ST. RICHARD PARISH FAMILY MASS What Is a Family Mass? A Family Mass gives children and their families a greater sense of participation in the Sunday Mass of the parish. We have Bill Monaghan, a guest musician who leads us in song using a blend of traditional and contemporary songs. Bill and his ensemble incorporate keyboard, guitar, drums, and trumpet into their ministry for a very uplifting and energetic celebration of Sunday Mass. How Can We Participate? While the Family Mass is open to everyone in the parish, families are invited to serve in the various liturgical ministries during Mass. Families are invited to participate as lectors, gift bearers, altar serv- ers, and greeters. If you would like to participate as a family or volunteer an individual in your family, please contact the Director of Faith Formation, Maryellen Carroll. We will practice with the Lectors (Readers of Sacred Scripture) and give instructions to the other volunteers. This is a wonderful oppor- tunity for the rest of the parish, especially the elders, to see the parish families participating at Mass. You can volunteer for one Mass or more. When Is the Next Family Mass? There are six Family Masses scheduled for this year. The Mass time is 11:30 AM at St. Richard Church.     THE NEW GEOPOLITICS FEBRUARY 2018 EUROPE THE WEST’S TURKEY CONUNDRUM AMANDA SLOAT BROOKINGS – ROBERT BOSCH FOUNDATION TRANSATLANTIC INITIATIVE THE WEST’S TURKEY CONUNDRUM AMANDA SLOAT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Policymakers in the United States and European Union are struggling with how to manage their relations with Turkey. What makes the country such a conundrum is that its problematic leadership faces real threats. Turkey is confronting challenges from the aftermath of the July 2016 coup attempt and the destabilizing effects of the Syrian war. Yet the country’s president is growing more authoritarian, using virulent anti-Western rhetoric, and making foreign policy choices contrary to the interests of the trans-Atlantic alliance. The policy goal is navigating this gray zone today to preserve the possibility of better relations in the future. The paper begins by examining the main domestic and regional challenges facing Turkey, as well as how these issues impact the country’s relations with its Western allies. It then outlines three possible policy responses for the United States and Europe: abandonment, transactionalism, and engagement. The paper makes the case for taking a long view, as the current period before Turkey’s parliamentary and presidential elections (due sometime before November 2019) will remain difficult. The degree of political, security, socio-economic, and cultural integration between Turkey and the West requires a nuanced and supple style of relationship management. Specifically, the paper advocates for constructive and principled engagement. This entails widening the aperture of government outreach to more officials on a broader range of shared interests; using the prospect of deeper trade and investment links to encourage better governance; expanding people-to-people ties and supporting civil society; and staying true to Western values by speaking out about rule of law and human rights abuses.

    S PRING THE BELLS OF IOWA STATE 2020 C OMMEN C EMENT THE HISTORY OF “THE BELLS OF IOWA STATE” James C. Wilson (1900-1995) was a member of Iowa State’s English faculty from 1928 to 1931. He had to resign due to his lack of a Ph.D., and prior to his departure, he submitted a college song candidate for a song contest sponsored by the Iowa State Club of Chicago. Jim and his wife, Alice, moved to Chicago where as he notes, “We (in addition to their two babies) had $212 in cash from my last paycheck, our five-year-old Chevrolet, and the tent.” He won first place with “The Bells of Iowa State,” and the family was able to purchase a Iowa State University Library PRING OMMENCEMENT Special Collections Department small cottage on Lake Michigan. This book, identical in format with mono graphs on Harry Callahan and Dorothea Lange, contains a retrospective sampling of Brassai's finest work, ranging over some four decades. There are portraits of famous artists and of un known workmen and cocottes, a selection of his famous series on the streets of Paris by night, and his sensitive renderings of wall graffiti. In all of them appears the seemingly paradoxical com bination of painstaking craftsmanship and ro mantic sensitivity that makes his work so appeal ing and so moving.

Neoclassicism and Camp in Sir William Hamilton’s Naples Abstract Susan Sontag, in her now-classic “Notes on Camp” (1964), traces the origins of camp to the eighteenth century (13, 14, 33). And although it is precisely the baroque and rococo art movements against which Winckelmann rebelled that Sontag identifies as camp, it is worth reflecting on whether the notion of imitation that is central to both movements – imitation of ancient works in the case of neoclassicism, and imitation as parody in the case of camp (Meyer 7) – might not bring the two closer.
