Big thanks to those who have helped us get here!

Meet the Board, cont….

Treasurer – Jean Cutshall How long have you been involved in sailing? Since around 1990, when Bruce took me out for my first sail on our and the mast crashed into the lake. Bruce has sailed all his life. His Mom loved sailing when she lived on Balboa Island.

How were you introduced to sailing? In question above, Bruce took me for a sail on Scott's Flat Lake on a Lido 14 he had just purchased. Unfortunately we did not sail long before the shroud broke. But he persevered, and we had a Catalina 22 on the lake for about 10 years.

What boats have you owned, and currently own? When Bruce and I first met, I had a ski boat. From there we owned a Lido 14 and a Catalina 22 on which we spent many fun days, evenings and weekends on Scott's Flat lake as well as Tahoe, Bullard's Bar, and other nearby lakes. Now we own a which we keep in Marina Village Marina on Alameda. We usually get down to the boat every other weekend.

Are you an inland lake sailor, blue water sailor, or both? We sail around San Francisco Bay. Usually take a couple of weeks every June and sail up to Benicia, Petaluma, Napa and then back to Tiburon where we stay at the Corinthian for a few nights and then to San Francisco Marina for another few nights. We often will sail to another marina for a long weekend. Lately, we have also been taking a week or two in August to sail or enjoy many activities in Alameda or San Francisco. We especially enjoyed the America's Cup World Series. Last year we traveled down to San Diego and watched the races for 3 days. This year in August, we took the ferry to San Francisco and bicycled out to the peninsula at San Francisco Marina where we had front row seats to the races every day for 6 days.

What was your favorite sailing experience? Almost every sail is a fun experience. Bruce and I enjoy our time together on the boat, and enjoy having friends and family sail with us.

Racer, cruiser, or both? I cruise. Bruce races and cruises.

Where are your favorite places to sail? We love to sail to the many marinas and Yacht Clubs on the Bay. Plus we enjoy going to the Wooden Boat Show in Port Townsend almost yearly and our trips to New England, both places where we plan to sail in the future.

What are you looking forward to for GCYC in 2013? A great Regatta and enjoying our many friends in the club.

Cruise Chairman – Seth Schmerzler How long have you been involved in sailing? In a nutshell, my father started me sailing when I was six in Santa Barbara harbor. I started as a deckhand on crewboats and doing commercial fishing when I was about 18 and received my 100 ton ocean operator’s license when I was about 22.

How were you introduced to sailing? I grew up Sailing Sabots, Kites, Snipes, Lasers and ultimately Stars. I sailed with my father as a kid pretty extensively around the Santa Barbara Channel Islands aboard his 55 foot ketch.

What was your favorite sailing experience? During my 2 years service in the Kingdom of Tonga as a Peace Corps volunteer, I had many opportunities to cruise the Tongan archipelago as well as Fiji and Samoa. As a student at UCSB, I did several

Page 5 of 13 …a little dinghy

Meet the Board, cont…. tours of research in of Papua New Guinea. While in transit, visiting Australia one time, I met several sailors and ended up cruising the South pacific for 9 months, mostly aboard a 33 foot, double ended Ferro cement out of Sidney harbor.

After grad school, I worked offshore doing tugs and tow, marine salvage and yacht deliveries. I ended up skippering the harbor cruise and whale watching boats out of Santa Barbara.

What boats have you owned, and currently own? We sold our Columbia 28 in Santa Barbara harbor and moved here in 2001 with my and Cyclone. Since then I have had a 19 foot and a San Juan 23. Last year I got a sports car-like J 24 and love tearing around Scotts Flat.

What are you looking forward to for GCYC in 2013? During the season on weekends, you can pretty much count on me anchoring up and BBQing in some cove on the lake after a super fun afternoon sail. Hope to see there!

Publicity/Membership – Teresa Gaman How long have you been involved in sailing? Since Dudley and I met 41 years ago.

How were you introduced to sailing? Dudley and I started out rowing our dinghy out of Redwood City Harbor and into the Bay. We'd row up a bit and then sailed back down by wrapping our Indian bedspread around an oar, therefore, making a sail. The other oar was used as a rudder.

