Welcome to SCYA’s 2019 Race Calendar. This publication contains the individual regattas and series hosted by the SCYA’s member clubs and organizations from Central California to Baja Norte Mexico, Nevada and Arizona, both coastal and inland. I want to especially thank our sponsors who help defray the expense of developing this tool, the volunteers that put out a lot of effort collecting the information and copy, and the Harbor Associations who develop the calendars, upon which this consolidated version is largely based. I also want to urge our sailors to get out on the water and join some regattas. I know many skippers are reluctant to enter regattas feeling less than confident about the rules, intimidated by the competition, and thinking their boat isn’t compet- itive. The fact is that everyone starts sometime, there are willing mentors, the basic rules are not that complicated, and handicap formulas even out the boats. So, download this calendar and use it to plan your sailing season. Take time to join regattas outside your home club. And, for those of you not yet belonging to a club, many of these regattas welcome the boating public - a nice way to learn about the host club. One-design racing is an excellent way to hone skills and concentrate on the skipper and crew (often more so than the boat). There are many class associations for a variety of boats, small and inexpensive to large and sophisticated. This edi- tion highlights the popular Harbor 20 one-design daysailer. There is a very active and supportive class association covering both coasts. It is a good example of a well-organized association supporting a strict one-design class that appeals to experts and novices alike. We at SCYA wish each and every skipper and crew a great 2019 season! Let’s have some fun! WELCOME BOATERS FROM THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA YACHTING ASSOCIATION Harbor 20 For the SCYA 2019 Race Calendar, the Harbor 20 is highlighted as a popular one design class born of collaboration among yacht club members and WD Schock, the builder. The objective was to design a low-maintenance day sailor that would be wet-sailed, quick to rig, stable in a blow but responsive in light air and family-friendly. With a fixed keel, jib boom, long cockpit and electric auxiliary, the design met the objectives. The one design rules are strict and enforced so that the competition is one between sailors more than boats. For example, sails must only be replaced at certain class-specified periods and the boats raced with cushions in place (!). Harbor 20 Harbor 20 CONTINUED There are six official Harbor 20 Fleets as recognized by the Class Association: Fleet 1 – Newport Beach, California Fleet 2 – San Diego / Coronado, California Fleet 3 – Hilton Head, South Carolina Fleet 4 – Santa Barbara, California Fleet 5 – Annapolis, Maryland Fleet 6 – Charlotte Harbor, Florida As you can see, there are active fleets on both coasts and the boats are sailed internationally as well. Harbor 20 CONTINUED According to the Harbor 20 Class Association, while the Harbor 20 is a family-friendly de- sign that can be easily single handed, an objective was getting out on the water in competition that was close and skipper-focused. They note the following: • The Harbor 20 is the most actively sailed keelboat in the country. Harbor 20s have more races with more boats sailing than any other keelboat. • Harbor 20s are also the most actively sailed boat at every single club that has a Harbor 20 fleet. • The Harbor 20 has the highest percentage of women skippers of any sailboat in the world. Nearly 30% of race skippers of Harbor 20s are women. • The Harbor 20 has the biggest Corinthian turnout of any keelboat class champs in the country. • The Harbor 20 also has the highest percentage of family teams of any class. Fully 75% of the teams at the last class champs were families. Harbor 20 Harbor 20 CONTINUED While family oriented fleet racing is the mainstay, the Harbor 20 has also proven to be extremely well suited for highly competitive team racing in 2v2, 3v3, and 4v4 formats. Taking the carefully crafted objectives of a group of like-minded sailors, molding that into a design by a talented architect and executing it by a dedicated builder, and coordinating it by an active Association, it’s not hard to see how this design, launched 21 years ago, continues to be popular and active.
