We both volunteered to help on race committee for the Lido 14 Nationals and we were really glad we did. The Lido Sfleets were extremely competitive and it was fun racing to watch. ABYC faired very well in the competition. Congratulations to: Mark Ryan and his sister Sarah Schaupeter for winning the Lido 14 championship (their 2nd time); Kathy Reed and Cindy Heavrin for winning the Lido 14 Women’s championship (their 2nd time); and Sawyer Gibbs and Hailey Thompson for winning the Lido 14 Junior championship. Many thanks to Amanda Wayne, Jon Gresham and Bruce Golison for organizing such a great event. Also, great job done by the race committee which included PRO Martyn Bookwalter, his girlfriend Micheko, Mark Townsend, Steve Kuritz, Gordy Palmer, Robin Townsend, Ed Spotskey, Mike Baumann and Steve Potter. Thank you Dana Bell for decorating for the Saturday night party. I loved the pine trees. Even the band had such a good time they asked about joining the club. Last, but not least, thank you to all the Fleet 6 members that volunteered their time during the event. The New Member Appreciation Mixer was one of the best appreciation parties that we’ve ever had. Thank you Dana Bell and Cindy Heavrin! The mixer was a fun creative evening, the food fabulous and the build a boat game a lot of fun! Our table tried to build a foiling catamaran with a “modern” bulb keel (Cal 20 style) but were disqualified for using tootsie rolls as ballast. We were very impressed with all the entries and were amazied that most of them were able to sail across the pool. The dinner spread was one of the best I’ve ever seen at ABYC. We had crab legs, mussels, clams, salmon, chicken, corn on the cob and several delicious salads. I think there was dessert, but I was too full to even taste it! The following weekend, we were able to get away on the Catalina Cruise. Although we cheated and took the fast ferry boat from San Pedro to Two Harbors, we still had a great day. We arrived at the island early and had breakfast at Doug’s Reef (no buffalo milk at that time of day) and had enough time to walk over and see Cat Harbor before our fellow club members starting coming ashore. We met up with Chris and Don Taugher, Marilyn and Mike McMahon, the McCormick clan and we headed off to pay Frisbee golf (something I’d never done before). We were joined by Kathy Reed and Cindy Heavrin and Yon Carpenter and his daughter Julia. Yon gave us all tips on how to improve our game (which did improve slightly). I think my final score was double the amount of par. After golf, we headed to Kathy and Cindy’s boat for a beer and rest before the cocktail party on Tom Ramsey’s beautiful boat Encore. Darlene outdid us all with her amazing array of tasty appetizers. According to Tom, we ate everything along with an amazing amount of beer, wine and mixed drinks. Steve and I headed home that evening on the ferry, but I understand the rest of the cruise was fantastic. Thank you Yon Carpenter and Pat McCormick for organizing such a fun event. The presentation at this month’s General Membership Meeting was by Tony Burcia (of Tony’s Boat Shop fame) about his five year journey from Yugoslavia to Newport Beach. Thank you Bill and Sue McDannel for finding such an interesting speaker. Tony has written a book “Seeking Freedom: A Five-Year Odyssey”. The finale of this year’s BBQ Series was on August 23. We had a strong fleet of Lido 14s and a Portsmouth fleet consisting of Sabots and Lasers. Congratulations to Bill Moore and Derek Buczynski (Lido fleet) and, my Dad, John Ellis (Portsmouth) for winning the BBQ marinade and pepper grinders. The BBQ was the highlight of the event. Everyone brought meat to BBQ, salads, desserts and wine to share. The Ukulele group practiced around the fire pit. What’s next? Please mark your calendars for the Annual General Membership meeting on Friday September 19. It’s time to elect new Directors and Trustees, so please take the time to come down and vote. At that meeting, we will review the club’s financial condition and talk about the year in review. Also, coming up is the Commodore’s Appreciation Party on Friday, September 26. Please be there so Steve and I can thank everyone for volunteering this year! It will be a wine tasting dinner, so please be sure to make a reservation with the office or on the website. Jennifer Kuritz viceKathy Robinsonverses photo I want to thank all of the yard members that have been looking after their boats and keeping the yard clean and free of debris and other things. It is not an easy task to keep our HUGE yard clean and organized. With that said, on my weekly audit/walk around I had noticed a few boats that are in the yard that do not belong in the spot that they are occupying. I know that there must be a good reason or “arrangement” as to why, but all we ask is that we know about it. Come to the office and let Sheila know your plans or call/email me and we will work with you-but please don’t just “roll in” we will find you! Have you noticed the new industrial hose and reel at the hoist? This is a trial hose that we feel will withstand the elements, the members and the test of time. If you have not seen the nozzle, go check it out…you will be impressed! However, please don’t waste water, as you all ...continued next page sou’wester • september 2014 • page 2 morevice commodore ...from page 2 know we are in a major drought and this hose will dump water faster than a lido without a stern plug! The plan will be to put two more hose reels toward the small hoist, so keep an eye out for those. The new Laser rack is in work and we are hoping to have it completed in about a month. We have a team assembled and we are just waiting for the new material to be delivered so we can start putting it together. We will net 20 new laser spots, so stay tuned if you are on the waiting list, and be patient during this process. Our next big regatta is the Viper 640 North Americans. The entry list is quite extensive with 45 entries, and Kim K and Kanye West are on the crew list so this will be a party! If you are not sailing come on down and see what regatta chair Tim Carter has in store, this will be a great event so get involved…it is fun! Following the Vipers we have Etchells fleet racing, and the world famous 28th Charity Regatta hosted by Yacht Clubs of Long Beach- with special meaning to the Van Dyke Family and Norma Clapp; this is a great cause and event. Our annual elections are right around the corner and I want to personally thank the members that have stepped forward to give back to the best yacht club on Planet Earth, Got Sails? and in no particular order: Latham Bell (incumbent), Jeff McDermaid (incumbent), Kevin Brown, Joel Stone, Yon The Juniors are Carpenter, Steve George, Dan Gilboa, David Schack, Gabriel collecting old Ferromola and Tim Carter.