What boats have you owned, and currently own? We owned a 1974 , named "Treefort", owned from 8/83 through 7/92, in a partnership with a friend. We sold Treefort to sailing friends (Cybercruisers) in 1992. We owned a 1979 named "Invictus", owned from 7/92 through 12/00. We now own a 1990 named "Kia Orana", which we bought in 2000. She's berthed at South Beach Harbor next to the ballpark. We also have a lake boat that we bought from Hugh & Nicki. She is a 1987 Capri 18 named "Blown Away". Loved this boat from the moment I saw her!

Are you an inland lake sailor, blue water sailor, or both? Both

What was your favorite sailing experience? I have so many favorite sailing experiences. It would be impossible to talk about only one. However, I did have an incredible experience sailing on a friend's boat in the Coastal Cup years ago. One night, when it was dead calm, the moon was shining down on the water. Four Humpback whales joined us for 1/2 an hour and put on a spectacular show. Their blows fell on our faces as these 40-foot whales skimmed the sides of our boat. They did spy hops at the bow and at the stern. Quite exciting! That's just one story of so many. I could go on and on, like when we got caught in 45-knot winds and 20-foot seas on our way to the Channel Islands. THAT was a memorable experience. Dudley did a fantastic job saving our lives. That trip helped me trust our Kia Orana too. She bounced back up after every knock down!

Racer, cruiser, or both? Cruiser, but I like beer can racing.

Where are your favorite places to sail? Out the Gate and harbor hopping down the coast of California, harbor hopping the Bay, and Scotts Flat Lake!

What are you looking forward to for GCYC in 2013? Fun parties, lots of sailing, and new members. Love getting the Club together -- it's always fun.

Page 6 of 13 …a little dinghy

Meet the Board, cont…. Port Captain – Bryant Cockcroft How long have you been involved in sailing? I have been involved in sailing off and on for over 20 years

How were you introduced to sailing? I was introduced to real sail boats in 1983 on a Santa Cruz 27 on Lake Tahoe.

What boats have you owned, and currently own? I have owned about 20 boats starting with a 10’ row boat with 2 hp outboard at the age of 7, to a 53’ motor yacht with 3 staterooms and 2 heads, also a 30’ offshore go fast boat. I am currently a 3 boat owner; a 21’ ski boat, a 25’ classic offshore twin, and a Catalina 22 sale pending.

Are you an inland lake sailor, blue water sailor, or both? Most of my sailing has been on lakes. I did race in club races for two years and hope to race this year.

What was your favorite sailing experience? I did like last year’s regatta race. It was nice wind. I will be also be cruising out of town this year with a new sailboat that I am looking for now.

What are you looking forward to for GCYC in 2013? I have signed up for a 7 day sailing school in San Juan Islands this April to get ASA certification 104, bareboat charter.

Race Chairman - Jerry Lewis How long have you been involved in sailing? I taught myself to sail my freshman year in high school after I built a 16' sailboat - using conduit for mast and spars and sheets and tarps for sails. It was fashioned along the lines of a Sunfish with the lateen rig. While away at college five years later, a hurricane took it away from the shore where it was docked.

How were you introduced to sailing? Everyone else in my area growing up on Core Sound, near Cape Lookout on the NC outer banks, was into fast power boats. I drove a hydroplane over 90 mph before I could drive a car (14 years old). But somehow I got the bug to sail and built my own boat and taught myself to sail it. Had to use an encyclopedia from the high school to learn a few things about making it go into the wind!

What boats have you owned, and currently own? 1. Homemade sunfish type 16' 2. Capri Omega 14' 3. Share of a Catalina 22 (Knotty Lady) 4. MacGregor 25 (QuarterMac) 5. (un-named) - currently in Huntington Beach with son Cameron 6. (Kudzu) - current

Are you an inland lake sailor, blue water sailor, or both? Mostly inland lakes, used to sail coastal on the east coast of N.C.

What was your favorite sailing experience? Favorite while racing: Winning a race at Whiskeytown by 0.5 second due to tacking to cover onto Starboard right at the finish line!

Favorite while cruising: watching a huge red sun set in the west (about 20 years ago) while anchored at Mandeville Tip in the delta (offshore Mr. Hilton's vacation home) on the fourth of July and a huge full moon

Page 7 of 13 …a little dinghy

Meet the Board, cont…. rising to the east as the fireworks started - with about 1,000 other boats. It was an awesome sight - not too often do the sun set and the moon rise within minutes of each other!

