News Release _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Kevin Kerstein Publicity Manager Churchill Downs Racetrack (610) 420-6971 (mobile) (502) 635-4712 (office) [email protected] KENTUCKY DERBY 147 RUNNERS RETURN TO TRAINING LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sunday, May 16, 2021) – Several locally based contenders from the recent $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I) returned to the Churchill Downs work tab Saturday and Sunday. Trainer Brad Cox was not represented in this year’s Preakness Stakes (GI) but his Derby duo of Godolphin’s Essential Quality and Juddmonte’s Mandaloun both recorded easy half-mile moves early Saturday morning. Essential Quality worked in :50.80 while Mandaloun breezed in :48.20. Cox and Godolphin reported following the Derby that Essential Quality would be considered for the third jewel of racing’s Triple Crown, the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (GI). A next race option for Mandaloun is still to be announced. Another Derby runner that recorded a Saturday work was D J Stable’s $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (GII) winner Helium, who cruised an easy half-mile in :48.80. Trainer Mark Casse’s local assistant David Carroll reported the colt could target the $150,000 Matt Winn (GIII) on May 29 at Churchill Downs. One of the few horses to close significant ground into the pace of the Kentucky Derby was Bernard Racing, Tagg Team Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds and Terry Stephens’ O Besos. The Orb colt worked a half-mile in :49.20 Saturday with jockey Marcelino Pedroza in the saddle. Trainer Greg Foley reported several options are being considered for the 3-year-old but a decision has not been made final. -
Grade Ii Louisiana Derby Jumps to $750000
GRADE II LOUISIANA DERBY JUMPS TO $750,000 AND WILL BE RUN AT 1 1/8 MILES ON MARCH 27 BIG EVENT SCHEDULE CHANGES & TWO NEW RACES FOR FILLIES & MARES HIGHLIGHT FAIR GROUNDS’ RECORD $7.24 MILLION, 66-RACE STAKES MENU NEW ORLEANS, LA (Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009) – Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots has raised the purse of the Grade II Louisiana Derby to $750,000, increased the distance to 1 1/8 miles and moved the 3-year-old fixture to Saturday, March 27 – five weeks prior to the Kentucky Derby. The significant changes to its signature race and accompanying races, as well as the addition of two new dirt races for fillies and mares, highlight a record $7.24 million, 66-race stakes schedule for the 2009-2010 Fair Grounds meet. The 85-day Fair Grounds meet will have its earliest start date ever when the historic New Orleans racetrack opens on Friday, Nov. 6, a week earlier than last year and well ahead of the old Thanksgiving Day opener of years past. Closing day for the action-packed 21-week season will be Sunday, March 28. In recent years, the Louisiana Derby, which produced Kentucky Derby winners Black Gold (1924) and Grindstone (1996), had been a $600,000 race over 1 1/16 miles and was carded seven weeks prior to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands. The momentous switch of the 97th Louisiana Derby to closing weekend, along with moving the Grade II, $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks to headline a stakes quartet for fillies and mares on Friday, March 26, has altered both series of races. -

News Release _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Kevin Kerstein Publicity Manager Churchill Downs Racetrack (610) 420-6971 (mobile) (502) 635-4712 (office) [email protected] ‘WE’VE FOUND OUR WAY HOME’: HARDIN BROTHERS BRING PASSION OF HORSE RACING TO CHURCHILL DOWNS STABLE GATE LOUISVILLE, KY (Sunday, May 23, 2021) – Donnie and Ken Hardin are hard to miss when backside employees enter the Churchill Downs Stable Gate each morning. The brothers, who work on the security team, bring their passion of horse racing and the spirit of their father with them to each shift at Churchill Downs. “Churchill Downs stands for everything I love,” Ken simply stated. The Hardin’s faces light up every time a new horse racing star enters the stable gate or when they get the opportunity to tell a story about horses that strike up memories of their father. The Stable Gate office is filled with horse racing memorabilia and different photos where all of the employees, not just the Hardins, can share personal stories. One specific photo of Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day brings back memories of the Hardins’ late father, Charles, every time they enter the office. “I was about 14-years-old when Pat Day won the (1992) Kentucky Derby (aboard Lil E Tee) but I remember it well,” Donnie said. “My dad was taken back by the legendary jockey’s humble demeanor after his big accomplishment. I learned a lot from that. “The next spring Churchill Downs had an autograph session featuring Pat Day. At the time, I collected sports trading cards, including jockey cards. -
