It provides a close look at Israeli society, in which people face daily conflicts. These include confrontations on many levels: the national, such as wars and terror attacks; the social, such as ethnic, religious and economic tensions; and the personal level, whereby the number of lawyers and legal claims per capita are among the highest in the world. The magnitude, pervasiveness, and often existential nature of these conflicts have led sociologists to label Israel a ‘conflict society’. -

Men were entrusted by God to worship Him and women were men’s helpers in the dissemination of the message, although usually their role was restricted to hearth and home. In modern times women began to share men’s roles in every aspect of life, in religion, in politics and in society. In fact, women in some cases have pushed men out of some of the latter’s former roles in life. The afore-mentioned facts are also applicable to Judaism, whose founding prophet Moses was a man. Jewish women obeyed the ritual law because of the men. However, as just noted, their role was purely domestic. However, they began to rebel in every domain, including that of religion, even after they immigrated to Israel. The Jewish religion played an important role in defining the place of women in every aspect of Jewish life, whether in politics, society, religion or any other. Their role at first was marginal, in fact practically non-existent, at the birth of modern Hebrew literature and the emergence of the Zionist movement. -

I had often wondered what the background of that street name was. Many streets in Israel are named for famous people in Jewish and Israeli history: Einstein, Weitzman, Ben Gurion… There are also street names from nature: trees, flowers, mountains… But this name sounded almost Biblical in its reference. -
Judah David Eisenstein and the First Hebrew Encyclopedia
1 Abstract When an American Jew Produced: Judah David Eisenstein and the First Hebrew Encyclopedia Between 1907 and 1913, Judah David Eisenstein (1854–1956), an amateur scholar and entrepreneurial immigrant to New York City, produced the first modern Hebrew encyclopedia, Ozar Yisrael. The Ozar was in part a traditionalist response to Otsar Hayahdut: Hoveret l’dugma, a sample volume of an encyclopedia created by Asher Ginzberg (Ahad Ha’am)’s circle of cultural nationalists. However, Eisenstein was keen for his encyclopedia to have a veneer of objective and academic respectability. To achieve this, he assembled a global cohort of contributors who transcended religious and ideological boundaries, even as he retained firm editorial control. Through the story of the Ozar Yisrael, this dissertation highlights the role of America as an exporter of Jewish culture, raises questions about the borders between Haskalah and cultural nationalism, and reveals variety among Orthodox thinkers active in Jewish culture in America at the turn of the twentieth century. Whereas the topic was practically non-existent two decades ago, at the last World Congress of Jewish Studies, the “Olympics” of Jewish scholarship, held in Jerusalem in August 2013, various panels were dedicated to this burgeoning field. Although the Jewish people are usually dubbed “the people of the book,” in traditional Jewish society authority is primarily based on oral transmission in the teacher-student dialog.1 Thus, the innovation and modernization process connected to print and subsequent changes in reading culture had for a long time been underrated.2 Just as in Christian society, the establishment of printing houses and the dissemination of books instigated far-reaching changes in all areas of Jewish intellectual life and finally led to the democratization of Jewish culture.3 In central Europe, the rise of publications in the Jewish vernacular, i.e.