Racer, cruiser, or both? Racer!

Where are your favorite places to sail? SFL, Huntington Lake, Konocti, Whiskeytown

What are you looking forward to for GCYC in 2013? A racing season with more participants - c'mon out and play with us!

Newsletter Editor – Rick Paulson How long have you been involved in sailing? My first sailing experience was on San Francisco Bay in the mid-1990’s crewing for former city councilman John Jacobsen racing his Catalina 30 out of the St. Francis Yacht Club.

How were you introduced to sailing? Having learned to when I was still in high school, I was always interested in sailing. I guess the connection there is use of the wind and “nautical” miles. When my brother-in-law invited me to crew, racing on the Bay, I jumped at the opportunity.

What boats have you owned, and currently own? We have an International 470 that I restored after it had been neglected, left out in the weather for many years. Just late last summer we bought a Catalina 22, Oski, having spent her previous life on Lake Tahoe with the same owner since 1978.

Are you an inland lake sailor blue water sailor, or both? Mostly inland lakes, but we enjoy sailing on the Bay with our GCYC friends who have boats there.

What was your favorite sailing experience? It was a blast taking my kids out on Huntington Lake in the 470, after spending the winter rebuilding the centerboard and transom.

Racer, cruiser, or both? Both, although most of my experience has been racing, I’m looking forward to getting more blue-water miles.

Where are your favorite places to sail? SFL, Huntington Lake, and Whiskeytown Reservoir!

What are you looking forward to for GCYC in 2013? Getting Oski out on SFL with Sherry (after I install cup holders for her).

Sailing Education – Ransom Burford How long have you been involved in sailing? I started sailing 14 years ago.

How were you introduced to sailing? A close friend of mine dragged me along with him to his junior sailing program. I still remember the day, the program was taught on a Pearson Ariel with 4 other juniors on the beautiful waters of Lake Tahoe. We motored out of the Marina and spent the next two hours bobbing like a buoy because there was not one lick of wind! It was a remarkably dull beginning to what would become my greatest passion.

Page 8 of 13 …a little dinghy

Meet the Board, cont….

What boats have you owned, and currently own? My ownership is fairly limited. I have owned a Hobie 16, Capri Omega, and now a Lido 14. I am also in the market for a keelboat, most likely a Catalina 22 or a Santana 20. Despite my limited ownership, I have crewed or captained 42 different boats, 38 of them while racing. I never turn down a chance to go out sailing.

Are you an inland lake sailor, blue water sailor, or both? Inland sailor by experience. Blue water by heart. I started sailing in Tahoe, then San Francisco Bay, now I am growing into to local lakes but I have always dreamed of racing offshore. In fact, I hope to compete in the single handed Transpac one day.

What was your favorite sailing experience? All of them! It takes very little prompting to get me to share sea stories. If I started talking about all my favorites, this interview would take days.

Racer, cruiser, or both? Racer! I am a terrible cruiser. I am constantly trimming for max speed and looking for ways to make the boat go faster. Experience has taught me that guests do not enjoy drinking their wine while hard on the rail!

Where are your favorite places to sail? That is a tough one. I like the feel of the marinas in the bay. There is something about the salty air, the tang of seaweed, and the distant clang of rigging that you can only find in a coastal harbor. I guess my favorite sailing venue is Lake Tahoe. Every time I sail up there it is like spending time with an old friend. Every place is different though and I have yet to find somewhere I do not like.

What are you looking forward to for GCYC in 2013? I am excited to start teaching young sailors again. There are some exciting plans in the works and I am looking forward to being a part of such a fun and rewarding program.

Membership and Publicity Report

All hands,

I would like to thank Melinda for serving 3 years as the Membership/Publicity person. She did a fantastic job, and I hope to successfully follow in her footsteps and see where it takes me. I will continue to work closely with her as I learn the position.

I'm looking forward to working with everyone and making new friends.

Speaking of new friends, we have new members:

Bill and Judee McWood from Nevada City. They'd like to retire and when they're not sailing, they're listening to live rock 'n roll music. They discovered GCYC after recently moving to our area. We hope to meet them some day at one of our meetings.

See you at the next general meeting on February 13th!
