Junior El Toro Program

Buster Long and I have taken the helm of the El Toro Junior Sailing Program at Pinto Lake. We have seen many miles of water go by while checking off the priorities set during a transition meeting with the previ- ous team May 1st. This was a brain-storming meeting to determine what they had discovered from their teaching experiences on the lake and what they would like to see accomplished going forward. This was a huge undertaking, but with a little luck and some hard work by the core team, we now have an 8’ x 12 floating island on Pinto Lake. The kids named it the “Oasis”. This is a critical tool that will assist the instructors in teaching proper docking techniques. This dock is uniquely designed so that the 12’ right angle is always tethering into the true wind. This allows learning consistency when landing. Using the three boat length leeward rule, we should see improved boat handling skills in close quarters and minimize potential damage to our dear fleet. 9 October 2011 Santa Cruz Yacht Club Spinnaker
