ABSTRACT

Lina Nailatul Muyassaroh, Airport Information Kiosk Development at International Airport Soekarno-Hatta Tangerang Banten. Supervised by DR.Eko Syamsuddin H, M.Eng and Taufik Edy S. MScTech.

Soekarno-Hatta International airport is the biggest and busiest airport in Jakarta. In 2009, Soekarno-Hatta was ranked 22nd amongst the worlds busiest airport by it. Accordingly many new tourists who come from various countries visit Jakarta needs some information related to Jakarta. To resolve those issue a solution offered is “Developing Airport Information Kiosk Application” in order to provide the information needed by tourist. Interview and questionnaire were done in the early stage of developing this application and its components. It is required to gather information about airport and understanding the importance of this application. The Interactive Multimedia System Design and Development (IMSDD) methodology development used in building this application. This application consist of six main features: News, Airport facilities, Mall information, Hotel, Recreation and Jakarta Food. Based on the result of the evaluation by questionnaires, it can be concluded that this application has sufficient information, the design interface is interesting, easy to understand and it can help the tourist in getting the information needed in the airport.

INTRODUCTION

1 Background

Human direct conversation is a complex phenomenon involving

understanding, cultures, and educational backgrounds. Conversation factors such

as speech, intonation, gesture, and head movements are not just done in parallel,

but also interdependently. Furthermore, higher tone or lower tone, pointing

towards oneself or pointing towards the other may result in different

interpretations.

For example when someone ask direction to a public service officer who came from different culture or background, there could be some misinterpretation happened about the information transferred. Sometimes airport officer have to pull out a map to show tourist that has just landed a direction to a certain place.

Meanwhile other passengers have been waiting for minutes to just want to ask how to get a taxi. This situation caused inconveniences and such problem often out of awareness and this problem could influence level of customer satisfaction.

In the world of information technology the kind of problems mentioned above have been addressed by developing an application which is called Information Kiosk . This thesis objective is to create Information Kiosk system application for foreigner that arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

1.2 Problem Specifications

The scopes of problems that will be explained in this thesis are:

1. Gathering information of public facilities in airport such as

restaurants, taxi service, bus stop, money changer, toilet and ATM

centers.

2. Designing multimedia application which will show the information

about nearby hotels, shopping mall, recreation areas, and some

favorit traditional foods in Jakarta for foreign visitors.

3. This application also provides updated information of local news

and some outgoing events, so foreign visitors able to go to different

places according to their preferences. The process of updating the

information is done through database management application.

4. Providing a tool for the administrator to update content in the

application.

2 Problem Limitations

In this thesis, there are some limitations in developing the application,

there area:

1. This application does not show the flight schedules.

2. This application only shows the route to several places (hotels,

shopping malls, and recreation areas) in Jakarta. 3. The development of application in this thesis use IMSDD

(Interactive Multimedia System Design and Development)

approach.

4. This application is designed specifically for foreigner that arrived

at the Soekarno-Hatta international airport Jakarta.

1.4 Objective and Advantage

1. For the company (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport

Management) this application could improve customer services

quality.

2. Enhance government tourism programs.

3. Implementing the multimedia application at Soekarno-Hatta

International Airport.

4. Adding new knowledge and broaden student understanding in the

knowledge area which have been studied in the university.

5. Completing the pre requisite for graduating as a bachelor degree in

UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta.

1.5 Time and Place

This thesis starts on August 2010 until January 2011 at Soekarno-Hatta

International Airport, Cengkareng-Tangerang Banten.

1.6 Research Methodology

Gathering data is needed in developing the application to support the arguments and explanations. The methodology research for gathering data that were used: Field Study

Interview; To support the developing system, interviewing

employees of the company was done to get an accurate and up to

date data.

Questioner; questioners were distributed among foreigners in

Jakarta to assess the application and react to the inputs given.

7 System Methodology Development

The methodology that was used in designing kiosk information application multimedia is based on Interactive Multimedia System Design and Development

(IMSDD). This methodology consists of:

a. System Requirement

In this phase, hardware and software system requirement

also user profile are explained.

b. Design Consideration

The next phase is to design the data structure, software

architecture, interface representation, and procedure details.

c. Implementation

In this section Black-box testing was used to evaluate

features in the application.

d. Evaluation

The final phase is to evaluate the program which has been

developed.

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (Indonesian: Bandar Udara

Internasional Soekarno–Hatta) is the main airport serving the greater Jakarta area on the island of Java, (Figure 2.1). The airport is named after the first

President of Indonesia, Soekarno, and the first vice-president, Mohammad Hatta.

