(Sunday, May 16, 2021) – Several locally based contenders from the recent $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I) returned to the Churchill Downs work tab Saturday and Sunday. Trainer Brad Cox was not represented in this year’s Preakness Stakes (GI) but his Derby duo of Godolphin’s Essential Quality and Juddmonte’s Mandaloun both recorded easy half-mile moves early Saturday morning. Essential Quality worked in :50.80 while Mandaloun breezed in :48.20. Cox and Godolphin reported following the Derby that Essential Quality would be considered for the third jewel of racing’s Triple Crown, the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (GI). A next race option for Mandaloun is still to be announced. Another Derby runner that recorded a Saturday work was D J Stable’s $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (GII) winner Helium, who cruised an easy half-mile in :48.80. Trainer Mark Casse’s local assistant David Carroll reported the colt could target the $150,000 Matt Winn (GIII) on May 29 at Churchill Downs. One of the few horses to close significant ground into the pace of the Kentucky Derby was Bernard Racing, Tagg Team Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds and Terry Stephens’ O Besos. The Orb colt worked a half-mile in :49.20 Saturday with jockey Marcelino Pedroza in the saddle. Trainer Greg Foley reported several options are being considered for the 3-year-old but a decision has not been made final.

Kentucky Derby Comments By Brock Sheridan Photos by Coady and Chelsea Durand #1 Known Agenda, 6-1 Drawing the inside post is his biggest problem. He won the Curlin Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park in his last start, and an allowance race, also at Gulfstream, before that on Feb. 26 and is trained by two-time Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher (Always Dreaming, 2017 and Super Saver, 2010). The Florida Derby has produced more Ken- tucky Derby winners than any other prep race (24) and six Kentucky Derby winners since 2000. Third in the Rem- sen (G2) won by Brooklyn Strong at Aqueduct on Dec. 5 and fifth in the Sam Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 6, Known Agenda looks to be a “getting good at the right time” horse with the addition of blinkers for his last two races. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is a plus, even among the world’s best and post one. Known Agenda #2 Like the King, 50-1 Won the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park in his last race and his first career victory was on turf, so rac- ing on dirt for him is a question mark. In two starts on dirt, he was second in his career debut in July and third against allowance horses at Keeneland in October. Although this is the first Derby starter for trainer Wesley Ward, he has a reputation for his horses performing well on a world stage. Like the King #3 Brooklyn Strong, 50-1 Was the last to qualify for the Kentucky Derby as he made the field over the weekend when others were with- drawn.

1/ST BET // WAGER GUIDE KENTUCKY DERBY MAY01/2021 CHURCHILL DOWNS MEET THE 2021 DERBY CONTENDERS By Johnny D., @XBJohnnyD ESSENTIAL QUALITY: Unbeaten in five career starts, this son of Tapit is the defending Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and reigning 2-year-old champ. He’s also the current consensus pick as top 3-year-old. This Brad Cox-trained colt has done everything right in two 2021 starts. He romped home in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park and then out-fought a game, pace scenario- aided Highly Motivated at Keeneland to win the Grade 2 Blue Grass by a neck. He races a bit off the pace early, but can quickly reach contention when prompted. He has won by as much as four and one-quarter lengths and by as little as a neck. Last September, he broke his maiden first time out going six furlongs at Churchill Downs, so you know he likes the track. Jockey Luis Saez seeks redemption aboard this colt for the disappointment and criticism the rider endured following the disqualification of his mount Maximum Security from first to 17th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. Trainer Brad Cox won last season’s Eclipse Award as the nation’s top trainer. HOT ROD CHARLIE: Ever since stretching out to two turns on the main track and adding blinkers, this son of Preakness winner Oxbow has been a tiger. His first race under those particular circumstances came in the fourth start of his career and resulted in a one-mile maiden score at Santa Anita in October.

AFTERMATH MIKE McCarthy trainer So wonderful to see a HUMBLE trainer!! Took out his trainers license in 2006, went out on his own in 2014, a protege of Todd Pletcher (who was a protege of D Wayne Lucas), He trained CITY OF LIGHT to win the Pegasus Invitational G1 SW Ce Ce G2 SW Smooth Like Strait Indiana Derby winner Axelrod Pat Day Mile winner Rushie Gamely winner Illuminant Kilroe Mile winner Ohio and now, this early in his training career, has won the Preakness w/a 25-1 colt. And, NO, I would have never picked him! Good race by Medina Spirit, regardless of all the crap going on around him. The Japanese horse was nothing but an annoyance! 1-Rombauer / 1:53,62 2-Midnight Bourbon 3- Medina Spirit 4-Keepmeinmind 5-Crowded Trade 6-Unbridled Honor 7-Frace Go De Ina 8-Risk Taking 9-Concert Tour 10-Ram I think it is safe to say that this will go down as a very mediocre field. Not quite as bad as 2017 (Cloud Computing), but .... The horse that I think looked the best in the post parade was Midnight Bourbon. He seems to have blossomed since the Ky Derby. Maybe we'll see him and the winner back for the Belmont but as for the others, I think they'll seek softer competition. So disappointed in my own Risk Taking. Guess the Wood Memorial finish should have been taken seriously. As for Concert Tour, even Mike Smith couldn't rouse him. Had read somewhere that he wasn't working well anyway....so, I'm guessing it's back to CA for him.

The victory gave trainer Bob Baffert his record seventh Kentucky Derby victory and rider John Velazquez his fourth. Baffert broke a tie with Ben Jones for most Derby victories with Saturday’s triumph. His previous wins came with Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998), War Emblem (2002), Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (2015), Triple Crown winner Justify (2018) and Authentic (2020). Velazquez, who won last year on Authentic had previous wins on Always Dreaming (2017) and Animal Kingdom (2011). Velazquez became the eighth rider to win the Kentucky Oaks and Derby in the same year having piloted Malathaat to victory Friday. The most recent rider to do that was Calvin Borel in 2009. Medina Spirit broke sharply from the gate but favored Essential Quality and second choice Rock Your World bumped shortly after the start eliminating some pace pressure from Velazquez. Medina Spirit led the field through fractions of :23.09, :46.70 and 1:11.21 while under mild pressure from Soup and Sandwich with Mandaloun tracking in third. Approaching the far turn, Hot Rod Charlie began an advance along the rail while Essential Quality mounted a bid four wide.
