The Belgian Food & Drink sector shows strong growth compared to other countries and industries. Between 2000 and 2010, the sector grew 47 % in terms of total turnover, which is significantly more than other industrial sectors. The Belgian food industry also grew faster compared to neighbouring countries like and .

Exports of Belgian food represent a significant part of that growth. Since 2002, export increased with an average of 5 % per year. In 2012, export represented 52,1 % of total turnover, i.e. € 24,3 billion.

As a result of that growth, employment in the food industry remained firm, and even increased despite the downward trend in employment experienced by other manufacturing industries. The Belgian food industry provides over 120.000 jobs.