The airport is often called Cengkareng by Indonesians. The airport's (International

Air Transportation Association) IATA code, CGK, originates from the name of the Cengkareng locality, a district situated to the northwest of the city.

Figure 2.1 Soekarno-Hatta International Airport1

7 8

Located about 20 km west of Jakarta, in Tangerang, Banten, Soekarno–

Hatta airport began to operate in 1985, replacing the former Airport

(domestic flights) in , and Halim Perdanakusuma International

Airport in East Jakarta. Kemayoran Airport has since closed. Halim

Perdanakusuma is still operating, serving mostly charters and military flights.

The land area of the airport is 18 km². It has two independent parallel runways separated 2,400 m connected by two cross taxiways. There are three main terminal buildings: Terminal 1 (domestic flights only). Terminal 2

(international flights and Garuda Airlines domestic flights). Terminal 3, Pier 1

(domestic flights only).

The airport was designed by Paul Andreu, a French architect who also designed Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. One of the major characteristics of

Soekarno–Hatta airport is the incorporation of the local vernacular architecture into the design, and the presence of tropical gardens in between the waiting lounges. However, Soekarno–Hatta International Airport was noted for its beautiful landscaping: the airport was awarded the 1995 Aga Khan Award for

Architecture.

As an international airport Soekarno–Hatta has to provide a large number of facilities therefore Soekarno-Hatta has 150 check-in counters, 30 baggage carousels and 42 gates. Each sub-terminal has 25 check-in counters, 5 baggage carrousels and 7 gates in order to serve the passenger.

In May 2008, ForbesTraveller.com recognized Soekarno–Hatta

International Airport as the 6th most punctual airport in the world with 86.3% of 9

its flights departing on time, while 72.3% arriving on time. In December 2009,

ForbesTraveller.com recognized Soekarno–Hatta International Airport as the 2nd most punctual airport in the world with 89.2% of its flights departing on time, while 84.2% arriving on time.

Soekarno–Hatta International Airport was the 35th busiest airport in 2004-

2006, according to Airliners World magazine. Soekarno–Hatta International

Airport is currently (2009) the 22nd busiest airport in the world in terms of passenger traffic. Soekarno–Hatta International Airport is the busiest airport in

Indonesia, followed by Juanda International Airport (Surabaya) and Ngurah Rai

International Airport (Denpasar).

Terminal 2 has 3 sub-terminals. Each sub-terminal has 25 check-in counters, 5 baggage carousels and 7 gates. It has the capacity of handling 9 million passengers per annum. The gates in Terminal 2 has alphabet prefix of D, E and F. The gates are D1-D7, E1-E7 and F1-F7 and it has 75 international flights per day. There are at least 47 airlines that flight to Jakarta (see Table 2.1) where the passenger comes from different countries. Several countries that is not from

Asian countries they are a VOA passenger who has to have a visa to stay in

Indonesia. 10

2.2 Information Kiosk

A Kiosk is a computer based terminal or display that is used to provide information or services, typically in a public places. Kiosk systems are being used in a variety of applications, including information directories, customer self-service terminals, electronic catalogs, internet access terminals, and tourism guides. An interactive kiosk comes in many shapes and sizes, and is often custom built for a specific application.

The Example of Information kiosk is show in Figure 2.2, an Information

Kiosk bellow allows visitors to find out about the events, tickets, and sponsors of the Gerald R. Ford Vilar Pavilion Amphitheater in Vail, Colorado. This application provide self-service to the costumer in getting information (Rocky,

1994).

Figure 2.2 Example of Information Kiosk 14

2.3 Database Management System in Information Kiosk

Connoly and Beg (2005) stated that “Database is shared collection of logically related data and a description of this data, designed to meet the information needs of an organization”. While Connoly and Beg (2005) explained the Database Management System (DBMS) is a software system that enables users to define, create, maintain, and control access to the database.

The DBMS is used in airport information kiosk to give the system administrator a convenience way to define the database, usually trough a Data

Definition Language (DDL), also insert, update, delete and retrieve data from the database. The structure of DBMS and the information kiosk can be seen in

Figure 2.3.

Database DBMS Information Kiosk User

Figure 2.3 Structures illustrations of DBMS

2.3.1 MySQL

Ellie (2007) describe that MySQL is a kind of relational database

management system. The data is stored in an organized and structured way

for easy access and processing. That was handled by a database

management system such as MySQL. Data in MySQL is stored in tables

rather than in a flat file database. A flat file database is a database that 15

stores data in a plain text file. Each line of the text file holds one record, with fields separated by delimiters, such as commas or tabs. While it uses a simple structure, a flat file database cannot contain multiple tables like a relational database can.

