  • When Indonesians Routinely Consume Korean Pop Culture: Revisiting Jakartan Fans of the Korean Drama Dae Jang Geum
International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 2288–2307 1932–8036/20170005 When Indonesians Routinely Consume Korean Pop Culture: Revisiting Jakartan Fans of the Korean Drama Dae Jang Geum JAE-SEON JEONG1 Hallym University, Republic of Korea SEUL-HI LEE Yong In University, Republic of Korea SANG-GIL LEE Yonsei University, Republic of Korea The consumption of Korean popular culture has increased continuously in Indonesia since the early 2000s. This article investigates how “Hallyu” (the Korean Wave) is appropriated and experienced by Indonesian fans in their daily lives. Following up on our work in 2006, we carried out interviews in 2013 with 12 Indonesian supporters who had participated in the prior qualitative research on the Indonesian reception of the Korean television drama Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace). First, this article examines the historical development of the Hallyu phenomenon in Indonesia with rapidly digitalized mediascape of the country. Next, we examine the salient features of the appropriation of Korean pop culture and investigate the hybrid cultural resources and experiences. We focus in particular on how our interviewees construct and use a certain imaginary of “Koreanness” as a consequence of negotiation in relations of symbolic power. Finally, we discuss implications of the routinized consumption and habituation of Hallyu by its transnational audience to understand its cultural impact and significance in the global context. Keywords: Hallyu, Indonesia, the Korean Wave, national symbolic power, cultural appropriation, Koreanness The popularity of Korean dramas televised across Asia began in the late 1990s, and since the “Hallyu” (or Korean Wave), it has evolved into a global phenomenon.

Second Language Acquisition of Korean Case by Learners with Different First Languages Hyunjung Ahn A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2015 Reading Committee: Julia Herschensohn, Co-chair Edith Aldridge, Co-chair Barbara Citko Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Linguistics 1 ©Copyright 2015 Hyunjung Ahn 2 Abstract Second Language Acquisition of Korean Case by Learners with Different First Languages by Hyunjung Ahn Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics University of Washington, Seattle This dissertation examines the role of L2 learners’ first language (L1) in acquiring a target morpho-syntactic feature (case) and learner perceptions of the L2 grammar, specifically, Korean case and case particles. In addition to investigating what and how much is transferred from the L1, the study also looks to see if learners’ perceptions match their actual production. In order to answer these research questions, two quantitative and one qualitative study were used. The initial quantitative study was conducted using an expanded grammaticality judgment task completed by 25 English L1 learners of Korean, with 15 Korean L1 controls. The Key findings from that studied suggest that English L1 learners of Korean acquired nominative case earlier than the accusative case, patterning with Korean L1 acquisition. Also, learners accurately identified the incorrect usage of nominative particles 60% of the time, but only 51% for accusative particles. Building on the findings of that study, speaking and written production tasks were completed by 70 L2 Korean learners, who were divided into nearly equally-sized groups for three different L1s (22 Chinese, 27 English and 21 Japanese).

The women are first attracted to the culture by Korean pop music (K-pop) and Korean dramas (K-dramas) and then become more interested in learn- ing about Korean culture and language. The purpose of this study is to show how a university Korean club and the Korean Cultural Center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) provide the experiential perspectives necessary to gain intercultural competence and an appreciation for Korean culture. Methods: We surveyed 23 female Korean Club members in the UAE to understand why they are interested in Korean culture and analyzed the winning speech of the 2019 Korean speech contest to see if students had gained intercultural communication compe- tence and an appreciation for Korean culture. Results: We found that Emirati females are initially drawn to Korean culture by Hallyu, specifically by Korean pop music and dra- mas. The students then become interested in learning the Korean language and other opportunities to learn more about Korea. In- volvement in university Korean clubs helps students immerse themselves in Korean culture and language while living in the UAE.

The Real K-Pop Idols of Fanfiction: Reclaiming “Real Person” Fanfiction as K-Pop Industry Practice Sooyun (Clara) Hong East Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts McGill University, Montreal June 2020 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts ©Sooyun Hong, 2020 1 Table of Contents Abstract 3 Abrégé 4 Acknowledgements 5 Introduction 6 Chapter 1 – What’s in a (Stage) Name? Public Personas, Private Selves, and the Transgression of Authenticity 33 Chapter 2 – “Characterizing” K-Pop Idols: Alternate Universe Fanfiction and the K-Pop Concept 56 Chapter 3 – Believing in the Unusual: Slash Fanfiction and Homoerotic Fan Service 75 Conclusion 94 Works Cited 99 2 Abstract RPF, or “real person fiction,” is a genre of fanfiction that writes about real people rather than fictional characters. Over the past decade, the number of RPF works written about K-pop idols has steadily increased, but RPF remains a controversial practice even within fanfiction communities. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the influence of fictional media practices such as fanfiction in the construction of the celebrity text. This thesis compares three practices found in K-pop RPF to three practices found in the K-pop industry in order to argue that K-pop fanfiction writers and the K-pop industry perform similar practices in pursuit of broader fan desires. Ultimately, the K-pop idol embodies a new model of celebrity that consciously moves between the “public” and the “private” in order to generate affective value. This movement is grounded in images of the idol’s physical body and given meaning through the idol group’s network of interpersonal relationships.
