Still they face formidable obstacles to their potential role as a major economic and social force in the development of the agricultural sector. Among the problems that constrain the development of women’s potential are heavy workloads, lack of access to factors of production (land, credit, water, technology), lack of training opportunities and access to advisory services. There are additional FRQVWUDLQWVVXFKDVSRRUDQGLQHIÀFLHQWVWRUDJHODFNRIFROG chain, weak transport and marketing mechanisms, which further affects their income. Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan Federal Minister of National Policy makers are aware that there is a need to improve role of Food Security and Research, women in Pakistan’s economic and agriculture development but Government of Pakistan still much needs to be done. Contribution of women to agricultural development should be PD[LPLVHGE\LPSOHPHQWLQJVROXWLRQVWRWKHVSHFLÀFVRFLDO economic, legal, and cultural problems they encounter. Attention should be paid to strengthen the economic dimension of women’s work in rural areas, to entrepreneurial factors and to those sectors that are directly related to rural women farmers. This report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations highlights overall status, challenges and contribution of women in sub sectors of agriculture and gives a road map for further improving these across the four provinces and three regions of Pakistan. The report’s recommendations focus on the means of enhancing economic impact of women’s work in agriculture, the value of promoting socio-cultural factors such as education, literacy, and nutrition, the need to enhance their legal status, and policy and institutional strategies that will promote income-generating activities for rural women farmers. In line with the federal government’s policy, the Ministry of National Food Security and Research will continue to support agriculture development in Pakistan directly and in partnership with the development partners, mainstreaming women, in order to better recognise and promote the economic role of rural women in agriculture. vi Foreword Ensuring global food security is the priority of FAO. As per the FAO 2013 report on Food Insecurity in the World, around 842 million people, or around one in eight people in the world, were suffering from chronic hunger, and were not getting enough food to conduct an active life. Among the different dimensions of food security, poverty plays an important role in decreasing the access to food in economic terms. Country-level results suggest that poor dietary quality is often associated with poor utilization outcomes, in particular with high stunting rates, i.e., 43 percent in Pakistan. It has been noted that balanced diets are not available to the poorer segments of the population, which rely heavily on a few carbohydrate-rich staples. Therefore strong efforts are needed in the agriculture sector to improve household food security and access to more diverse and Patrick T. Evans nutritious food. This report highlights the fact that the agriculture sector is underperforming in Pakistan and one of the key reasons is that women do not have equal access to resources and opportunities they need. It also decreases the yield of many important Brassica species by disturbing their normal growth and development. In this review, we have highlighted the latest reports about the impact of different abiotic stresses on different growth stages and other morpho-physiological processes of important Brassica species such as canola/rapeseed (Brassica napus), indian mustard (Brassica juncea), Brassica oleracea and Brassica rapa. Several researchers reported that abiotic stresses affect the important morpho-biochemical processes such as shoot and root length, shoot fresh and dry weight, proline and relative water contents, chlorophyll amount, antioxidant enzymes activity of important Brassica species. These stresses also disturb normal oxidative processes that lead to cell injury. The genetic modification approaches for the development of transgenic plants against these environmental extremes have been described. The present study will be useful to identify the best abiotic stress tolerant Brassica genotypes for further genetic engineering program and crop improvement programs.

This investigation includes landing as well as trade figures in terms of imports and exports. Since the independence, Pakistan’s economy has gone through many fluctuations due to indigenous and exotic shocks. These perturbations include the separation of East Pakistan in 1971, exponential population growth, nuclear testing in 1998 and political instability. In addition to these factors, fisheries sector also faced several distresses of its own such as onset of small-scale artisanal fisheries, lack of technologies, meager institutional development and lack of awareness among fishing communities. These factors have led to the collapse of fisheries sector. Consequently, overall fisheries in general and molluscan fisheries sector particularly experienced tremendous changes. It is noteworthy that the trade in terms of exports of fish and molluscs (including their products) were recorded maximum in 2013 (238,757 t) and 1999 (9,440 t), respectively. Overall fish landings steadily increased from 21,540 t (1950) to a peak of 612,444 t (1999) and declined afterward.

  • Acid Violence in Pakistan
    Taiba Zia Acid Violence in Pakistan 47% of Pakistan’s nearly 190 million population are women.1 The country ratified CEDAW in 1996.2 More than 15 years have passed since then but Pakistan still has a dismal women’s rights record, ranking 134 out of 135 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Report of 20123. By far the most egregious of these are crimes of violence against women, which range from “honor” killings4 and rapes to domestic violence and acid crimes. The Aurat Foundation, a local women’s rights organization, reports 8539 cases of violence against women in 2011, an alarming increase of 6.49% from the previous year. Of these, sexual assault increased by 48.65%, acid throwing by 37.5%, “honor” killings by 26.57% and domestic violence by 25.51%. The organization noted 44 cases of acid violence in 2011 compared to 32 in 2010. An important point to remember here is that these are only the cases reported in the media.5 Indeed, it is widely acknowledged that most cases do not make it to the media as women tend not to come forth with the crimes for a number of reasons, such as fear, stigma, lack of rights awareness, economic dependence on the perpetrators, lack of family and societal support, and mistrust of the police and judiciary, to name a few. Collecting data from isolated rural areas is also difficult. Valerie Khan, Chair of Acid Trust Foundation Pakistan, estimates acid attacks in Pakistan number 150 each year while Shahnaz Bokhari, chief coordinator at the Progressive Women’s Association, states that her organization has documented over 8800 cases of victims burnt by acid and fire since 1994.6 Bokhari adds the caveat that her figures are only from “Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and a 200-mile radius” and not the entire country.
