Zum Gemeindegebiet gehören auch große Teile des bekannten Wander- und Schigebietes Schlick. Telfes besteht aus den Ortsteilen Telfes, Gagers, Plöven, Kapfers und Luimes. Die Telfer Pfarre kann bis ins 10. Jahrhundert zurückdatiert werden, wobei das gesamte Stubaital eine einzige Pfarrgemeinde bildete. Im neunzehnten Jahrhundert begann langsam der Fremdenverkehr ins Stubaital einzuziehen, was durch die 1904 eröffnete Stubaitalbahn noch weiter gefördert wurde. Zugleich mit der Anschließung an die Bahn, kam auch die Elektrifizierung nach Telfes.