Information kiosk airport application uses MySQL as a Database

Server because MySQL is considered fast, reliable, and easy to use.

MySQL server was originally developed to handle large databases much faster than existing previous solutions and has been successfully used in highly demanding production environments for several years (Ellie, 2007).

2.3.2 PHP

Ellie (2007) explain that PHP is simple, fast, portable scripting language well suited for development of databases-enabled web sites. PHP was developed in 1995 and it is currently powering millions of web sites worldwide. By May 2000, PHP 4 was released. The core of PHP 4 was entirely rewritten to improve the performance of complex web applications and improve modularity of the platform. Zeev Suraski and

Andi Gutmans, the author of PHP 3 introduced the new parsing engine, called Zend engine. Zend engine is the scripting language that powers PHP today at 2010.

The latest improvement of PHP was released in July 2004, PHP 5 added a whole new object oriented model to language. The new model is based on Zend engine 2 and greatly improves PHP performance and capabilities (Ellie, 2007). 16

PHP is used in airport information kiosk application to connect

flash application to the database. There are some queries that used to

connect flash to the database. This connection (Flash to MySQL) can only

be done via PHP.

2.4 Animation

Nigel Chapman and Jenny Chapman (2004) explained that animation can be defined as moving pictures. Throughout the twentieth century, animation was used for entertainment, advertising instruction, art and propaganda on film and latterly on video; it is now also widely employed on the World Wide Web and in multimedia presentations.

Lasseter (1987) describe the principles of traditional animation that primarily used by animator at Disney studio, there are:

1. Squash and Stretch

2. Timing

3. Anticipation

4. Staging

5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action

6. Straight Ahead Action and Pose-To-Pose Action

7. Slow In and Out

8. Arcs 17

9. Exaggeration

10. Secondary Action

The information kiosk application used flash as a tool for developing this application. Explained by Nigel Chapman and Jenny Chapman (2004), flash is more than an animation program. It supports a powerful scripting language, called action script, which make it possible to add interactivity to animation and to build web application with user interfaces created in flash.

An animation being created in flash is organized using timeline, a graphical representation of a sequence of frames, similar to the timeline in video editing application. Moving a single symbol about the stage in a straight line offers little in the way of gratification. Tweening can be applied to different layers, with key frames in different places. Tweening is shown on the timeline as an arrow between two key frames.

2.5 Flowchart

A flowchart is a diagram that uses graphic symbols to depict the nature and flow the steps in a process. Flowcharts are used in analyzing, designing, documenting or managing a process or program in various fields. Flowchart used by Information kiosk application to flow every steps and identify the activities in a process. There are several flowchart symbols (Table 2.2) used by application. 18

Table 2.2 Flowchart Symbols

Symbol Explanation Flow Symbol use to state the process

Communication Link Symbol used to state the data or information transition from one location to the other.

Connector Symbol use to declare the connection of process in the same page.

Storage Data Symbol indicates the database storage.

2.6 State Transition Diagram

Whitten (2004) describe that, State Transition Diagram is a tool used

to represents the sequence of screen variation that can occur during one

session process. State diagram provide a various symbol and ideas for

modeling (Table 2.3). State transition diagram in Information kiosk

application is used to show some possible state of an object, detection and

response event.

2.7 Structure and Navigation

Nigel Chapman and Jenny Chapman (2004), state that hypermedia

consist of a collection of nodes connected by links. The general form of 20

this model allows nodes to be combined in completely arbitrary ways: any node can be linked to any other nodes, as the consequences there can be any number of ways to reach any particular node. Well designed application will have a clear structure and provide a means of navigation that expresses that structure.

In the information kiosk application a user can navigate to several pages sequentially. However, there are pages which can be accessed from several pages then the structure of the information kiosk is a type of

Hybrid structure. Hybrid structure is a navigation linked sites that can be seen as being composed of sub-sites. Figure 2.4 illustrate the idea of a

Hybrid structure.

2.8 Storyboard.

Storyboard has an important role in the development of multimedia

applications. Storyboard is used as a tool in multimedia application design

stage. Storyboarding process that is known today was developed by Walt

Disney studio in early 1930.

In any time-based production involving visual material, a series of

small drawings representing key moments, actions and development in the

production, presented in sequence similar to a comic-strip. A story board

may include notes describing action and sound.

