THE FORESTER KANGAROO By Steven Katsineris In Tasmania, the Eastern Grey Kangaroo is known as the Forester Kangaroo. This subspecies of the Eastern Grey Kangaroo is the only kangaroo found in Tasmania. Since my mid teens I have done a lot of travelling around Tasmania, camping and bush walking, including many trips through the Midlands area and to the northeast coastal region. On one such trip in the northern Midlands I was lucky enough to see three Forester Kangaroos hopping around in a paddock at dusk. On that occasion the light was dim, I was driving and they were some distance away. Still my first sighting of these impressive kangaroos was exciting. A number of times after that though I observed small groups of them up close resting in the shade, laying in the sun or feeding while bush walking on the northeast coast. I usually see them in the open grassy areas, mainly in the early mornings and evenings, but occasionally during the day. I have found that one of the best places to spot Forester Kangaroos in the wild is in the Mt. William National Park in the northeast of the state, where they are abundant. This Kangaroo is the largest of Tasmania’s mammals, with the males standing over 1.5 metres tall. They are a fawnish-grey to grey colour, paler on the chest and stomach. Males are bigger and heavier than the females. They are mainly active feeding at night, but will also feed in the early mornings and in the evenings. They generally lay under trees resting in shady spots through the daylight hours. They feed on various grasses, herbs as well as some shrubs. Forester Kangaroos are to some extent social animals, usually gathering in small family groups of three or four, but also come together in larger mobs of ten or more. They make clucking sounds, grunts and coughs to communicate among themselves. They breeds throughout the year, but mostly during the summer. They usually have only one young. The offspring stay in the pouch for about 10 months and then live with the mother for another eight months before parting. They inhabit open grassland and dry sclerophyll forests.

The Forester Kangaroo is found in the northeast and some parts of the northern Midlands of Tasmania. Their distribution was once more Ph. (03) 5783 1773 widespread, but due to hunting in the 1950s and 60s their range became restricted and the population declined significantly. They are 1180 Wallan–Whittlesea Road, now a wholly protected species and their numbers have recovered. There are also mobs in Tasmania’s various wildlife parks making it easy FIRE WOOD for people to observe and get up close to them. In these parks they have become quite familiar with people and very friendly. I like the ‘country came and set up stalls to sell their fresh produce. This was the start feel’ of the town. I also love the way the town rallies together in times of the next stage of the Market and the birth of the Mernda “Trash & of need. Treasure” Market. The “trash and treasure” market traded in the car What changes would you like to see in the township? But then the approaching urban fringe, drought, rising costs and the requirements by Council forced the closure of the auction and then later on the market. The Mernda Market was an icon in the local area and it was thought that it should not die completely but be re-located. In May 2012, the Whittlesea Showgrounds & Recreation Reserves Committee of Management were approached to ‘take over’ the Mernda ‘Trash & Treasure’ market by present stallholders. And from that … I guess the rest is history. The Whittlesea Monday Market is operated and managed by volunteers and the Whittlesea Showgrounds & Recreation Reserves Committee of Management. This small dedicated group of people work before the sun comes up and all through the week to ensure that the Market runs. Graeme Hunter, Chair Person and also a volunteer at the Whittlesea Monday Market stated, ‘We are very proud that we have now reached 250 Markets. ART FOR FUN on Mondays with Rae Beers is a popular with the budding artists who by the way have had their own exhibitions and WHITE LADY FUNERALS have sold their work. 25 Cooper Street, Epping Tel. 03 9408 4200 JEWELLERY making with Natalie Lim on Tuesdays. This has become an interesting and popular class and some of the members have sold their wares. This class is especially designed for the beginner in jewellery making. It will involve completing simple (to more advance) projects and learning the basic skills needed to achieve this. You will be working mainly with wire and various types of beads. Projects will include necklaces, bracelets and earrings. It will be necessary for participants to have their own basic kit of jewellery tools and the type will be discussed during early class sessions. There is a cost of $5 per week for this class. This will provide all the materials needed to complete the various projects including the beads, wire and various other findings (bits and pieces needed to finish off your project). Get together with some KNITTERS. Blankets, jumpers, teddies, scarves and many small items have been made and donated to charity. This is another group that has grown since its conception. We’re a friendly bunch. Not to forget about the CROTCHET class. Items have been made, sold and some donated to charity. Another handicraft is HAND EMBROIDERY run by John Griffin. This group meets at the Mill Park meeting place, The Promenade in South Morang. Many different mediums are developed using different materials & threads such as: Hand Felting, Felted Beads, Crazy Patchwork, Wool Embroidery, Beading, Ribbon Embroidery, Surface Stitchery, etc. All of these with lots of embellishing. BUSY HANDS CIRCLE run by Margaret Cassidy - In this class, we finish our unfinished projects (sewing, quilting, patchwork, embroidery, knitting, etc.) and we have fun as well. If one of the above classes hasn’t captured your interest, why not try FLORAL ARRANGING FOR BEGINNERS AND ADVANCED run by Diana Hong. Required Personal Materials: Fresh Flowers, Leaves, Floral Foam, Secateurs/Scissors, Floral, Tap Wires, and Containers. A new exercise class has just been added - FELDENKRAIS - AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT run byMedhavi Verma. Needed: Own Exercise Mat, Water Bottle and Towel The aim of this class is to improve balance and flexibility in order to make life and movement easier. After an initial individual assessment, the general repetitive exercises will show you how to develop a general awareness of your body. All participants will learn techniques that focus on specific areas of the body and improve movement. Everyone in the organisation is a volunteer.
