Nobody—because of his white page. I didn’t even for $35,000 to current owner Amr Zedan’s Zedan Racing Stables know who Protonico was so I had to look him up. I was actually after the colt had worked three furlongs in :33 flat at the under DERBY SPIRIT tack session. See on page 7 Medina Spirit is from the first crop of the sire Protonico out of Mongolian Changa, by the Florida-bred sire Brilliant Speed. Medina Spirit is the first foal out of Mongolian Changa, who won a maiden special weight at Presque Isle Downs in 2016 with earn- ings of $25,970 and she was bred to Rivers Run Deep in 2020. But I had to pair down my horses. I’m just a small breeder. I lost money on him. I had to pay the stud fee. I had to pay the vet. I had to pay the commission. I did well at the sale because of others, but I thought because Medina Spirit was so good looking surely somebody would pay $10,000 for him.” Christy Whitman put in the only bid on Medina Spirit at the Winter Mixed Sale and she said she chose him on looks alone when she spotted him in the walking area in the back of OBS just before Medina Spirit entered the ring. “I was the only person who bid on this horse,” Whitman said of the 2019 purchase. “When I buy horses I sit in the back room and see every horse that goes by and I pick them out. I just don’t have the kind of money to buy the big dollar horses. “This colt came up and he’s really good looking. I opened him up at $1,000 and I was the only one to bid on him. “So I took him to the farm and [Gallego] took care of him and he was always a beautiful mover, really good, really professional. “Because of his purchase price and his light pedigree page, we couldn’t get him in any of the earlier 2-year-old sales at OBS,” Whitman continued. “So that’s how he wound up in the Open sale and because of the pandemic, that was even pushed back to July. But he worked a wonderful three-eighths and had a really good video and a $35,000 price on a $1,000 yearling is a pretty good turn around. We were happy and it was great that he went to Bob [Baffert], although I didn’t know he went to Baffert until after his first start at Los Alamitos. He keeps surprising people, even Baffert.” Zedan spoke of how he acquired Medina Spirit in at the OBS July Sale during a fluke series of events from Ocala to his home in Saudi Arabia. “Mr. Aboughazale, who is a dear friend…owns Protonico,” Zedan said. “We were done shopping per se during the [2020 OBS July Sale] and [Aboughazale calls me] and says there’s this horse by Protonico and would [I] want to check him out? So I checked him out and I liked him.” Zedan then called bloodstock agent Gary Young for his opinion and he suggested they consult Baffert. (Sunday, May 16, 2021) – Several locally based contenders from the recent $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I) returned to the Churchill Downs work tab Saturday and Sunday. Trainer Brad Cox was not represented in this year’s Preakness Stakes (GI) but his Derby duo of Godolphin’s Essential Quality and Juddmonte’s Mandaloun both recorded easy half-mile moves early Saturday morning. Essential Quality worked in :50.80 while Mandaloun breezed in :48.20. Cox and Godolphin reported following the Derby that Essential Quality would be considered for the third jewel of racing’s Triple Crown, the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes (GI). A next race option for Mandaloun is still to be announced. Another Derby runner that recorded a Saturday work was D J Stable’s $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (GII) winner Helium, who cruised an easy half-mile in :48.80. Trainer Mark Casse’s local assistant David Carroll reported the colt could target the $150,000 Matt Winn (GIII) on May 29 at Churchill Downs. One of the few horses to close significant ground into the pace of the Kentucky Derby was Bernard Racing, Tagg Team Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds and Terry Stephens’ O Besos. The Orb colt worked a half-mile in :49.20 Saturday with jockey Marcelino Pedroza in the saddle. Trainer Greg Foley reported several options are being considered for the 3-year-old but a decision has not been made final.

Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.
