that was never resolved during the course of its forty-year existence. The union served two masters – the state and its members – and as such, often found it difficult fulfilling the expectations of both. In this way, the union was an expression of a basic contradiction in the relationship between writers and the state: the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED) demanded ideological compliance, yet these writers also claimed to be critical, engaged intellectuals. This dissertation examines how literary intellectuals and SED cultural officials contested and debated the differing and sometimes contradictory functions of the Writers Union and how each utilized it to shape relationships and identities within the literary community and beyond it. The union was a crucial site for constructing a group image for writers, both in terms of external characteristics (values and goals for participation in wider society) and internal characteristics (norms and acceptable behavioral patterns guiding interactions with other union members).

As contemporary witnesses, artists documented and commented on the political struggles and social changes of those years with a sharp eye and a deft pen; it was a time when Berlin was developing into a scintillating big city of entertainment after the world war and revolution. Not without sympathy, artists traced the deep lines that a struggle to survive had etched into the faces of people chasing after happiness on the city's boulevards, at its bars, or in the gloomy dance halls of the working men's pubs. This exhibition with circa 60 works from our own collections, supplemented by some loans, will show works on paper by artists including Max Beckmann, Chas-Laborde, Otto Dix, Dolbin, Heinrich Ehmsen, Lilo Friedlaender, Rudolf Großmann, George Grosz, Karl Holtz, Karl Hubbuch, Jeanne Mammen, Gertrude Sandmann, Rudolf Schlichter, Gerd Wollheim and Richard Ziegler.