2.9 Interactive Multimedia

Mark Elsom (2001) explains that a simple division of three types

of activity that human being can engage are thought, action, and

interaction. Thought is some sort of internal process of a mental nature

which has an outcome of changing mental state. Action activity effect the

changing of an object because of the action. The last activity that human

being can engage is interaction; an activity toward the other participant by

responding from both activities.

In interactive multimedia there are some particular interactions.

Physical interaction corresponds to things which achieve related changes

in physical part, for example there are two men hitting each other because

one of them start hitting the other men. Communicative interaction

concern things which could achieve changes in the mental part, for

example someone tell his friend about his problem then his friend give an

advice to make him calm.

An information kiosk application use human-computer interaction

(HCI) which is interacting user to discover by providing some tools that

allow user to interact with information kiosk application. The background

sound provide in order to make the user more relax when they use this

application and the animation will also inserted to make the interface more

interest. ( Word to PDF - Unregistered )

METHODOLOGY

3.1 Design and Development Cycle

This application use Interactive Multimedia System Design and

Development (IMSDD) for the methodology. Explained by (Dastbaz, 2003) The stage of the IMS design and development cycle could be defined as System

Requirement, Design Consideration, Implementation and Evaluation. Figure 3.1 show the diagram of Interactive multimedia system design and development.

Hardware and System Word to PDF - Software Definition UnRegistered

Delivery Design Considerations System Metaphor Requirements Information Types

Evaluation Design Navigational Considerations Structure Media Preparation and Implementation Integration Issues

Beta testing Prototyping Figure 3.1 Interactive Multimedia System Design and Development Cycle

3.2 System Requirements

This stage is comparable to the ‘requirement specification’ in the

‘waterfall model’ and contains elements of ‘feasibility’ and ‘hardware selection’ presented in the RMM model. At this stage a general definition of the IMS and its environment as well as tools used for its development are determined.

Developing Information Kiosk application for foreigner that arrived at

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, clearly visible that target of this application are tourists, who want to visit or have any necessity in Jakarta. This application will be placed in the airport and it is determined that this multimedia package should be PC based and if it is possible use a touch screen monitor. The maximum monitor resolution for Information kiosk application is 1280 x 1024 pixels.

The Information kiosk application use multimedia software to help the developer to easily develop the application. Flash multimedia software was used to design the interfaces, insert the soundtrack, text, and images. In addition to develop this application MySQL is required as a database engine and PHP queries used to connect the Flash into databases.

Hardware and Software requirement for developing this application can be seen in Table 3.1. Table 3.1 Hardware and Software Requirement.

M a c r o m e d i a · Intel® Pentium® 4, Intel Centrino®, Intel Xeon®, or Dreamweaver CS3 Intel Core™ Duo (or compatible) processor

· Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista™ Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise (certified for 32-bit editions)

· 512MB of RAM

· 1GB of available hard-disk space (additional free space required during installation)

· 1,024x768 monitor resolution with 16-bit video card.

· DVD-ROM drive

Macromedia Flash · Flash CS3 runs on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and all versions of Vista and Window 7 (only 32 bit versions are CS3 eligible for tech support).

· Windows based systems should have either an Intel Pentium 4, Intel Centrino, Intel Xeon or Intel Core Duo or newer processors.

· 1 GB of RAM is recommended.

· Flash CS3 requires 2.5 GB of hard disk. · 16 pixel depth with a resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels.

Adobe Photoshop · 20 MB of RAM · 65 MB of video RAM CS3 · 650 MB space on hard drive.

3.3 Design Consideration

The purpose of this stage is to draw up clear guidelines about the design details. In this respect this stage could be compared to the ‘architectural design’ and ‘detail design’ stage of the ‘waterfall’ model and/or the ‘design’ stage of user interface design cycle proposed by Preece (1993).

Shneiderman (1998) discuss the theories about the rules of the interfaces design. The following sets of guidelines were proposed for developing the user interface in an Interactive Multimedia System, there are:

1. Use appropriate metaphor: A good metaphor creates an

easy environment that the user could easily recognize.

2. Simplicity and ease of use is king: A good interface is

the one that enable the user to almost immediately start

carrying out simple tasks without they need to go through

a chunky manual.

3. Consistency in design is crucial: Consistent use of icons

and navigational features helps reduce the complexity of

an interface within interactive multimedia system.

4. The necessity for informative help and feed back:

provides help tips and feedback to users, in the form of

rollover pop-ups and content sensitive help provides

novice users with reliable mechanism to explore the

system and quickly master the ins and outs and key

features of the system. 5. Provide mechanism for reversal of action: A key

functionality that needs by the designer is to built-in the

control features that allow user to correct their mistake

easily and reverse a process they have started

inadvertently.

