Morning Racing Class, KYC Juniors 3 JUNIOR SAILING DIRECTOR Jesse Andrews

With 55 students total this fall in two adult sailing classes and five junior sailing classes we are having our best fall sailing turnout in years! Thank you goes out to the instructors and especially Dave Brown who has volunteered his boat and personal time to teach a keelboat class on Saturdays. Andy Bates also volunteered time to run the Friday night races all year and the kids all really enjoyed that series as well as winning the infamous bar tickies! We held the last two HYSA regatta's of the year at Friday Night Races KYC with over 30 participants on 10/19 and 10/20. We had lots of parent volunteers who made this event possible. KYC's 10 sailors did very well in the 10 to 15 knot trade winds. We took home the top four overall El Toro places and the top two in Bics. On Sunday for HYSA #8 Makani Kai sponsored the event. The wind was much lighter and most KYC kids ended up sailing Bics. They placed 1-7 overall in the Bic fleet showing that all that practice paid off for the last HYSA of the year! The O'Pen Bic class, now called the O'Pen Skiff after a ownership change, has also proven to be very popular at KYC as well as around the island. There are now over 60 boats on the island with the largest fleet at Kiley Freitas Makani Andrews HKBC. Waikiki and Hawaii Yacht Club have purchased fleets and now Pearl Harbor has just put in a purchase. The boats are inexpensive, easy to maintain and fun! Perfect for kids 130lbs and under. We have been getting 10-12 boats out in the Friday afternoon and Saturday Morning Bic racing classes. They are also used in the intermediate classes on Saturdays. With a solid core group of kids racing out of KYC they have taken the top ten spots in the first year of Bic seasons points in 2019. The kids also did very well in other classes this year with Morgan Vodzak winning Seasons Points for El Toro A, Sage and Makani Andrews winning El Toro B and C and Mani Pahuatini winning El Toro C-2. Kanoa Pick Mani Pahuatini Michael Kai Hochart and Torik Stokka and Max Roth's season in A came down to the last race of the last regatta of the year. They ended up tied for the year with Max winning they tie-breaker. In Laser B division Gavin Ball placed first, Zach Severson took second and Olivia Lowthian took third. These awards will be given out at the HYRA banquet on November 9 at Waikiki Yacht club. Don't forget to come support junior sailing at this years Sea Fest at WYC on November 2. There are lots of auction items, games and fun to be had while supporting the junior sailors in Hawaii that are travelling to events on the mainland this upcoming year. See the attached flyer for more info. Morgan Makani Our next event that we are travelling to is the New Zealand O'Pen Skiff Nationals over Christmas break. Last year we had 9 kids go to the Worlds in New Zealand. We made many friends who invited us back again this year for their big event in Napier in early January. So far KYC has 8 kids signed up for this event and 8 so far for the O'Pen Skiff World champs which are in Sardinia in July.

The morning of October 6, 2019 dawned in spectacular fashion. As the sun rose over Kaneohe Bay ahead of the scheduled 2019 J80 State Championship Regatta, the conditions were revealed to be…still. -like, reflecting the clear blue sky and adjacent landforms with exceptional clarity.

Team Alohalani 2019 J80 State Champions Cathy Pratt, Craig Brown, Fuzz Foster, Jeff Remily As results were announced, the “Admiral Soiland Cup” (established in 1926 and rededicated in 2015 as the J80 Hawaii State Championship trophy) was filled to the brim (twice) with Margaritas and shared with all the competitors and race committee (of legal drinking age). A toast to spirited one design competition and friendly foes.

(Photo - Dawn of 2019 J80 State Championships)

Undaunted, the fleet of four J80s including Crusader, Papio, Rakali, and Alohalani sailed out onto the battlefield to give it a shot. Earlier, at the Skipper’s Meeting, the PRO Andrew Meade was steadfast, “If we cancel it, we cancel it out there”. Andrew’s foresight was rewarded. The J80 fleet was able to sail five races in light but semi-consistent conditions. A big mahalo to Andrew Meade and his race committee for working with the conditions, adjusting the courses, and getting the regatta completed. With winds less than 8 knots, shifting from the north to northeast and back, the racing was challenging and required concentration. One missed shift would result in a first to last position swap at the next mark. The boats kept moving, but there were shifting areas of pressure and those that stayed in the pressure were rewarded.

Mahalo Race Committee - Craig Schifferns, Andrew Meade, Katie Cruise, Jenny Guzik, Jeff Cruise

Alohalani, skippered by Jeff Remily, won the 2019 J80 Hawaii State Championship with four bullets and a second-place finish. This was Jeff’s first J80 Hawaii State Championship victory. When asked how he did so well, Jeff said, “The crew work by Cathy Pratt, Craig Brown, and Fuzz Foster was flawless. Fuzz kept us in the pressure and in the clear all day.” The podium was rounded out by Bob Stephenson skippering Crusader in second place and Pete Stokka at the helm of Papio in third place. Bob Stephenson is a three-time Hawaii State J80 Champion.

8 9 2019 J24 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA RECAP by Mike Scott

October 5, 2019 was the annual Hawaii J24 State Championships this year on Kaneohe Bay. The Race Committee this year was run by Fred Berg and Mike Bacon. They did a great job setting a fair line and course, which made for some exciting racing. The J24 fleet sailed in the center of the bay, with the windward mark slightly southwest of A mark due to the shifty winds. The leeward mark was set near F buoy. Wind speeds were 6-12 knots with occasional 15 knot gusts. The J24 fleet was smaller this year with a total of 4 boats on the line. The racing this day was so tight the top 3 boats were always trading places from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd if one missed a shift or made a boat handling error. A total of five races were completed and there was clean racing all day with no protests by anyone in the J24 fleet. In all it was a really fun day of one design sailing, I encourage all other J24 teams to come out next year for the States.
