Universidad Católica de Chile, Casilla 114-D, Santiago, C.P. 6513677, Chile, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The behavioral and physiological thermoregulation of three Atacama desert-dwelling Liolaemus lizards was studied and compared with previous data on Liolaemus from other ecosystems. The thermoregulatory mechanisms of the desert-dwelling species differed from those of the others, a consequence of differences in the habitat structure of the species. Desert species have higher critical thermal minima and, contrary to expectations, lower selected body temperatures than Liolaemus from Mediterranean environments. Results of the rates of thermal time constants suggest mechanisms to cope with the fast decrease of environmental temperature that occurs in the desert during the mid-afternoons. -

Herein, we present data on the female reproductive cycle, body size at sexual maturity, litter size and fat-body cycle of one of the world's southernmost reptiles, Liolaemus sarmientoi. We also provide preliminary data on the reproductive cycle of a sympatric species, L. magellanicus. Females of both species start vitellogenesis in late spring, probably arrested or continued at very low rates during brumation resumed in the spring of the next year. Caldwell, Chair Autotomy is the shedding of a body part as a means of secondary defense against a predator that has already made contact with the organism. This defense mechanism has been widely studied in a few model taxa, specifically lizards, a few groups of arthropods, and some echinoderms. All of these model organisms have a hard endo- or exo-skeleton surrounding the autotomized body part. There are several animals that are capable of autotomizing a limb but do not exhibit the same biological trends that these model organisms have in common. As a result, the mechanisms that underlie autotomy in the hard-bodied animals may not apply for soft bodied organisms. A behavioral ecology approach was used to study arm autotomy in the octopus, Abdopus aculeatus. Investigations concentrated on understanding the mechanistic underpinnings and adaptive value of autotomy in this soft-bodied animal. A. aculeatus was observed in the field on Mactan Island, Philippines in the dry and wet seasons, and compared with populations previously studied in Indonesia. -

This is of particular interest in cases of species whose divergence times are recent, where the con- clusions obtained from a single source of evidence can lead to the incorrect delimitation of entities or assignment of individuals to species. The southernmost species of the Liolaemus kingii group (namely L. baguali, L. escarchadosi, L. sarmientoi, L. tari and the candidate species L. sp. A) show widely overlapping distributions as well as recent mitochondrial divergences, thus phylogenetic relationships and species boundaries are ambiguous. Here we use a comprehensive approach to assess species limits and corroborate their status as independent lineages through the use of four sources of molecular and morphological in- formation (mitochondrial cytochrome-b, nuclear sequences collected by ddRADseq, and linear, meristic and landmark-based morphometrics). -

Fue tratada en ese estatus desde su descripción hasta que, Vera-Escalona et al. (2012) la elevaron a nivel de especie plena, lo que se conserva hasta hoy (Demangel 2016, Mella 2017). ANTECEDENTES GENERALES Aspectos Morfológicos Lagartija de tamaño mediano (longitud hocico-cloaca = 59 mm), y aspecto proporcionado, cuello fuertemente plegado, abdomen robusto, extremidades delgadas y dedos largos (Mella 2017). En el dorso del cuerpo las escamas son subtriangulares, imbricadas y quilladas. Las escamas del vientre son levemente más grandes que las dorsales, redondeadas, imbricadas y lisas. En el medio del cuerpo hay de 63 a 73 escamas. Los machos presentan dos a tres poros precloacales, las hembras no tienen poros precloacales (Pincheira-Donoso y Núñez 2005). La coloración dorsal es café claro u oliváceo, al igual que la cabeza. El dorso presenta una banda occipital poco definida y un par de bandas dorsolaterales café amarillentas, de origen supraocular y atravesadas por barras transversales negras (Mella 2017). Aspectos Reproductivos y Conductuales Territorial y no muy tímida, se mueve en la vegetación arbustiva y sobre los troncos caídos (Mella 2017). Se refugia en arbustos, bajo troncos o piedras (Demangel 2016). -
Ecological Functions of Neotropical Amphibians and Reptiles: a Review

Nevertheless, little is known about their role in maintaining and regulating ecosystem functions and, by extension, their potential value for supporting ecosystem services. Here, we review research on the ecological functions of Neotropical herps, in different sources (the bibliographic databases, book chapters, etc.). A total of 167 Neotropical herpetology studies published over the last four decades (1970 to 2014) were reviewed, providing information on more than 100 species that contribute to at least five categories of ecological functions: i) nutrient cycling; ii) bioturbation; iii) pollination; iv) seed dispersal, and; v) energy flow through ecosystems. We emphasize the need to expand the knowledge about ecological functions in Neotropical ecosystems and the mechanisms behind these, through the study of functional traits and analysis of ecological processes. Many of these functions provide key ecosystem services, such as biological pest control, seed dispersal and water quality. By knowing and understanding the functions that perform the herps in ecosystems, management plans for cultural landscapes, restoration or recovery projects of landscapes that involve aquatic and terrestrial systems, development of comprehensive plans and detailed conservation of species and ecosystems may be structured in a more appropriate way. Besides information gaps identified in this review, this contribution explores these issues in terms of better understanding of key questions in the study of ecosystem services and biodiversity and, also, of how these services are generated. -
Biology of the Austral Pygmy-Owl

JAKSI~~ ALETRACT.-Scatteredinformation on the Austral Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium nanum), pub- lished mostly in Argentine and Chilean journals and books of restricted circulation, is summarized and supplementedwith field observations made by the authors. Information presentedand discussedincludes: taxonomy, morphometry, distribution, habitat, migration, abundance,conservation, reproduction, activity, vocalization, behavior, and diet. The first quantitative assessmentof the Austral Pygmy-Owl’s food habits is presented,based on 780 prey items from a singlecentral Chilean locality. Their food is made up of insects (50% by number), mammals (320/o),and birds (14%). The biomasscontribution, however, is strongly skewed toward small mammals and secondarily toward birds. Received 13 Jan. 1988, ac- cepted 29 Jan. 1989. The Austral Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium nanum) is a little known owl of southern South America (Clark et al. 1978). During a field study on the raptors of a central Chilean locality, we found a small poulation of Austral Pygmy-Owls which were secretive but apparently not scarce. Because the literature on this species is widely scattered, mostly in little known and sometimes very old Chilean and Argentine books and journals, we decided to summarize it all in an account of what is known about the biology of this interesting species and to make this wealth of information available to interested ornithologists worldwide. We present a summary of our review of the literature, supplemented by our own observations. In ad- dition, we report firsthand biological information that we have collected on Austral Pygmy-Owls in our study site, including an analysis of the first quantitative data on the food habits of the species. -

In this study, we describe a new species of the L. elongatus Editor Asociado: J. Goldberg group. The new taxon is distributed in the vicinity ofL. burmeisteri, L. crandalli, L. gununakuna, L. punmahuida and L. tregenzai, and posseses a combination of unique character states and morphological characters that allows its formal description as a new species.
