Herein, we present data on the female reproductive cycle, body size at sexual maturity, litter size and fat-body cycle of one of the world's southernmost reptiles, Liolaemus sarmientoi. We also provide preliminary data on the reproductive cycle of a sympatric species, L. magellanicus. Females of both species start vitellogenesis in late spring, probably arrested or continued at very low rates during brumation resumed in the spring of the next year. Pregnancy starts in spring and births of L.

Bean Life Science Museum, Brigham Young University (BYU), Provo, UT 84602, USA Abstract Recent conceptual and methodological advances have enabled an increasing number of studies to address the problem of species delimitation in a comprehensive manner. This is of particular interest in cases of species whose divergence times are recent, where the con- clusions obtained from a single source of evidence can lead to the incorrect delimitation of entities or assignment of individuals to species. The southernmost species of the Liolaemus kingii group (namely L. baguali, L. escarchadosi, L. sarmientoi, L. tari and the candidate species L. sp. A) show widely overlapping distributions as well as recent mitochondrial divergences, thus phylogenetic relationships and species boundaries are ambiguous. Here we use a comprehensive approach to assess species limits and corroborate their status as independent lineages through the use of four sources of molecular and morphological in- formation (mitochondrial cytochrome-b, nuclear sequences collected by ddRADseq, and linear, meristic and landmark-based morphometrics).

Potential benefits from global warming to the thermal biology and locomotor performance of an endangered Patagonian lizard Facundo Cabezas-Cartes*, Jimena B. Fernández*, Fernando Duran and Erika L. Kubisch Laboratorio de Ecofisiología e Historia de vida de Reptiles, Instituto de Investigaciones en Biodiversidad y Medio Ambiente, Universidad Nacional del Comahue, CONICET, San Carlos de Bariloche, Río Negro, Argentina * These authors contributed equally to this work. ABSTRACT Global warming can significantly affect many aspects of the biology of animal species, including their thermal physiology and physiological performance. Thermal performance curves provide a heuristic model to evaluate the impacts of temperature on the ecophysiology of ectotherms. When integrated with other thermal biology parameters, they can be used to predict the impacts of climate change on individual fitness and population viability. In this study, we combine holistic measures of thermal physiology and the thermal sensitivity of locomotor performance with environmental temperatures measured at fine scale to estimate the vulnerability to global warming of the endangered Patagonian lizard Phymaturus tenebrosus. Our results indicate that this lizard exhibits its preferred temperatures and maximum locomotor performance at higher temperatures than the mean temperature it currently experiences in its habitat. In addition, it exhibits a low effectiveness of thermoregulation, being a poor thermoregulator. In view of the results obtained, we suggest that the climatic conditions of Patagonia may be advantageous for Submitted 4May2019 Accepted 8 July 2019 P. tenebrosus to survive future global warming, since its thermal physiology and Published 9 August 2019 locomotor performance may improve under increasing in environmental Corresponding author temperatures in its habitat.

  • Behavioral and Physiological Polymorphism in Males of the Austral Lizard Liolaemus Sarmientoi
Journal of Comparative Physiology A https://doi.org/10.1007/s00359-017-1233-1 ORIGINAL PAPER Behavioral and physiological polymorphism in males of the austral lizard Liolaemus sarmientoi Jimena B. Fernández1 · Elizabeth Bastiaans2 · Marlin Medina3 · Fausto R. Méndez De la Cruz4 · Barry R. Sinervo5 · Nora R. Ibargüengoytía1 Received: 12 May 2017 / Revised: 15 November 2017 / Accepted: 23 November 2017 © Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2017 Abstract Integrative behavioral studies show that the interplay between individual physiology and social behavior influences the ecology of the species, ultimately affecting individual fitness. Particularly in lizards, color polymorphism is associated with differential behaviors and reproductive strategies, which are evident in mature males during the mating season. Dominant males generally have greater endurance, higher body temperature, and larger bodies than submissive males, so they can acquire and defend larger territories and have greater access to females for mating. We studied whether the color morphs observed in males of one of the world’s southernmost reptiles, Liolaemus sarmientoi, are related to behavioral variation dur- ing agonistic interactions, thermal physiology, morphology, and/or locomotor stamina. Liolaemus sarmientoi males exhibit three color morphs: red (RR), red–yellow (RY), and yellow (YY). These lizards exhibit subtle behavioral displays and we did not observe stamina differences among morphs. However, we found that RR males are more aggressive than YY males during agonistic encounters. In addition, greater body temperature change during trials, higher field body temperatures, and greater head sizes of RR males compared to RY or YY indicate that RR is a dominant morph, which may influence their ability to acquire and defend territory and tactics for achieving reproductive success.

With 7 figures Past and present taxonomy of the Liolaemus lineomaculatus section (Liolaemidae): is the morphological arrangement hypothesis valid? MARÍA FLORENCIA BREITMAN*, MARIANA MORANDO and LUCIANO JAVIER AVILA Diversidad, Sistemática y Evolución, CONICET-CENPAT, Boulevard Almirante Brown 2915, Puerto Madryn, Chubut U9120ACD, Argentina Received 10 December 2012; revised 11 March 2013; accepted for publication 12 March 2013 Twenty-one species of lizards are included in the southernmost clade of South America, the Liolaemus line- omaculatus section. There are two hypotheses of species-grouping within this section, one based on morphological similarities and the other based on molecular phylogenetic relationships; although discordant, both are in use. The ‘morphological arrangement hypothesis’, which sorts the species of the section in three groups, was proposed ~30 years ago; however, despite taxonomic changes and almost doubling the species diversity of this section since then, the hypothesis has never been tested. Here, we (1) present an updated chronological review of taxonomic changes, species descriptions, morphological groups, and genetic clades proposed for the L. lineomaculatus section, and (2) evaluate the accuracy of the ‘morphological arrangement hypothesis’. We show that the tradi- tional practice of classifying 11 of these species in two of the three traditional morphological groups of the section (Liolaemus kingii and Liolaemus archeforus), which is not supported by molecular data, is also not supported by morphological data, and therefore should be abandoned; we suggest referring to this group of species as the L.

Bucci, INBIOP, National Scientific and Technical Research, Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut, Argentina Despite being an underpopulated region, Patagonia has attracted the attention of scientists since the very beginning of its settlement. From classical explorers such as Darwin or D’Orbigny, to modern science including nuclear and satellite developments, several disciplines have focused their efforts on unraveling Patagonia’s natural and social history. Today, scientific and technological research is shifting from being shaped by northern agendas, towards more locally oriented objectives, such as the management of natural resources, the modernization of energy production and distribution, and the coexistence of rural and cosmopolitan social lifestyles. At the intersection of all these topics, new conflicts concerning the economy, human development, population, and the proper and long-standing planification and management of the landscape and its natural resources have emerged. These conflicts, of course, have also caught the attention of many interdisciplinary research groups. This series is aimed at describing and discussing various aspects of this complex reality, but also at bridging the gaps between the scientific community and governments, policymakers, and society in general. The respective volumes will analyze and synthesize our knowledge of Patagonian biodiversity at different scales, from alleles, genes and species, to ecosystems and the biosphere, including its multilevel interactions.