The Information kiosk application is a presentation tool, so a user required, as an interactive application the user can stop the self-running mode and interact with the system. The application provides detail information such as hotel information, mall, recreation places and maps. This application also shows the image of the information provided.

This application requires additional enhancement again extensive media preparation such as the navigational structure of the system. Many layers in this application will be filled up in accordance with the information to be needed. On the layer system, it follows a set navigational path going through various screens.

On the other layer user can stop this process and explore the information manually.

3.4 Implementation

Once the design features were defined, the implementation phases of the system begin using multimedia-authoring tools. The implementation stage consists of:

a. Creating a prototype of the system and b. Beta test the prototype for possible design and control problems.

This stage is comparable to the coding, integration and unit testing stages in the ‘waterfall’ model; or the implementation stage in the user interface design cycle, the implementation stage in the Object Oriented Hypermedia Design Model

(OOHDM) design model and the construction stage in the Relational

Management Model (RMM) design model.

Based on the decision made during system requirement and design stages a prototype version of the multimedia kiosk is developed. The prototype will be tested using black-box testing method to make sure there are no practical errors.

Information kiosk application will be tested in order to determine the functional requirement. Black box testing method (Figure 3.2) will be used to test the incorrect or missing functionality, interface errors, checking errors in data structures used by interfaces, behavior or performance errors, and initialization and termination errors.

According to Beizer (1995) Black box testing (also called functional testing) is testing that ignores the internal mechanism of a system or component and focuses solely on the outputs generated in response to selected inputs and execution conditions.

INPUT Executable Program OUTPUT Figure 3.2 Example of Black Box Testing

3.5 Evaluation

At this stage the system is evaluated against its stated goals. Different types of evaluation approaches including formative or summative used. Lawton

(1980) describes the following five forms or models of evaluation:

1. The classical experimental model: it is assumed that control over all

relevant experimental variables is both desirable and possible.

2. The research and development model: it requires a clear indication

of objectives that are to be measured and appropriate pre and post

tests.

3. The illuminative model: Parlett and Hamilton (1972) coined the term

‘illuminative model’ to describe a qualitative approach that is based

around observation and interviews.

4. The briefing decision-making model: in this model political

considerations on whether something is politically correct are taken

into account and given more weight that adherence to pure

methodology. 5. The case study model: this model is used mainly in summative and

formative evaluation and is considered as appropriate in examining the

effects of situational and personal factors. Kirakowski and Corbett

(1990) stated that the evaluation of human-computer interfaces must

be abided by more general methods applied to all forms of evaluation.

The formative evaluation observation method is used to observe how the users use the Airport Information Kiosk. The summative evaluation used to see how the users take advantages of the application. Based on data gathered, further modifications were made before the final production. ( Word to PDF - Unregistered )

DEVELOPMENT

1 Application Development

Information kiosk application was made to get as a facility to the arriving passengers at International Airport Seokarno-Hatta. This application will help them finding the information that is probably needed. This application designed to reduce some misinterpretation information delivered.

Several techniques used in developing this application such as the storyboard for each page, structure navigation, flowchart and state transition diagram. The storyboard layout, stucutre navigation, flowchart and state transition diagram will be explain in detail in the next sub chapters.

1 Storyboard

In developing multimedia application the storyboard has to be drawn in order to sketch the design interface for every pages. There are several layout designed for Airport Information kiosk application that consist of several pages: a. Introduction storyboard. (Figure 4.1)

SUMMARY AND FUTURE WORK

1 Summary

Airport Information Kiosk application is the application that provide some information that is needed by tourists. This application use Interactive Multimedia

System Design and Development (IMSDD) as a methodology development that consist of four stages, there are System Requirements, Design Consideration,

Implementation, and Testing.

Airport Information Kiosk application for Soekarno-Hatta International

Airport provide some information about hotels, shopping malls, recreation places, and give information about the traditional food in Jakarta. Display of the airport map and its facilities are also included. The application also provides feature to update news information that can be updated and edited by the administrator using the administrator page.

According to the result of questionnaires taken, some of the tourists said that this application has a good interface design, user friendly, and can help the tourist in getting the information needed. This application is also considered good in delivering information and good using animation utilization. 2 Future Work.

For the future research it is expected that it will be build in multi languages such as Mandarin and Arabic language because most of the tourist comes from

Arabian and Asian countries not only from English country. The voice feature might be included in order to make this application more communicative. The application will be more informative if the real-time traffic and weather news also included. It has to be an online application and linked into website that provide infomation such as http://bmg.co.id for weather information, and http://tmcmetro.com for traffic information.
